NCAA Brackets: Do YOU have what it takes?

Star-divide

Like last year, I've created a group at Yahoo! Sports called Sactown Madness. If you are 18 and in the continental US and agree to give up your first-born child, you can enter for a chance to win $10,000 if you pick the best bracket. That goes up to $5 million if you have the perfect bracket. And it will track the standings and determine who from this board has picked the best bracket --aka "bragging rights."

Give me your best shot. They don't include the play-in game Tuesday in the contest, so all entries are due by the tip-off of the first game Thursday morning.

Click this link and join the group. Here is the rest of the info you need to join:

Private Group Name: Sactown Madness.

Password: Sactown.

Bracket Name: Bracket Busters

After that, just fill out your bracket. Best of luck to all who take part.

If you entered last year's contest, you should have already received an invitation to join this group. I'll provide any other details as they become available.

If you go here, you can join the group.

The group name is Sactown Madness, the bracket name is Bracket Busters, the group ID# is 147525 and the password is sactown. That should be enough to get you in the loop.

Feel free to invite others to play.

Brackets

I fill out the NCAA brackets with my son and daughter every year. My son is 13 and my daughter is 19 and goes to college out of town, so the Yahoo thing becomes an easy way to get her picks. I have a few others who play and we post the brackets on the wall in my office and circle every game. Every win counts the same. We have a lot of fun with it and it is a great family bonding experience.

My son plays the chalk for the most part and usually wins or is near the top of the pack. I usually have a few too many 13 seeds winning a couple of games, but do pretty well in getting teams to the Final Four. My daughter goes for some longshots and that usually comes back to bite her. But one of these years …

I usually spend too much time on the picks. This year I kept it simple and added overall wins to wins in the last 10 games and then added five points if the team was in one of the six major conferences. If I had a tie, I went with the lower seed. In some cases I looked for a home court advantage. I threw everything out with a couple of upset picks.

I use a bit of statistical analysis

Mixed with a few hunches and usually do fairly well. One interesting thing I heard on the radio is that this is the second lowest scoring field in tournament history, and low scoring fields usually result in a lot of upsets.

I just hope my Alma Mater love for CSUN doesn’t cripple me when Memphis wins it’s bracket.

by Doubl3Dos3 on Mar 17, 2009 11:59 AM PDT reply actions

I know

I’ll be second guessing that all week. That way when I switch it back to Memphis at 8am Thursday I’ll at least feel that I thought my team could take it for a few days. I actually do think the upset is somewhat possible but maybe that’s just cuz I read the right propaganda.

Holy crap

First run through my bracket and I have Gonzaga beating Utah State in the championship game. Someone must have slipped a hallucinogen in my latté this morning.

I was overthinking

Just looking at the raw numbers, I didn’t see anyone real dominant in the field. I really like Gonzaga, and still see them making a run…but Utah State??? Geez…

Just by looking at team colors. :)

The problem with my brackets every year

is that somehow I always end up having the top seeds still there by the Elite 8. I’m not a big upset kinda guy. We’ll see how I do

ridiculous

It cost me twelve chew toys to get the picks from your dogs, and they told me 14 dogs, with 5 dogs going to the final four. And now you’re telling me it’s supposed to be 17? I demand a refund, damnit!

Not stupid dogs. Evil dogs.

I am so pissed

I entered the contest, but it didn’t take my picks for some reason. I have Western Kentucky, just missed with VCU and my only other misses were Michigan and Cal. Oh well.

Found it

It was in an “unassigned” area.

My picks went 13 of 16. Too bad VCU didn’t win.

I lost VCU as well

I had them going to the Elite 8

Then Memphis lost (sigh)

Somehow I’m still middle of the pack – some of you guys really suck! :)
