Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

"It could be this June. Rubio has made it clear that he would like to enter the 2009 draft, according to sources close to the situation. The 18-year-old Rubio is draft-eligible because he will turn 19 before the end of 2009.

But it's not that easy. Rubio has a complicated, multimillion-dollar contract buyout with his Spanish team, DKV Joventut Barcelona. NBA teams are allowed to contribute a maximum of $500,000 to buy out the contract of a foreign player. That means if Rubio seeks to leave Joventut, he could be forced to use most of the money from his first NBA contract to pay for the buyout."

Great it's Chris Mannix of all people saying it too.....

I don’t have any real amount of respect for much of anything Mannix writes. But if everything he did quote was true, then, Griffin is going to have competition for the top spot. This time a year ago, it was Michael Beasley’s spot to lose. It wasn’t until Chicago won the top pick in the lottery, and some debating early on, that Rose ever took Beasley off the top spot. All year long it was Beasley 1 and Rose 2. This isn’t an argument for Rubio over Griffin.

Again, and I mean this, but this is one of many pieces of conjecture we’re going to be hearing about Rubio. Until Rubio makes the annoucement, with himself tied to it, then It’s all going to be conjecture. There is, after all, no guarantee Blake Griffin doesn’t stay in Oklahoma for another 2 years regardless of the reality that says otherwise.

We aren't the only ones

Whitey Gleason emailed this link to me, too. Sacramento has Rubio Fever.

And while this contradict the point I made about American HS players leaving early

in the other fanshot I posted awhile ago, Rubio has been playing professionally since he was 14 while attending HS. Besides, it’s not like Rubio just hit the scene. He’s been on the radar since his landmark game in the 16 & under championships a few years ago.

This is a moot point

Until Rubio personally declares and we’re in a position to draft him so I won’t get excited until we have either the 1 or 2 pick and he has declared. Don’t want to be let down.

Yeah no doubt on that score

No friggin doubt. The argument of Griffin vs Rubio is moot until the Kings are actually in position to get either.

It's all about the shoes

Like I’ve been saying all along Rubio will enter the draft because he has to much to lose off of endorsements. Have you seen the NIKE shoes he has been wearing? Who cares if he’ll make more money on his basketball contract in Europe next year then he will in the NBA. It’s not about the basketball contract its about the shoe and endorsement contracts. Do you think Kobe or LeBron make more playing basketball or selling shoes? Trust me he’ll make 10X more off of endorsements if he enters the draft this year. If NIKE wants him in the NBA next year, he’ll be in the NBA. Just call NIKE and they’ll tell you if he’s coming or not. He’ll be the 1st or 2nd pick next year…. Hopefully the KINGS pick.

Why hasn't he made some of that money already?

Doesn’t NIKE sell shoes in Europe? Of course the European market pales in comparison to the US, but from what I understand, the guy is a celebrity superstar across the pond. Shouldn’t he be making some endorsement dough already? Or are there rules against it because he’s young, or do European players just not get endorsement deals? I would think since he already has customized Nikes, he should be getting something, right?

I think his parents have kept him off limits

While he was still in HS. Now he’s a legal adult, and I think the rules have changed some.

makes sense, thanks

so as of now, he wears those custom nikes but doesnt get any $$ from them?

Kings could really use a frozen ping pong ball...

hopefully he really declares, that way the top of the draft is strengthened and we don’t get hosed if we miss out on the top pick.

There now I've met the 75 word count. -pookeyguru

Someone smarter than me...
NBA teams are allowed to contribute a maximum of $500,000 to buy out the contract of a foreign player

Could a signing bonus “coincidentally” be for the same amount as the buyout costs?

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

Draft picks are on a fixed payscale

So there’s no wiggle room there. I think the top pick in the draft makes around $2.5-3 million a year. However, a guy like Rubio would probably land mega endorsement deals, which would more than offset the buyout.

Rubio will be able to afford his buyout

Let’s not worry about that.

European Market isn't as good as USA.

Sure he sells shoes in Europe but he’ll sell 10X more by coming to the NBA. The European market is nothing like the US market. He’ll be even more glorified in Europe and Spain then he is already. He’ll pick-up even more endorsement deals. Why wait a year and risk the injury and lose out on millions? There’s just to much at stake…. He’ll be in the draft this year you can BANK on it.

Do you speak Spanish?

Or did you use a program to translate that?
