Beno Udrih's days as the Kings' starting point guard are numbered. Count the games remaining in the season. Add a few games in the opening weeks of 2009-10, while his successor scoots along on training wheels. And there you have it.

The search is on. Tyreke Evans. Jonny Flynn. Eric Maynor. Tony Douglas. Ty Lawson. Darren Collison. Possibly Ricky Rubio. The list of potential draftees will expand as the NCAA Tournament continues, extending to the European Final Four and the pre-draft workouts in Chicago.

Wow

I have never seen Voisin go this hard after a player who’s likely going to be here a while.

Udrih

To Ailene, he must be the bizarro Peja.

Udrih's own fault

If he batted his eyelashes at her once or twice, he could be the new Peja.

This is almost funny in a way

Because Beno had not been as terrible as he had earlier in the season.

There are theories. Udrih’s fleshy, ill-defined body could use a makeover; one wonders whether he has been introduced to strength coach Daniel Shapiro.

In a previous article, I believe written by her, she praised him for keeping in shape by doing yoga, focusing on strength and flexibility, and not bulking up.

He was hampered by a hip flexor early in the season and a strained foot in recent weeks, and he has never been one to play well when ailing.

Nobody plays well when ailing.

What did he do, turn her down Saturday?

That said, though, my biggest concern with Beno is his seemingly less-than-stellar court vision and his lack of trust in his teammates.

It’s possible that having a real coach and a consistent roster will help the situation correct itself, but, then, as the inimitable Pookey said, he’s improved over the past couple of months. So why the hit piece now?

Coming to you live from the land of interim coaches.

It doesn't seem

Like his teammates trust him either. During warm ups on Friday nobody talked to him, he had to go out of his way to high five players, they never went to him. And I remember a few times where Donte in-bounded the ball looked Udrih in the eyes, no defender in proximity, and threw the ball to Cisco. If there’s a person in that locker room who seems whiny, willing to deflect any critical barbs to a player out of rotation, and unable to mesh with the others—-right now that’s gotta be Beno.

I hope that changes/gets better, but more than likely we’ve just purchased our own five year Kenny Thomas. We signed a player in the off season for a hefty contract without an other team competing against us for the player. His only attribute is that he’s a point guard and every team always needs more point guards.

If yr not happy with the results, lower yr expectations.

I'm not sure about the timing,

but I agree with the sentiment. Give me someone who will take responsibility for the team, can shoot and will get people involved. Bring on Stephen Curry or Eric Maynor.

But I like how he plays coming off the bench. We need a starter at PG, draft or FA, it’s got to happen.

I agree

Beno is not a distributor. His best offensive skill is getting into the lane and making shots, but it hurts the Kings hugely because his head-down approach doesn’t lead to easy buckets for other players.
That’s a problem, since Shawes and JT don’t have the ballhandling ability to create good shots for themselves and KMart is so much more effective when he isn’t forced to play one on one (which – along with his injury – is why he’s relied so heavily on drawing perimiter fouls this year).

Off the bench, however, he could be the ballhandler with a scoring spark that so many teams covet (Leandro Barbosa, Booby Gibson, Bobby J in his prime, etc.). He will continue to be overpaid, but that’s just something we’re going to have to live with (for a long, long time). And if we can nab a quality PG at rookie-scale cost, we could have 48 minutes of good to great PG play without wasting a disproportionate amount of cap space.

Rubio's 6'4

It’s always possible the Kings could play Beno & Rubio together and run Beno off the ball. (That’s just one example off the top of my head.)

Big IF

IF the Kings can move up in the draft with their second pick, my choices at this point, for the Kings to try and draft would be:
1. Rubio
2. Evans
3. Lawson
4. Teague
5. Curry
6. Maynor
7. Jennings
8. Warren

All other point guards should fall to where the Kings draft already or are not good enough in my opinion to move up to get.

I think that if the Kings can’t get Rubio they should try all they can to get Evans or Lawson. Evans is more of a scorer while Lawson is the best all-around point guard with a great mix of scoring and playmaking. Great defender also with 2 steals a game in under 30 minutes of play.

wow

You think 8 different PG’s could start for the Kings…even Curry (a 6 foot 3 shooting guard?) wow….Griffin, trade Haws to the Bobcats for Raymond Felton and maybe some type of Cap Room. So we have Griffin, JT, Garcia, Martin and Felton. I know it’s not the best starting line up, but I like Griffin better than Haws already (i know Haws almost had a tripple double last night) but still, but that’s just me, and I’m not the GM…

by shadowchicken on Mar 23, 2009 11:21 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Give up Hawes for Felton?

Any team can get this guys in the off-season for a bag of chips and a kitkat bar (maybe even a broken off piece of a kitkat bar). Felton can’t shoot….at all and he is a limited play maker due to his shooting weakness. I wouldn’t mind him playing off the bench but to give up a 20 year old 7’-0" tall center for a soon to be back-up point on a sub .500 Eastern Conference team is one of a few reasons why you aren’t a GM.

Plus

The ‘Cats are at almost $57 million next year for 9 players, and that does not include doing any matching for Felton. It’s going to be very tough for them to retain him, and they won’t be interested in sign and trades that will add to their bottom line number.

He is terrible. He is clearly our worst starter and the weakest player who gets big minutes.

by mayfieldcol on Mar 23, 2009 10:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea Beno is bad. Yea he's the worst starting point guard...

But what did you expect? Trading Bibby got us what exactly? NADA. Nothing. The Cap Space would have been available next year either way. The flexibility that Petrie talks about turned into liability. This isnt a team so much as it is a collection of mismatched parts that Petrie has thrown together. WHY? Well, a youth movement for sure, but there must have been some thought to losing big for a high draft pick. It is obvious that Petrie sees something in the draft that he really REALLY likes. Remember how he fawned over Peja, when no one else thought twice about him? And Petrie was mostly right about Peja, and his abilities. Not so much about his defense and durability, but no one could predict he would be made of glass. I think Petrie sees Rubio as a Peja+ player who can take this team or any team to the next level. I’ll bet that there is even efforts behind the scenes with Euroleague officials and any other leverage they can get on this kid. Is Rubio good enough for Petrie to bet all the marbles on? I bet we are going to find out. Watching video of the kid, he sure is exciting. And his shot isn’t polished, but we need him to distribute and bring the team together more than we need his scoring. I really believe this kid has been on Petrie’s radar for some time now, and he plans a Peja like career for Rubio here in Sacramento. Trouble is other teams know this kid is going to be special, so they are also angling to get the kid. So the best the Kings can do is keep loosing with a ragtag unit and a hopeless coach who is totally incompetent. Hey, wait a minute, that is exactly what Petrie has made the Kings into !! A Sure Looser looking for a high draft pick !! Hope it works !!

I have cut the Mouth and Nose out of my Paper Bag, but I am contemplating not cutting out any EYE HOLES so I don't have to watch this mess at all...

Beno's not at fault

Beno is never at fault. From what I see, the guy never takes responsibility and openly screams at players for “their screw up”. I can see a veteran getting into a rookie’s ass, but this guy is never wrong. Tokyo mentioned his teammates don’t trust or like him, I agree fully, and that’s a big problem when he is the 1.

I was bummed when they signed him, one of Petrie’s worst deals. A guy like Pop is not going to let talent slip away, even with Ginobli & Parker in front of them.

Maybe Petrie can use his Jedi powers to convince Beno to go back to Europe.

GP (While subtly waiving his hand in front of Beno ’s face): Beno, you want to play in the Greek leagues.

Beno: (Wearing “European Style” tight jeans.) Geoff, can I get out of my contract, I want to play with Josh Childress in Greece.

GP (again waiving his hand in Beno’s face): Can you tell Eilene you are leaving for personal reasons, God only knows we don’t need any more negative PR around here.

Beno (struggling to breathe in his “European Style” tight jeans): I have spoken to Eilene and informed her that my sisters, mothers, nephews laundromat attendant is ill and in need of my assistance and the Kings are a class act for letting me go.

GP: Beno, one last thing, can you tell Quincy Douby I said hello over there, I hope he makes the club.

I decided to actually read the Bee article before commenting on it

and I know what a fleshy, ill defined body looks like because I have a fleshy, ill defined body and all I will say is that there is no comparison between my body and Beno’s, at least the parts I have seen. I think she was calling him on his conditioning over all while trying for a body slam to the floor. “Hell hath no fury” etc.

Like many of you I can’t imagine anyone drafted in June other than young Mr. Rubio taking Beno’s job from him. What is interesting to me is if Ailene is being used by someone in the King’s organization to put Beno on notice that his conditioning and level of play are unacceptable and if they are: then who is it?

Could Rubio Be Successful Under Natt's Offense?

Does anyone know what Natt’s offense consists of? Us or the players. I’ve heard alot about passing the ball. 3 or 4 passes each possession. Guy setting up around the 3 pt arc and passing until someone jacks up a long ball. Or, KMart braking down his man on the dribble and pulling up in the paint for a jumper +1. Or, Beno getting a high screen and then driving left for a short jumper or dish to a big down low.

I’m not against pointing out a players weaknesses, but I’m also willing to defend a player when he isn’t used properly. Beno has always been a pick & roll PG. That’s what he does best. He can get to the rim though not always finishing well, and he can pick & pop. How many times a game do the Kings run the Pick & Roll? In the last month I’ve seen Martin run it with Hawes & JT, but not Beno.

Decision making and court vision may not be Beno’s strong suits, but who’s fault is it when we don’t use his strong suits?

Well said HT
Does anyone know what Natt’s offense consists of?
but I’m also willing to defend a player when he isn’t used properly. Beno has always been a pick & roll PG.
who’s fault is it when we don’t use his strong suits?

I concur

The PG runs the offense, you have to design PLAYS that maximize his skills and actually run them from time to time.

Plays . . . . . that would be nice!

If you look at the numbers...

Udrih has been about the same as he was last year. Stats are virtually identical, no improvement. I wonder why he was being called such a good player last year and such a horrible player this year if his averages are the same. Petrie paid for this…and this is what he got.

Because

The team is worse this year, and a lot of the broken plays get blamed on the guy who’s supposed to be running the offense.

But take a look at who the floor general’s soldiers have been this year.

Brad Miller, suspended for the first 5.
Kevin Martin, injured for a good stretch.
John Salmons, can’t create without the ball (no assists for Beno here!)
Spencer Hawes, Jason Thompson, Donté Greene, talented but raw.
Quincy Douby, um….yeah, enough said.
Francisco Garcia, Bobby Jackson, Bobby Brown, usually the primary ball handlers when in the game.
Mikki Moore, Mr. Butterclaws.
Andres Nocioni, Will Solomon, Calvin Booth, Ike Diogu, all new to the team.

I’m probably missing someone, but you get the idea. Who’s Beno supposed to pass to in order to rack up obscene assist totals? When he passes to JT who starts to move before he has the ball, resulting in a turnover, it’s charged to Beno. And if you’re looking at his point totals, the biggest criticism when he first came over was that he’s a shoot-first point guard, and nobody wanted that.

There’s been no consistency in the lineups, there’s no offensive system in place, and there’s been absolutely, positively no coaching stability since Adelman’s second-to-last year.

But Beno’s an easy scapegoat. I’ll admit it makes me crazy when he drives the lane without a clue what he’s going to do when he gets in there, but there’s only a couple of those a game. He’s not a bad point guard. And his play is not the “fix this and we’re a contender again” problem.

But the coaching situation might be.

Coming to you live from the land of interim coaches.

Right LPA

There are precious few easy assist chances on this team.
No one really plays at the rim, only Cisco and occasionally other 3 pt shooters actuallly ‘catch and shoot’ to keep the assist chance alive – its not a good situation for assist totals.
