Kevin Martin for Zero (Minutes in the Fourth), Rashad McCants for Three

Before we get too deep into this thing, the elephant in the room -- Kevin Martin's zero fourth quarter minutes -- needs to be addressed. The early Associated Press said the team indicated Martin had not been injured prior to the fourth. Kenny Natt indicated otherwise in his post-game comments.

"Kevin had been out and twisted his ankle early," Natt said. "He wanted to stay in since he was loose. Then when he sat out, I brought the other guys in, and he just got really stiff. So I decided to just keep him out."

Asked if he reconsidered the decision when the shots weren't falling, Natt said he had.

"I gave it thought to bring him back in, but he was just too stiff," Natt said.

Martin didn't talk to reporters, but did send a text message to Sam Amick:

"I would have loved to play in the fourth," he wrote. "I believe in coach (Natt). He made the right decision. That group was playing well, and they earned the right to finish out the game."

So who knows. Someone from the team told reporters Martin was not benched due to injury. Natt said the opposite. Martin avoided the initial media scrum and gave a vague quote that both indicated he wanted to play and that he's not upset with Natt. Take it however you want. Natt seems to be a stand-up guy, and wouldn't lie about something fairly obvious to save himself from a controversy. But again, who knows? (Ailene Voisin does not.)

Anyways ...

Final - 3.10.2009 1 2 3 4 Total
Oklahoma City Thunder 27 28 29 15 99
Sacramento Kings 26 29 21 22 98

Complete Coverage >

The fourth-quarter unit actually did play well ... on defense. Sort of. The Thunder killed themselves with turnovers (11 in 24 posessions, which is completely unbelievable) and poor shooting (6-for-18). One way to judge the efficacy of the Sacramento defense in creating those turnovers is to look at Sacramento's steals. (It's not perfect -- you can have unforced turnovers leading to steals and good defense leading instead to non-steal turnovers, including offensive fouls. But it's a decent indicator.) Those 11 OKC turnovers in the fourth produced three steals for Sacramento. Not a lot of fast-breaking there.

The Kings could have won a variety of ways -- this is the proverbial "right there on the table" sort of game. Andres Nocioni had as open a shot as he'll ever get to tie the game late. He grazed the rim. Spencer Hawes missed a baseline dunk on one of his precious few late-game possessions. Bobby Jackson had a huge three pop out. The turnovers killed. (The turnovers always kill.) The awful two-point shooting in the fourth (3-11) killed. The inability to get to the line hurt. Could Martin have fixed any of that without giving up an equal or greater amount on the other end? Who do you insert him for -- the point guard? Rashad McCants? Nocioni? Francisco Garcia? That's part of the problem, I imagine, supposing Martin wasn't too hurt, as Martin has indicated. Who would Natt take out in that situation? Everyone had contributed something important, except for Bobby Jackson. Can you afford to run out a big line-up with Garcia and a potentially gimpy Martin sharing point guard duties?

Notice I leave McCants out of that last sentence -- because he's not sharing point guard duties with anyone. I don't mean to be glib, and I hate harping on well-entrenched points, but McCants does not pass the ball. Martin averages almost twice as many assists as McCants per-minute, and Martin is well known to be a less-than-stellar passer. If McCants runs the offense for one play, I can almost guarantee it will end in a McCants shot. And hey, that's fine -- he is what he is. But it's virtually assured that he and Martin can never play together without a point guard also on the floor. If Martin and McCants make up your guard line-up, the other three dudes might as well set a pick and get back on defense. This is not meant to demean the offensive prowess of either -- it's just a fact of their existences. They will rarely earn assists. (Martin is, of course, getting better at this. He has a long way to go ... and I'm not sure I want him headed in that direction.)

We (?) need to keep this in mind come July, when McCants is eligible for a contract or a match of an offer sheet. He basically cannot play alongside your best player, unless you want to give up a ton of power at the small forward. (Martin at small forward on offense is fine. Defense? With your two-guard -- McCants -- giving up 4-5 inches already? Egads.) Considering your best player gives 38 minutes a night, you need to understand how much you'll be able to utilize the admittedly lovely talent of said incompatible role player.

I say all this as McCants shoots 58% as a King, and is the only King beside Martin to average more than 20 points per 36 minutes. He has a PER over 20 as a King. He has been an absolute monster, McTenacity in the flesh. McCants has been a hero, more so than Nocioni. Maybe this is too far toward theoryball, and maybe we need to see it in action more. But I just can't fathom a way in which you can play he and Martin together without giving up the bank on defense, except against specifically small line-ups. Can you?

Great breakdown, TZ

And an excellent point in regards to McCants and his potential long-term value to this team.

I didn’t have a chance to watch the game last night, but I saw the scroll on ESPN this morning. I liked Spencer’s line of 20/10/5.

I know you're probably right...

But dammit, watching McCants pretty much take Jeff Green completely out of the game in the second half last night was a blast. 18 for Green in the first half, 4 in the second, and he’s a handful, even when you aren’t giving up 6 inches.

There has to be a point guard who can operate with Martin & McCants on the floor, especially given the limited minutes you’d have both out there at the same time.

Rocks are free, and slingshots easily stolen.

The biggest problem is, who do you mark McCants and Martin on? One is a short 2 guard, one is a skinny two guard. Add a PG and you have no one to guard the opponents SF.

I think the bigget problem is roster balance

With McCants, it causes you problems you can’t ignore with terms of ball handling and ball movement. Martin, unless he becomes that stellar ball handler, is not that guy.

Question

what do you guys think are the chances McCants gets resigned?

They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works, every time.

Well if this is the same team that love’s to give mle type deal’s then there is a good possibility he gets resigned (grrr)…but looking at how we tried to rebuild and save money then hopefully he doesn’t get signed…McCants is a good player but i would rather give that playing time to donte and possibly the player we get with the rockets pick.

Couple things

First, I think Natt is wrong, not lying. You don’t go down the stretch of your game because his ankle is stiff. You ask him if he’s ready to go: And he says: Yes I can or No I can’t.

Then, whatever happens, you play him the last few mins and try to ride him to victory. That’s the bottom line. Natt fucked up, and there’s no other way to spin that This game depended on his ability to coach for the Kings to win, and he failed the team. Yes, it’s more subtle than that, but at the bottom line level of it all, it’s really not.

Now, I will totally grant that Natt had every reason to think the lineup he did have in there for most of the 4th was working. After about the 6 min mark, and I don’t care what the reason was with Kevin, it became apparent that team had finished it’s ability to work well as a cohesive unit on the floor. Natt tapped the bench well last night; he failed to integrate Martin back properly, stiff ankle or no, back into the lineup for the stretch drive.

The point about McCants and Martin being on the floor is another issue altogether, and that’s something I think the Kings will look at in the off-season. I think a huge part of keeping McCants is whether they are able to trade Beno or not. If they’re able to move Beno in a deal (Washington? In a move that saves the Bullets luxury tax next season, and for the KIngs to dump Beno’s salary long term on Washington, or something like that—is what I’m thinking—here’s what I’m noodling: Kenny Thomas & Beno Udrih for Darius Songalia, DeShawn Stevenson, Mike James and Etan Thomas) is the primary factor I see in whether the Kings will keep McCants. Otherwise, I think it’s likely the Kings will let McCants walk because Beno makes too much to sit on the bench and be the next Kenny Thomas.

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....

Last night I lost all respect for Natt

Cisco has been out there competing his ass off with a broken finger right in front of his eyes. And he wouldn’t put Speed in the game because of a stiff ankle? He’s the best player on the team, stiff ankle or not.

by Aykis16 on Mar 11, 2009 10:30 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

alternative theory

KMart discretely let the coaching staff know that his ankle had stiffened up, Natt made the decision to keep him out because he wouldn’t be able to guard anyone in the 4th when you need stops, but after the game KMart told the press he would have loved to play because he doesn’t want to come off like a guy who won’t play hurt while Cisco is playing hard and effectively with an injury.

Isn't stiffening up from swelling?

and isn’t swelling treated with ice. I didn’t see any shots of Martin with anything on his ankle.

Would Ricky get the ball to the bigs?

Going back to the comment about ball distribution between KMart and McCants… The thing that I notice every night is Spencer and/or Jason are the first down the court. You can’t ask for anything more than your bigs sprinting the floor. They beat their man down the court, gain position on him in the paint or on the block and PLEAD for the ball, only to get passed up or have to move out of the paint for 3 sec violation. I see this every night and I can’t stand it. I only know Ricky from a little bit of the olympics. I know he is fast, but don’t know how well he sees the court and his judgement on things developing before they happen. A solid point guard would change everything given the hustle the young bigs are putting out IMO. I can only dream of what a point like CP3 could do with our young bigs on the break…

Not to show my ass, but ...

The first bullet on everyone’s love letter to Rubio has been his court vision.

I haven’t seen a ton of highlights of the outlet pass, but everything we’ve seen to this point has shown some amazing court vision and court awareness. As we’ve learned with Chris Paul (as you mention), that’s a skill that does wonder for an NBA team.

Beno, for instance, has almost no court vision. Jason Williams had it, but also had bad decision-making.

Did it really?

Beyond 1999, did it really do that? I remember being frustrated alot more with Jason in those 2 seasons (I didn’t watch any regular season games in 1999) than I was happy with him. I do remember remarking on the savvy he had. That was something I think Rubio has as well (seeing some of his youtube clips I’ve noticed some of that).

No doubt youre right,

we became a better team after we traded him and you cant eliminate the bad parts of his game
without also eliminating the good parts. Ive always compared him to cocaine, its really really really great for like fiiiive maybe ten minutes but then its just shitty for the rest of the night. But at the time, coming off the richmond era, his variations on the no look and behind the back passes along with his crossover and streaky jumper made him the funnest guard in the league, he was never the best or even close but man was he fun to watch. And with Webb and Vlade to orchestrate the offense his erratic play was more easily forgiven.

I loved watching Williams but...

He was all flash and no substance. Every game it seemed like he moved the 3 point line further back until the dude was practically shooting half court shots, on the fly, in transition while Vlade was smoking an un-filtered ciggy and Webb was smooching on Tyra. Good times but he Kings could never have gotten to the Western Conference Championships with J-Will chucking on one end and not playing D on the other. Besides all of that I loved the guy.

I think the one who was happiest for the trade at the time

was Coach Adelman. J-Will, besides having mad Globetrotter skills could not run the offense and was a defensive liability.

Additionally, he was a distraction on and off the court (Remember he and Webber racing? The racist/sexual comments?) The Bibby trade was a steal from the Griz.

by betweentheeyes on Mar 11, 2009 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Im just curious as to your thoughts,

did Bibby run the offense once acquired? My thoughts-Moreso, he didnt chuck the ball with 20 seconds still on the shotclock but we still ran our stuff out of the highpost. We were never a pick and roll or penetrate and kick team, it was always dump it to the highpost with lots of off-the-ball movement. We became a better team after the trade but i think it was more a result of clutch play(he even turned blowouts into nail biters, ha. ha. ha.) and leadership, which you may say is semantics but we definately werent filling a defensive whole with Bibby like you implied.

and you dont make the list of white nba players who look like they beat their wives without some racist/sexist comments. http://wnpwllah.tumblr.com/page/1

I’d like to talk about thier post players getting to the free throw line 16 times (and hitting 15)

and ours getting there ….once. ONE $#@!ing Free throw?! Go to the hoop with some bad intentions guys!!!! (be an optimist and say Noce’s 1 attempt was while he was at the 4 – and stiiiiill)
I’ve said it before, but when your jumpshots stop falling you need to be able to throw it inside for a play at the freakin’ rim! Doesn’t have to be a great play – but you have to do it and have players who want to do it. Hawes line, 20 / 10, yeah thats great (really) but go in and draw some fouls young man!

3 problems I have with your assumption that Hawes/Thompson can't draw fouls

One, is that they have to get the ball in position to be fouled first. Nobody is fouling them. Two, they need to be able to establish themselves better to draw those fouls, and they haven’t done that yet. Third, the guards penetrating is the single highest factor of Hawes and/or Thompson getting to the line because it will be based off that penetration. I think JT especially, and Hawes to a degree, can get to the line more. However, that is also something that Martin does very well among all players in the NBA. If JT & Shawes are getting the ball consistently in the rhythm of the offense, and they get fouled here & there, I can live with that. Creating foul shots is the least I see of Shawes & JT’s problems.

They're Post players

they’re supposed to play at the rim, not ten feet from it. Too much BMiller familiarity around here. I though we wanted to get away from that(?)

I’m not talking about intentionally drawing fouls – I’m talking about playing close enough to the rim that they Will draw fouls.

post

Hawes rarely sees the ball in the low post regardless of getting good position, which he often does at the beginning of many possessions. And the majority of the time, the offense places him in the high post or on the wing. JT sometimes get the ball down there – but not often – and at this point he’s not all that creative with his back to the basket.

Our young bigs getting good looks at the basket from the low-post is definitely a work in progress.

Hawes rarely sees the ball in the low post regardless of getting good position, which he often does at the beginning of many possessions.

This is so irritating. Isn’t it easier when you have a player who can help you score your points easier? The biggest problem is that this team hasn’t been long around enough, and there are too many players on this team who are just being cobbled together to try and make something work.

The bottom line with this group is that they’re lack of playing intelligently, and with purpose, has hurt them far more than their lack of talent has. This team has plenty of talent.

Hawes doesn’t get the ball in the post for two reasons:
1. Coaching. They WANT to make Hawes a perimeter player. Coachie has been encouraging Hawes to shoot threes, which is like when Yoda assigned Anakin to guard Senator Palpatine.
2. Spencer likes to shoot threes, has always liked to shoot threes and no one is going to tell him otherwise.

I like what I've seen

He works from the outside first so that the opposing defense respect him a bit and then he goes to work in the post. Yes, he is not in the post enough but the times he is, he’s more effective than he was before. He’s also not forcing it and letting the gae come to him. It’s very encouraging if you ask me…

True

On top of that we haven’t even talked about his improvement on the defensive end. I think he’s being more a presence lately (saw that live in the Denver game). I’m not saying he will become a great defender and shot blocker but I think that his development is going to help in the “interior defense” department.

Yep his defense has improved

JT’s too actually. These guys are so young, and this team is so incomplete, that it’s a bit difficult to grade them on total ability.

What I do know? They’re going to be very good players for quite awhile assuming they stay healthy. (Which is always the case with any player.)

At this point ed

What I would like to see from Spencer is about 15 points a night, at least 8 boards, 3 assists 2 blocks and a steal every night. That seems reasonable for him.

I would like to see JT score about 12 pts a night, grab 10 boards a night, get 2 blocks & stls, and at least an assist a night. Would not be bad production considering both are still so young.

(My prediction (or hope) that Spencer would be around 10 & 5 for the season (pts/boards), and lo & behold, he’s actually averaging 7 boards on the season now. His passing, almost 2 a game (1.8), is improving too. Spencer is ahead of where I though he would be, and if he keeps growing, he’s going to arrive much quicker, and be much better, than I certainly thought he would be. I hope he does.

Both of these guys need to learn a pump fake.

I see a lot of little issues that should have been fixed in season from both Hawes and Thompson. Hawes thinks that when he gets stopped, its time to make 6 more moves and force it when he is so close to the rim he only needs to give a little up fake an then finish. Thompson thinks that he bigger than everyone he plays against because thats the level of competition he faced for 4 years of college. Thompson has improved on bring the ball too low which caused half of his early season turn-overs. But Thompson still tries to go over or through big men and has his lunch handed to him. Pump fake dude, head and shoulders, just head, wiggle your ears, do something other than set up a defender for a easy one. They will learn and they will both be effective bigs for a long time.

In fairness to JT ...

… he isn’t being featured. At all. He’s basically a Mikki that can rebound and dunk in traffic right now. And to be fair to his guards and Natt, he’s had slippery fingers the last few weeks. Solomon set him up on the left block late in the third, and JT just couldn’t keep a hold of it. Too, too many turnovers.

by Ziller on Mar 11, 2009 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's off his mojo right now

I think he’s hit the rookie ball. The point you meant about the ball slipping through his fingers all hark back to something that happens when you’re unsure of where you are on the court.

I see 2 problems with JT: One is his own issue’s keeping him from getting better. Two is Kenny Natt and how difficult it is to put a team together on the fly (not Kenny’s fault), and B, how Natt expects JT to perform overall in the scheme of the offense.

Personally, seeing what JT does, and doesn’t do, is very illuminating. This couldn’t be working out better, long term, for the Kings than it has, with the sole exception of not seeing Greene get any minutes whatsoever.

What really happened, nobody knows??

I am really thrilled with McCants like everybody else is. It is very difficult to second-guess what actually happened yesterday, however, I was very surprised that coach Natt stating that the Sacramento Kings lost this game in the first quarter. I simply do not believe that! Secondly, I pointed out some time ago that I really was not all that thrilled at how coach Natt instituted his substitutions or stopped another teams run. I want to believe that coach Natt told us the truth about Kevin Martin, however, I’m not exactly sure if Kevin actually was taken out for medical reasons and if he had “gotten cold”I just don’t know!

Concerning Mr. McCants.

There is no doubt in my mind that anything and everything should be done to keep my pants on this team. Although he was billed as being mostly an offensive player he seems to be a terrific and unafraid defensive player. Some other people about this comment have made some suggestions as to whether Beno should go and at this point time I seem to agree with some kind of trade that would get Beno out of here and keep McCants in the roster. He is absolutely terrific and with his enthusiasm I think he would become an even better defensive player

First off, I wouldn’t get too excited about what happened to Kmart last night. In some ways it was similar to the way Jason Richardson used to be treated every night at Golden State. It’s probably a one-time occurence.

We need a point guard and more depth at the big spots, but we seem to have an excess of 2 guards. So trade Martin and/or Beno in the summer and get a point guard or big back.

That gives you:

PG-Somebody not named Beno with a draft pick or Solomon or Bjax as backup.
SG-McCants/Cisco and/or maybe a draft pick (James Harden?)
SF-Nocioni/Cisco
Bigs-Hawes/Thompson/guy we got for Martin/draft pick.

Let’s be flexible.

Agree with (among other things)

That flexibility is important, and trading Beno. I’m really not sure how James Harden will help this team in the long run.

I disagree that the Kings can keep Beno and McCants long run. You have to keep one or the other, and a personal guess is, that if you keep McCants you have to dump Beno’s long term contract on another team.

McCants is instant offense -

He is, in some respects, a younger version of Bobby Jackson – he plays with purpose, he shoots a bit too much, he scores the ball well, he defends well (no way he can rebound like BJax who is the ultimate 6’1" power forward on the boards). But McCants is the second coming of AI as a passer.

McCants as a killer off the bench is where he belongs IMO. I see him in that role on whatever team he ends up on. Will it be the Kings? Should it be the Kings? I can see him with Garcia who is a mixed bag as a facilitator. Can I see McCants with Beno – maybe if you add a back up big who can defend the rim and doesn’t need the ball (Thabeet). The Kings management has historically bought into a known commodity (Cisco, Beno) over an unknown. No one on this page would be surprised if McCants is wearing purple and white next season.

The thing about McCants is – the guy has talent. I am in favor ot this team collecting talent, and a coach who can figure out how to use that talent.

I love the crazy passion around here

So, McCants has had what, 3 good weeks, playing great in a very limited role and now we’ve anointed him. The guy has played very well. He’s also facing Europe or being the 10th guy on a team if he’s lucky next year if he didn’t play well between the time he was traded to the end of the year.

All of our guys have at one time or another put together a good looking 3 weeks, lay off the Koolaid with McCants. He’s a 43% shooter for his career because before he got here, his career was defined by jacking up whatever he could in the hopes it went in like he was playing NBA Live. Maybe he’s grown up, but this hasn’t been crazy passion, its been passionately crazy around here regarding McCants.

Agreed

This guy’s been in the league long enough to build up a reputation. A few good weeks of play in a new environment are impressive, but not enough to believe the guy has turned himself around.

Also, I just don’t see how you realistically fit him and Kevin Martin in the lineup, unless you plan on signing McCants to play limited minutes off the bench.

Yeah I got a greater question

Is McCants ready for that?

He also would get

the minutes when Kevin is hurt. And maybe, as has been suggested, they play them together in some small ball lineups. Bottom line: playing time tends to reflect the ability of the players. If he’s playing well, the next coach will find a way to use him.

I agree with that CC but only up to a point

What does McCants bring to the table other than scoring? If that’s all he’s really bringing down the road, how important is it to keep him? My point is, if he isn’t bringing multi dimensional ability elsewhere in the equation (defensively—how he scores offensively, and in what matchup’s he does it for instance), then how much value will he really bring?

I’m surprised, and I’m not. McCants doesn’t have much before he finds himself out of the league. The question is whether he can maintain this over the rest of the season (I imagine he will). McCants is one of many questions (towards the bottom of the list in my view) that the franchise has to answer in the upcoming months.

Ummm

Is the 2nd quote my quote with Kmart inserted in it? Well, there are a couple of other things Martin is better at than McCants. One is offensive efficiency. Two, he is a better, and much more willing, passer. Three, Martin is a piece here already. McCants is a player who has made some short impressions over 3 weeks. Martin has done this consistently for 4 seasons.

Somewhat agree

Although it’s clear that you are worried Kevin’s recent history battling injuries might be the Kevin we have ongoing – similarly, I’m worried that McCant’s history as an underachiever/malcontent might be a little more accurate than what we are seeing currently (a guy really applying himself to get a new contract).

I kinda wonder if this guy has “Bonzi Wells” written all over him.

For Three

Since you replied to me, I’m going to assume that I have been pre-qualifed under the “crazy passion” title.

If the statement “I’m all for adding McCants at the right price” qualifies as crazy passion, then pass me a staight jacket. I’m not saying that he should supplant Martin. But a few years ago, we signed a a guard out of Minnesota to a reasonable contract, and he flat lit up ARCO for the next several years with his energy off the bench and his ability to fill in admirably as a starter when called upon.

Just sayin’…

I was more picking at:

the “stone-cold scorer” line, and yes it was more intended for the entire audience than specifically your post.

You are usually so reasonable section, we have to nitpick to tease. :)

Fair enough

Perhaps “stone-cold shooter and some time scorer” would have been more accurate. And I will agree with you that it is amazing that a guy can come here and log about 100 minutes and then some see him as a better alternative than Kevin Martin.
