Open Thread: March Madness, Day 4
To this point I have been neglectful in pointing out that SBNation's general NCAA Basketball blog -- Searching for Billy Edelin -- is awesome.
More Blair, Harden, Flynn, Hill, DeRozan and Aldrich today. Ty Lawson looked incredible Saturday night. So did that one kid who plays for Oklahoma. Can't remember his name. We should look into him though.

Harden
Shooting bricks like crazy in this tournament. I suspect his stock is going to take a huge hit. I think he’ll probably be drafted around 10th to 15th just because of his horrible performance in this tournament.
Yeah, I can't believe he's still top five now
One bad game,ok – but all three?

Harden's stock won't really drop
Until teams find serious weaknesses that make them hesitant to draft him top 5. I doubt that’s the case yet.

Remember -
OJ Mayo made his move at the individual workouts (the same individual workouts that may have contributed to Brook Lopez dropping). Guys like Harden (and Teague) will still have an opportunity to state their case. But now they will have to be impressive enough at those workouts to undo their tourney performances.

but 3 – Ouch! !! I get your point and wonder about BTE’s 10-15, but I really do think he’s out of the top five, he’s been so unimpressive.

Went to my high school, so I’m aflutter with hometown pride. I’m not suggesting we draft him or anything.
At least not this year…

My bad
Sophomore at the University of Dayton, had 27/10 against WV on Friday. Might be the best athlete in college, still needs considerable seasoning.

Nice find, Pook
I still think it’s nuts that he’d be that high, but Wright’s athleticism is ridiculous. I hope he stays in college at least one more year.
That being said, I really want to hear that hack Napear have to scream out about how this guy is taking it to the hole.

Allright, I have a question
what the hell kind of offense is ASU running? Harden is moving back and forth along the free throw line sometimes setting screens. A high-post off guard is their offense?

A note of caution
These are some comments that I pulled from draft analysis blogs from a couple of years ago about a certain player-
“Double teams cause him trouble – Lacks passing ability – Needs to work on defense, bites on head fakes – Needs to develop an NBA body – Does not demand ball and sometimes looks tired or uninterested – Gets pushed around – Settles on the perimeter sometimes.”
The player? Kevin Durant.
None of these guys are perfect coming out of college. MJ and Magic were said to be questionable perimeter shooters, Bird was too slow, Duncan was a fairly slight inside-only player that showed little emotion…
I post this primarily as it pertains to Blake Griffin but it can also apply to other players as well. Griffin’s 59% FT percentage concerns me, and the comparisons to Carlos Boozer end (for the time being, anyway) when you consider that what makes Boozer Boozer is his ability to finish at the rim with either hand, and I’m not sure that Griffin realizes that he has a left hand (also known as “JT Syndrome”). That said, he is clearly the best prospect coming out of college this year. Unless someone from overseas checks in and impresses, Griffin’s the man.

this brings up the difficult question: Are NBA players born or made?
hence the draft for potential – not what they are (as draftees) but what can they become and will they become it.
The answer is both – nature and nuture. GP seems to understand it better than most, thank goodness.
by betweentheeyes on Mar 22, 2009 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions
Potential is rawness in a certain aspect of the game...both athleticism and IQ
It’s someone who doesn’t have a high BBall IQ at all, shoots circus shots, etc etc. It’s also someone with a really high Basketball IQ, but doesn’t have an NBA body.
Example: Thabeet has size and size is extremely valuable in the NBA. However, he doesn’t have a high Basketball IQ, so he has potential to be a great player if he has the motor to learn the game.
Example 2: Rubio has extremely high Basketball IQ, almost off the charts. However, he doesn’t have an NBA body, so he has the potential to be a great player if he has the motor to put lots of meat on his bones.
It’s a player already gifted in a certain area, but can improve, though nurture, in another area.
And now, my 2 cents on Hasheem Thabeet
After Griffin and Rubio, I like Thabeet if (and this is a 7’3" "if") he has the ability to play pick and roll defense.
I will never forget going to the Kings open practice, and watching Kenny Thomas execute his task in the pick and roll defense, while Justin Williams just couldn’t grasp the concept. And that is why Justin Williams rarely played, and that is why Justin Williams does not have a job in the NBA today. Sure, Williams’ 33% FT percentage didn’t help him, but when you are a defensive player that cannot grasp a defensive concept, you’re done.
If Thabeet is capable of playing pick and roll defense, he could be very nice in a rotation with Thompson and Hawes. Again, that’s a big “if.” It’s the difference between being Dikembe Mutombo and Adonal Foyle.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
Thabeet is a smart guy
not sure that was true with Justin – and not sure if that always translates on the court. But I’ve seen him do well in pick and roll situations, he seems to rotate well with just a step or two. He’s very calm and collected, patient, which I think is a key to defending the pick and roll.
Now, everyone knows He’s my #2 pick
but I’m well aware that the problem with judging big college Centers is that you rarely get to see them against similarly sized and talented players.
My Purdue team is primarily a perimeter team that will try to pull him away from the basket, so we’ll have to see whether that game will showcase his skills either. They do have a pretty good 6’10" Forward (no Center) in Jujaun Johnson.

Dunno
I just watched him chew up Dayton, but I don’t think UD has anyone decent over 6’8". He had a decent year in a fairly weak Big 12, so far as I can tell. My guess is If he makes it to the NBA, he’ll make a good bench player, but I might take a stab at him with a 2nd round pick.
Rocks are free, and slingshots easily stolen.
DX has him 8th in the 1st round
I don’t think Aldrich would drop to a low 1st round pick.

Eric Maynor. He seems like the right kind of PG for us; obviously not with our #1, but I’d like to figure out how to get him if we don’t draft Rubio.

Ray Allen not a combo IMO
Warren is and I think he’ll be a good NBA player. Hard to tell from a Frosh but he passes well when he wants to. If you’re looking for Bjax2 I think he’s it.
Maynor looked very good to me.

Ray Allen isn't a combo G?
You mean he doesn’t run offenses and isn’t a good enough passer to warrant that? Really? The guy with 3.8 career average in assists doesn’t pass? The guy who played with Cassell, who is not a true pass first PG either, and average OVER 3 1/2 assists while playing with Cassell, was not a combo G?
Sorry, but umm, what? (And, his ball handling has never been recognized for the quality it always has been.)

And distribute like a point guard as well-that's a combo guard.
however, in lietothegirls defense, Ray Allen isn’t really the current definition of a combo guard (see Dwyane Wade) in that he’s way more regarded to be a pure shooter than a distributer, while Dwyane Wade is know as a scorer as well as a distributer.
It’s hard to tell, but Ray Allen is a combo guard.

I like this guy
He reminds me of Brandon Roy in the way he plays; he controls the tempo well, sets his teammates up well for offense, and almost dribbles his man to sleep when he’s looking to score. What’s most impressive to me about him are the leadership skills, in that he knows when his team needs him to score or make a play. Rubio may be the better playmaker, but Maynor definitely has the better offensive skill set. It’ll be interesting to see how everything all plays out in June.
