Around SBN: The Lakers Are a Broken Model

Blake Griffen Derby

Today ESPN's John Hollinger predicts the final finish for all teams and has the Kings tied with Washington for worst record in the League.  Is the tiebreaker head-to-head match-up?  conference record?  No matter, keep losin' boys, we need every ping pong ball we can get!  Only wish we were in this position last year... God help us if we are about to relive the Pervis Ellison days, I couldn't take it.

What would it take to get Washingtons pick?

"If you don't have anything good to say, LIE" - Mom

by HighTops on Mar 3, 2009 1:53 PM PST reply actions

Ironically enough...

I’d bet that Washington is probably in ‘win now’ mode, for the most part. They didn’t blow it up at the trade deadline and they are getting Arenas back next season (ha!). If Rubio declares we gotta try to get that pick.

OKC (Seattle) got the 2nd (Durant) and 5th (Green) two years ago and it looks like they are putting together something special with those two high picks. Snagged Westbrook this year. That is a proper rebuild. Actually if they get Griffen that would be the 2nd best thing to us getting him.

by DustyG on Mar 3, 2009 2:07 PM PST up reply actions

I really don't get that "win now" mode

If a season is absolutely lost and you’re one of the worst teams in the league, with no shot at the playoffs, I don’t see how it would help. What’s making players feel good for a day or something over a win, compared to getting a future superstar? In the end, it’s all about the coach and the players wanting to preserve their positions.

by CloudyEyes on Mar 3, 2009 2:29 PM PST up reply actions

The funny thing about Washington's win now mode

is they still lose. Washington has two all-stars on their team and they still find a way to be awful, the chemistry on that team must be horrendous.

by jstnblke41 on Mar 3, 2009 2:44 PM PST up reply actions

Wizards

Supporting cast is god awful:

Mike James, Dominic McGuire, Andray Blatche and Darius Songaila are their multiple year vets.

The other players are inexperienced.

With or without Arenas, this is a team hovering around 40 wins.

BOOK IT!

by kingme18 on Mar 3, 2009 2:58 PM PST up reply actions

Caron Butler + Antawn Jamison = more wins then they have

the variable being terrible coaching and awful team chemistry. They have some talent, Blatche & James are solid (although they are dumb) Nick Young, Deshawn Stevenson & the kid from Nevada are very talented too. Why am I trying to defend the Wizards?

I think the Wizards will keep the pick

Because it’s an easier way for them to yield a quality player than trade whomever it would be. If they got Griffin in a trade, I could see them dumping Jamison in a salary dump.

and I wouldn’t trade my best player for anything less then a handsome ripoff to the other team

by jstnblke41 on Mar 3, 2009 9:54 PM PST up reply actions

I'd give up

The number 1 pick in this years draft + Cisco; O.J Mayo is what we need, think about it,
O.J Mayo
K-Mart
Greene
JT
Hawes

Not only is our line up young and talented, but very unselfish players who just want to win. Tall athletic and smart. Plus all 5 of them would do anything to win. Who can stop this team? kobe could Barely stop O.J. Mayo, K-Mart needs 12 shots and he’s got 30 pts. Greene is just big and can shoot the lights out, JT has heart and will put up 12 and grab 12, and Hawes will grab 10 and put up 8 (on a bad night).

by shadowchicken on Mar 3, 2009 10:05 PM PST reply actions

It would be a good pickup no doubt about it

but if your the Grizz do you take that?

The answer is no.

by jstnblke41 on Mar 3, 2009 10:45 PM PST up reply actions

OJ Mayo

Is just about as young, talented, and cheap as they come in the NBA. Memphis has every reason in the world to hang on to him. The only way you’re going to pry him away from the Grizzlies is by trading them a package that makes them a championship contender immediately and for the indefinite future. Long story short: It’s not going to happen. Period.

p.s. – Mayo isn’t a PG; his assist to turnover ratio is 1:1.

Right.

What the Grizzlies would take, and what he is worth, are two different questions. They may not take anything but a huge package of talent/picks, but he certainly isn’t worth anywhere close to Martin and our 1st. The Kings would actually be in worse shape if a trade like that went down.

If no one else will say it, I will.

I want Blake Griffin. He plays only one way hard unlike most Kings. He takes balls to the basketball only one way —hard. He is super strong and unusually athletic for his size. Even if he was 6’8 and had only one move like Amare did when he started, plant, plant dunk in your face – that works. It embarrasses people and gets lazy NBA players like Shaq to flop. This post compares him to Always Nervous Pervis. He’s not, he’s the only lock in this otherwise worth year to have the a high pick draft. He’s an actual team changer/identity maker unlike cosmetic jewelry like OJ or K-Mart. He’d be great paired with JT or Hawes (and he’s better than both) and Donte.

Draft Balls Be Kind, The Kings Need Blake! The Padres need Strausberg and the Chargers need Mauluaga!

Griffin

I think he’s going to be exposed in the tournament when he faces players as good as him, and his draft stock could drop.

To be frank

I haven’t seen enough of him.

When I have watched him, I haven’t seen a big repertoire of shots, and I haven’t seen him be able to get rebounds that don’t come right to him.

I don’t think he’s going to be able to dunk in the NBA as much as he’s able to in college against smaller foes.

Again, I think the tournament could help address these questions.

The fact of the matter is

he is a very good prospect. He is the consensus #1 pick. If he has short arms, limps and has a Wonderlic score on par with Vince Young it doesn’t matter. The wingspan thing is important to a good degree – I just finished “Reynolds Remembers” ($0.01 on Amazon through a book re-seller) and he talks about how then GM Bill Russell asked #1 Kings draft pick Pervis Ellison to raise his arms high – the 6’11" Ellison had a reach six inches shorter than the 6’9" Russell).

I watch some college basketball and I know enough to know I don’t know who will be a good (or great) pro. You rolls your dice and you takes your chances – with any of them.

by betweentheeyes on Mar 9, 2009 12:02 AM PDT up reply actions

I know he is a very good prospect

I’m just not convinced he’s any better than the other good prospects. He’s certainly gotten more hype. He didn’t play against Kansas, he didn’t play too well against Mizzou, and the Oklahoma schedule has not been that tough. It’s a decent conference, though.

He doesn’t shoot the three-ball much (seven attempts in two years) and he’s a pretty poor free throw shooter (below 60%). More turnovers than assists. Lots of nice dunk highlights. I guess we’ll see.

Kings get # 1, OKC gets #5 (worst possible pick for them).

Kings Trade

and draft Collison later on.

The PG problems are over, and Petrie might still get a decent guy with the 31st pick.

you mean you wouldn't take that in a second?

not that they would ever accept that, but you wouldn’t?

by jstnblke41 on Mar 8, 2009 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn't

If we wanted a great defender and someone to run the offense then I think Felton could be had for much cheaper since the Bobcats have Augustin now.

If we deal with OKC in that scenario

I want to swap picks and get a player as well. Westbrook would be great, but they’re not going to do that. I have no problems tossing in Udrih. I’d take Westbrook and their No. 1 in 2010, though, if it came down to that.

Yes, CC is right

If we got thier pick (#5?) in that deal

Maybe

But teams ARE often willing to do things like that for the consensus #1.

Huh?

They would almost certainly accept that trade. Westbrook is a nice player with a broken jumper. As somewhat of a homer (huge UCLA fan), there is still not a chance I would take Westbrook over Griffin.

by cabz on Mar 9, 2009 12:34 AM PDT reply actions

I disagree

I also didn’t read the trade properly that was proposed and thought that the picks would be swapped essentially, so OKC would certainly take that although that would be quite dumb of the Kings.

I’d take Westbrook over Griffin if for only I know for sure he can play and play very well at this level. I don’t think hes a real point guard but he has gotten better (still a turnover machine) but he can play defense, score and create. That is what all-stars do, and there is a very good chance he will become one. I like Blake, but I hate our point guard situation with a passion.

I still don’t think the Thunder take that, no team trades a top 5 pick who is living up to expectations for anything less then a huge ripoff to the other team.

My Plan would be

Do whatever it takes, cap hit or whatever – to get that Wizards pick. Lots of youngs pieces / picks mean lots of options at the 2010 deadline- or this year during the draft or summer. Keep them, trade them – we needs options!

We’ve taken this last step, clearing out a lot of vets, gotta really go for it now.

Going for it will give the fans a lot to look forward to and should sell some more tickets.

If the Wiz really do want to trade it

Where better than to send it to one of the worst teams in the far West that they hardly ever see?

Wishful thinking maybe, but we do have that going for us.

Can you Imagine loading up on both Griffin AND Rubio?

or Rubio AND Thabeet?

or some other combination?

Why would the Wiz trade their pick?

They have no motivation to trade the pick. The Rookie deal caps out at maybe $5 Mill in 3 years from now. Less than a mid level for a player who should be great for them. As long as they do not Darko it up then they are fine.

It's because they are paying luxury tax next season

That’s really what Lttg is thinking. We shed them of their tax obligation, and we get their 1st rounder.

For example

Jason Thompson and a future #1 would save them $6 million next year (when you factor the luxury tax). Not saying they would do it. But if they were to do it, that’s why they’d do it.

Just thought of the best/worst argument for drafting Thabeet

Every time he does something good they can play The Go-Go’s

We’ve got Thabeet!
