Open Thread: March Madness, Day 1

A bit late, but I bet there's interest here.

I couldn't be happier that my bracket's champion is locked in a fierce first-round battle with a #15 seed. Couldn't be happier.

Yep.

As is most everyone in the country’s bracket.

Matadors!

Even if they lose they are putting up a hellova fight!

Oh well.

Glad I went with the gut and not the heart. Even though that would have been the upset of the century.

yeah I have memphis

going all the way, survived one there but they aren’t exactly setting the world on fire. By the way, what is the full story on that kid from dixon on cal state northridge they were talking about earlier?

Great game

20 minutes (not because of fouls), 20pts, 13 bds, 2 blks

Now, they weren’t exactly tested. . . .

20 pts, 13 rbds and 2 blocks in 20 minutes not enough?

I know they weren't playing a great team

but not being satisfied with a pt a minute and a rebound every 92 seconds seems -

what’s the word I’m searching for?

Oh yeah – craaaaazy!

Chattanooga?

You serious? Their frontline goes 6’7", 6’7", 6’5". They finished 6th in the Southern Conference. They don’t even classify anyone on their frontline as a center.

That performance doesn’t change the question of whether Thabeet is getting by strictly on his physical skills.

Lonely people mixing with one another? Breeding? Creating an even lonelier generation? You're not allowing natural selection to do its work. You're like the guy that invented the seat belt.

by otis29 on Mar 20, 2009 5:16 AM PDT up reply actions

OK, so you don't know much about college ball

Take a look at the very best team’s starters- a LOT of them don’t start a Center, its very very common. Anyway, there are some other players on UConn who also need to touch the ball. I think you guys have taken the opposite side of this question to a silly level.

Thanks for the insult

And for equating Chattanooga with “the very best teams” of college basketball. These are not upper level talents, and 6-7, 6-7 and 6-5 is a small frontline, even by college basketball standards. Dude is 7’3" tall, there’s no doubt he’s going to beat up a team like Chattanooga.

Honestly, your shilling for Thabeet is fine, I really don’t have a problem with it. I do like parts of the guy’s game, but having watched him play a half dozen times this season (yes, I do watch college basketball on occasion), I’d have to say there are serious questions about his ability to translate his skills to the NBA. Getting a Dikembe Mutumbo type player would help the Kings a lot IMO…getting that type of guy with a top-3 pick scares me though.

by otis29 on Mar 20, 2009 8:34 AM PDT up reply actions

It's why I didn't bother to say anything

I’m more interested to see what Thabeet does in the 2nd round agains A&M, and if Udub advances to the Sweet 16 past Purdue, which everyone says is a tough matchup for them, how Thabeet matches up against Dentmon and Brockman. Thabeet may be a top 5 pick, but how he does well against these guys will be something the NBA will guaranteed to be watching.

A&M, Uconn’s 2nd round opponent, has a guy whose 6’8. two guys who are 6’9, and one guy who is 6’10 and another who is 7 foot tall. Good test for Thabeet. Good scouting opportunity too.

Ok, how about some alumni support

I have nothing for the brackets – U of Miami (FLORIDA, damn you all) is NIT. They beat the Friars of Providence in the first round.

Where is Johnny Salmons when you need him? Well, there is always footsball.

Anyone have upsets in the first round? I am already down one with College Station Aggies over the LDS.

Broke the press, and stopped the clock. But taking the lead back to 5 hurts Illinois.
