According to sources with knowledge of the situation, [Drew Gooden] has had recent discussions with the Kings regarding a possible buyout of the remaining portion of his expiring contract ($7.1 million this season).

While it does not appear likely, Gooden's window of opportunity to join a potential playoff team closes at 9 p.m. Pacific time tonight. That is the deadline for players to join teams and still be eligible to be on the playoff roster.

Does Gooden jump ship?

by melee on Mar 1, 2009 8:54 AM PST reply actions

Makes no sense to me

I guess the Kings could save 1.4 million if Gooden forgoes the rest of his salary, but he could still have some value as a tradeable chip in the off season to teams that are over cap. It’s not my 1.4 but I think the latter is of more value than the former.

by ElRonToro on Mar 1, 2009 9:17 AM PST reply actions

Gooden's a free agent at the end of the season

And I don’t see him commanding the type of contract that would call for a sign and trade scenario.

He’s not the future, so if letting him go means saving a few bucks and we get to see the other guys more as a result, why not?

Yeah I'm with ya on that

Why waste time? Gooden can’t want to be here. He gets nothing out of being here really. The Kings are better off not having Gooden long term anyway.

I personally hope they waive him so he can just get out of here.

Gooden needs a team that will give him PT,

he’s in a contract year, and needs to play to show he’s still worth a contract next year. Plus he’s injured, so no one else is going to offer him a contract before Monday. And, without a chance to get another contract somewhere else, why would he give up money,

He’s valuable to the Kings, if only to keep Natt from going small ball every game. Yes, he might take a few minutes from JT & Hawes, but they might get more time together if Gooden can just give them rest time, and not start for them. I’d rather see JT & Hawes playing in their natural position, then along with guys playing out of position in (natt’s small ball).

Natt is the problem not Gooden. Besides, with his injury he’ll probably only play every third game until the end of the season.

This is not about Gooden

It’s about saving as much $$$ as possible. Financially, the Kings are going down like the Titanic. Gooden won’t help sell tickets or the Kings this season. This season’s a wreck, so the Maloofs are cutting losses and saving as much $$$ as possible for next season.

by CloudyEyes on Mar 1, 2009 4:46 PM PST up reply actions

It's about why Gooden would be willing to take a cut in Pay $$$.

and he won’t, which I covered in the 1st paragraph.

Excuse me for clouding the arguement, by suggesting if he doesn’t agree to a buyou, that it might not be bad for the Kings.

Players have been known to take less money to play for a contender.

Most recently, Marbury. (though I still can’t understand why Boston would take the risk)

by NoceOne on Mar 1, 2009 6:06 PM PST up reply actions

Boston takes the risk because if it doesn't work out

they just bench him. They were already Championship contenders without him.

If he plays like they want him to, they’ll be even better.

by Aykis16 on Mar 1, 2009 6:17 PM PST up reply actions

I may have to eat my words

but I think I’ll wait until I see him sign another contract this year. I can’t see his agent allowing him to do this, unless they had someone showing interest. But, he only had $2M left on this years contract, so if he walked away from that much money, he better get resigned or he’s an idiot. If he does resign then I guess I’m the idiot. But, I’m sure alot of you already knew that.

Once he clears waivers

He’ll get re-signed. Dallas and San Antonio both want him. (He’d fit better in San Antone though in my opinion.)

Rec'd. I'm all for more victories but I don't think Gooden's

going to be that much of a difference. Much better to go with the guys we know are going to be here next year (Hawes, Shock, Greene and Nocioni)

I can't believe

that Utah would just waive Boozer, when they could have at least received something for him at the trade deadline. But stranger things have happened.

Not so sure about that

The salary cap is going down, so the Max contract limit is too. And, with only about 2 teams having enough cap space to sign him, it’s going to be a buyers market. Plus with another injury on his resume, he doesn’t look as good as he once did.

If he opts out, and Utah can’t do a sign & trade, he might not get a offer as high as the contract he already has. 2010 should have more buyers, and offer a better time to negotiate.

2010 he wouldn't be the marquee player

If he opts out now he’s going to be the best player available. But I see your point. And a lot of teams will have money to give too.

by Aykis16 on Mar 1, 2009 2:14 PM PST up reply actions

If I was Boozer I'm waiting until '10.

No way he’s getting the money he probably thinks he deserves this summer with the situation as it is. By waiting until next summer he may not be the top of the class (Bron, Wade, and Bosh are) but he will still be on the second tier. Once those big free agents are gone, all the other teams who have been saving and missed out on them will be willing to throw money at players like Boozer.

by eduardo_m7 on Mar 1, 2009 2:53 PM PST up reply actions

Plus...

some of the teams looking to sign/keep a first-tier guy are trying to get far enough under the cap that they can land two marquee free-agents. It just seems like he would have a much better shot at a big contract in 2010.

by cabz on Mar 1, 2009 3:54 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed, Plus

if the cap continues to decline, a lot of those big names (Bron, Wade, and Bosh) might have to take the 10% minimum pay raise to go to another team. The cap is rumored to be $57.3M next yr and possibly $54-55M in 2010. With a cap of $55M the max, which is a percentage of the cap (between 25-35% of salary cap based on years of service) Boozer could receive would be $16.5M or $5M more then he’ll make this year. If he opts out this year, the max based on a $57.3M cap next yr is $17.2M . But, considering the economy, it’s unlikely that he’ll get a max offer anyways, so he won’t be gambling much if he waits.

Gooden

He’d be a good piece if we were a bubble team that needed a solid rotation player. We’re not, and all he’s going to do is tease us while taking time away from our young bigs.

I’d rather resign Simmons for $1 mil-$1.5 mil and have him play 10-15 minutes agame next year while Spencer and JT continue to develop than hang onto Gooden.

Not sure I agree

playing and locking in bad habits might not be helpful. Gooden has a lot of polish – and I think its different coming from a coach, there’s not that competetive urge to get better, to Beat that guy.

I’m not sure either way though, it depends on the player I suppose. Just throwing it out there.

for no other reason than Gooden’s Kings jersey joining the Rasheed Wallace Hawks jersey hall of fame of stupid jersey buys. I’ve got my Nelson “haha!” ready to any unsuspecting Gooden Kings jersey wearer.

No lol

I don’t think Gooden was waived, so it’s all a moot point. Which means my personal hell, with work on an additional 4th ring tha is currently under construction, is complete.
