The Kings should save a small amount of scratch. I wonder if the Team Store will allow me to return my lightly worn Kings #90.

Petrie gets it

Good player, bad timing. We need young players and roster filler until we get better and have a wad of cash.

Probably around 2 mill

I could see Gooden taking 5 mill and being happy. Decent investment for the Kings. We save money on Drew and we don’t have to worry about Geoff giving him an MLE in the offseason! Oh wait, he’s a free agent anyway…

Actually...

Players & Teams can “negotiate” a buyout amount less than what is actually owed. The problem is that NBA contracts are guaranteed, so players usually have little reason to take much of a discount, because they really don’t have to.

In a case like this, he could give up a couple mil, and get a shot at showcasing himself in the playoffs* . . . which could in turn make him more money on his next contract. It’s a win-win.

*As long as he got picked up before the Playoff Roster deadline.

by smgmatt on Mar 2, 2009 9:01 AM PST up reply actions

Which he will smg

He was waived by the deadline which means he has a chance to be eligible for the deadline to be on a playoff roster.

It's interesting

Because the article says that the Kings saved about $2 million. There’s about 1/4 of the season left and Gooden makes $7.1 million this year. If the article is correct, Gooden essentially waived the entire remainder of his salary for this season.

He’ll sign somewhere else for the NBA minimum and make a little bit of cash. Playing in the playoffs should benefit him in the long-term. It’s just interesting that he apparently waived all of his guaranteed money for the rest of the year.

I’m sure this makes the Kings happy, as this pays the $2 million Mikki Moore is guaranteed next season.

by Carl on Mar 1, 2009 10:49 PM PST reply actions

Mikki's 2009 salary

Can someone clear this up for me? I am assuming that since the Celtics signed MM, the 2 million we would have owed him for next year is null. Can a player be paid by two teams for the same season? Or was the 2 million the buyout cost?

Ask Dallas about that

They were paying Michael Finley about $15 million per while Finley was draining ’em for San Antonio – and yes, he had a separate contract with the Spurs for a few million more.

by section214 on Mar 1, 2009 11:06 PM PST up reply actions

For a contract to be transferred to the new team.

the player must be pick up in the 48hrs after he is put on waivers. Since the Celtics didn’t pick up MM until he had already cleared waivers, the Kings are still responseable the MM’s contract. They pay him for the remainder of this year, and the buyout for next yr. Then Moore is allowed to make another deal with the Celtics for the remainder of this year. He’s a double dipper.

"If you don't have anything good to say, LIE" - Mom

by HighTops on Mar 1, 2009 11:52 PM PST up reply actions

It's complicated...

Moore had a team option which I believe is handled differently than a standard contract buy-out. The Kings do get relief for part of his 2008-09 contract but it is very complicated.

The Michael Finley deal is different, there was a one time offer by the league to pay 1 single player, waive him and regain his salary spot. Several players – Finley, Allan Houston, Aaron McKie were part of this deal when the league and players signed the new CBA. Again, it was a one time offer a few years back and isn’t a possibility now.

I liked Gooden but I don’t want the Kings to win down the stretch because some dude is trying to pad his stats going into free-agency.

Well, for most of those 4 years

The team was trying to rebuild on the fly, with the remnant parts of the C-Webb contract still preventing wholesale rebuilding. The Maloofs have even admitted they waited too long. But I don’t get the complaining about what the team is doing now – they are clearing out bodies and salary to put themselves in position to rebuild around the young frontcourt and Kevin Martin.

Honestly, I’m getting tired of the idiotic “nobody wants to play here” meme that’s going around. If you have money to spend, someone will want to play here. If you trade for a topline guy, he may be disgruntled at first, but he won’t have a choice but to play here.

One or two bad years of attendance does not erase the fact that this team still has one of the best General Managers in the business, owners who want to win, and a passionate fanbase that will turn out if the product (and ecomony) improve a bit.

In regards to Drew Gooden, he doesn’t exactly fit the bill of a “topline guy” does he? An expiring guy who’s been on multiple teams in his young career isn’t exactly the big free agent signing we are all looking for.

Your not listening I am not saying hes “the” guy I am saying we cant get any guy. Baron Davis and Elton Brand had other motives besides just money to go where they did. Everyone keeps talking about the kings did this to save money the kings did that to save money. But save money for “what”. No one has an answer to that because there isnt one.

by xtremedyme on Mar 2, 2009 4:14 PM PST up reply actions

We can't get any guy?? How in the world can you predict that?

When was the last time the Kings had the kind of money necessary to acquire a top-level free agent?

One question – just to make this easy. Are you saying that the Kings could offer more money to a free agent, or to retain a upper echelon player they make a trade for – and that player wouldn’t stay because it’s the Kings?

You do realize that we still have a GM who has continued success in the league right? And that we will likely have a shot at an impact player in the draft? And that this franchise isn’t completely devoid of young talent? This season is an outlier for the Petrie era.

All things being equal (read: money) between two franchises – I would agree with your premise. If the Lakers or Knicks or Bulls are offering a similar contract – sure, we would probably lose out. But IMO 99% of professional athletes are always going to take the offer with the most money. I don’t care if it’s Sacramento, Atlanta, Utah or otherwise.

Regardless, I don’t think we are going to sign an impact free agent long term unless it’s a guy we trade for first.

Are you kidding? (I like Corliss and everything. I’m not dissing the guy. Just to be clear) Corliss was too short and didn’t rebound enough to “school” the NBA @ PF. Gooden grabbing a double double in one single game doesn’t prove a whole lot IMO.

Corliss

Hey warm and fuzzy, I didnt say he schooled the NBA, I said he owned the position. Definitely not pushed around-size or no size. I seem to recall a lot of notoreity coming Corliss’ way. Well maybe more with Detroit but he was dominant in the very same way we currently are not.

I agree to a point

it was interesting to see a truly competant PF out there for one game. He may only BE competant – but we hadn’t had that in a while.

Gooden and Brad

Very comparable to Brad Miller statistically. In fact, career wise Brad is better in terms of PER. They are both in the 15-16 range now.

We didn’t need Brad Miller, although he was better than our young bigs. And we didn’t need Drew Gooden for the same reasons.

Those kids are going to get better in the next couple of years, and Miller and Gooden are going to decline.

We need to build around young players, add cheap role players for now and create some cap space to sign someone much better than Gooden when we are ready to be relevant again.

Having the Drew Goodens of the world around just delays the process. If we keep throwing $6 million a year at every mediocre player who is a slight upgrade from what we have, we’re going to be stuck in a pit of mediocrity for a long, long time. Let it go.

Good points CC... rec'd

Summarizes my feelings perfectly. Let the kids grow and let’s stop delaying this rebuilding. We are finally doing it….

I followed you, until you mentioned that Gooden is ready to decline.

Isn’t he 27 or 28? What makes you think he’s on the decline at this point in his career?

27 or 28 is usually a player's peak

after the peak, is the decline.

For one

The injuries.

Gooden is a steady player. Unfortunately we’ve had a bunch of guys for the past few years that we’ve labeled things like efficient, decent, solid, etc. That’s great in your supporting cast, but we are starting those kind of guys. The downtrending talent level finally caught up with us.

You need role players, but you also need stars, and those have been in short supply here lately. MOr eof the same isn;t going to get it done. It’s time to go on a Drew Gooden diet.

Not only that

What incentive was their for Drew Gooden to stay here past the summer?

Didn't seem to bother him when he got drafted by Memphis

And traded to Orlando.
