Question of adding an instant star to Sacramento's roster on the example of Chris Bosh

The analysis of Raptors-Bulls game on RaptorsHQ brings some very good discussion on the future of Chris Bosh. His name has been involved here at StR in several discussions about potential future trades/free agency activities of the Kings so I thought to come up with a practical exercise.

Let me just summarize points given in the article (they begin at the second photo of the article - the one with Bosh dunking).

  • Bosh is most likely to be gone from Toronto by 2010. There are two possible reasons for this - either a) he wants to go; or b) he will ask for the maximum salary and Toronto will not give him this.
  • Generally, the new contract of Bosh might be a problem for the Raptors who might not feel comfortable to pay him the money he will probably ask. Therefore, the option to trade Bosh away (or to get rid of him with the maximum profit) is open.
  • It is open not the least because of the development of Bargnani and because he will have to ask for extension as well. At least as seen at HQ, Bargnani is already considered to be almost as good as Bosh with possibly a better future, while he seems to be the cheaper one for next few years (and generally the argument they give is that Toronto will afford to keep only one of the two, probably the cheaper one).

Now, let's think about three options. Would you trade for Bosh's expiring contract in the summer 2009 along with the possibility of him asking for the max contract just the year after (and possibley wanting to leave Sacramento? Let's expect that Toronto will insist on Kevin Martin to be included in the trade (also as because of the salary) and probably will also want to include at least one of their bad contracts (either Kapono or Banks). My question then is - would you be willing to trade a package around Kevin Martin for a package around Chris Bosh (with a long-term highly-paid contract)? If yes, what you would be willing to include/sacrify and what you would expect from the Raptors?

The second option - would you be aiming at Chris Bosh through free agency in 2010 presupposing he indeed will ask for a max or sub-max contract (due to the market-situation, he probably will if he leaves Toronto, unless there will be an option to join an instant contender)? Is he really worthy of that?

The third idea, following the first one - if Toronto signs Bosh to a max or sub-max contract, would you be willing to do the trade (within the same circumstances as in the first example, i.e. with Martin involved etc.)?

This is not just an imaginary situation as I want to point out something else related to the 2010 FA period. Bosh is generally considered to be a high-profile free agent who is also willing to leave his current team, while being well below the level of his fellows LBJ and D-Wade. By rethinking how and if at all it is possible to acquire him in the next two years, much can be said also about other potential high-profile free agents or soon-to-be-FAs in general. That means, the question is if the Kings might have a chance to get some of those and how much they would have to give up. Compared to Amare, Bosh is more probable to leave his current team - while Toronto will not want to let him go for free. Compared to, let's say, Boozer - Bosh seems to be a better player (at least this season) plus he has a better aura of reliability.

I am sorry as this analysis maybe is not as illustrating as I wanted it to be but the general point should have been - do Kings really have any chance to add a significant star to the roster other way than through drafts, if considering probable demands of such stars such as Bosh in 2010? The question frequently given at this site and frequently answered so probably no breaking answer is to arrive - and many of you might be also tired of the discussion, for which I apologize.

the draft...

will have a lot to do with whether the kings make a run at bosh. let’s say they get the number #1 pick, and GP actually does what most experts think will happen, that is pick Griffin, then essentially you won’t have a spot for Bosh, because you will have Griffin, Thompson and Hawes. i think GP wants to get a point guard at some point, unless Beno decides he wants to be a basketball player and not a typical Euro who played well in a contract year, got paid, and will now sit out anytime he has the sniffles.

if there is a way to draft a hall of fame-type coach, that is what this team needs. Kenny Natt is doing fine, but with this group of youngsters you almost need a guy with a ring or two, or at least the reputation of let’s say a Larry Brown, and come in here and command the respect.

it gets pretty tiring to hear the coaches say “we do the drills in practice and we tell the guys to..” and then watch the games and see them do the complete opposite. this team is an example of either a young team who just doesn’t get it or a team that has tuned out its coach. and that is where the coach’s respect comes in.

I agree that a lot depends on how the lottery balls fall

With (IF) Griffin, we’ll look for a stud PG or a stud SF, with PG being the preference.

I also have real questions as to whether Bosh is truly a franchise player worth the max

whether he is really enough of a game changer.

Yeah

My favorite time of year is the Pre-Draft Orlando workouts when we get a quality look at their actual heights.

As the argument goes, it doesn’t matter if they are 6’10" or 6’8", as long as they are good player, and are of the proper mold.

When someone says “legit” height, the measurement shouldn’t be nearly as misconstrued as it currently is. Regardless of a player’s perspective, or our perspective on what a “legit” height is, a indisputable fact is that Thabeet and Rubio are tall for their positions. Those kind of numbers provide me with a certain level of comfort that Griffin can’t match.

Levels of concern

Whatever he loses at the pre-draft camp, he’ll magically regain when he turns pro.

Show of hands – who thinks that Jason Thompson is his listed 6’11"? Who thinks that Griffin is shorter than David Lee, who is listed at 6’9" and is amongst the NBA leaders in rebounding?

On the other hand, check out this mouth-watering list of the last 10 foreign players drafted: Gallinari, Yi, Bargnani, Sene, Sefolosha, Vazquez, Korolev, Biedrins, Milicic, Pietrus.

Is the risk in the inch that Griffin may or may not have, or how Rubio’s game might translate to the NBA?

I have not yet made up my mind between these two, but can we please stop with this height nonsense? Should the Kings wind up with the pick that leads to selection of Griffin, I guarantee you that he will be introduced as 6’10" out of Oklahoma, and that he will be able to dunk on an NBA rim.

Hmm

First off, nicely done. This is an argument that has been brought up many times before, but you’re breakdown was thorough and clear.

Second, Bargnani is not an equivalent (or even close to an equivalent) to Bosh. That’s sounds like Toronto trying to talk itself into the inevitable departure of their star player.

Third, there’s no way in hell you ship off Martin’s reasonable contract for a rent-a-player. This team is not that close to a championship, and you’d be sabotaging the future for a slim chance at re-signing Bosh.

Honestly, I think Bosh is a lost cause. I see him partnering with LeBron or Wade if he can. If he can’t, he’ll join the highest bidder. I like his game, but I’d hate to see the Kings in a bidding war for him and paying the “tax” it takes to make a FA overcome a perception of Sacramento. No thanks.

I'd immediately trade

Martin, Beno, Thomas, and two second round picks for a sign-and-trade the Olympian Chris Bosh and Jason Kapono.

I hold Chris Bosh in very high regard. He can score almost anywhere, he can rebound, pass well, and he’s much better defensively than before; definitely a top 15 player, in my opinion top 10, and when there is a chance to get him you do it. Of course, this will never happen because Bosh won’t want to come to Sacramento, but I can dream.

As for the Bargnani thing, he’s been playing better without Sam Mitchell (who I think is an vastly overrated coach) but he really can’t do much besides shoot the ball. He’s not a very good rebounder and his defense… it leaves a lot to be desired.

Nice post kffce

A couple of things:

1. First, while I have a lot of respect for Bosch and would love to see him in a King’s uni I don’t think he’s worth the cost you referred to above ie, Kevin Martin and ultimately I don’t think he’s a franchise player. Look at what DWade did for Miami this year as opposed to what Bosch did for the Raps. Ultimately, Dwade is a franchise player and Bosch is not. At best he is worth he is a sub max contract and the team that is able to pay him the most will be Toronto. From what I have read the reason that Toronto is considering shopping him is that they don’t think he will stay past 2010 not because Bargiani game has improved.

2. There is no doubt we would be a better team with Bosch on the team but consider the cost. We still don’t know what we have with JT and Spence and if we are able to draft either Griffin and Rubio this June, then as stated above we won’t have a need for Chris Bosch.

3. Bosch (and Boozer and Amare) are in a difficult position. Two years ago they and their agents were probably planning on opting out and seeking as close to a max contract as possible and likely planning on having multiple teams competing for their services. Now in the new economic reality I would not at all be surprised to see Boozer and Bosch resign with the current teams, possibly signing extensions this summer. The only unknown is the Knicks where if they can’t bring LBJ to town may make a play for both DWade and Chris Bosch, (at least that’s what I’ve read).

If we drafted Rubio instead of Griffin,

I’d trade Martin for Bosh in a heart beat. Shooters and SG’s are the easiest positions to fill. Sure, Martin can score but so can Bosh. If Cisco can play PG, he should be able to take over the SG spot.

Now, the salary is a separate issue. I have to agree with some of the previous comments, that Bosh isn’t worth a Max deal, and the deal would have to be a sign & trade to guarantee that he didn’t walk.

by HighTops on Mar 31, 2009 12:46 AM PDT reply actions

Bosh

All this talk about Bosh (doesn’t Bosch make auto parts, or something?) not being worthy of a max deal is utter nonsense.

Look, Amare will probably get a max deal, and Bosh is better than Amare (statistically, injury-wise, and team-wise…ask the other Olympians). And, I KNOW that Bosh has more of an impact on games than Rashard Lewis, who got a max deal a few years back. Bosh will get (and deserves to get) paid a max deal. I’d welcome Bosh with open arms.

If (and big if) we somehow got lucky enough to draft Griffin, we’d almost certainly have to include Shock or Hawes in a deal w/ TOR to get Bosh, though. Ouch, baby. Very ouch. But, unless you’re Memphis, you’re not in the business of giving away star-quality big men. Last time I checked, Memphis is not located in Canada.

I’d say do what it takes to get Bosh in a Kings uni, but I hate to think about the ultimate cost.

Theres a reason Bosh is not worth a Max Contract to this Franchise

He doesn’t put you over the top. I can understand that somewhere he may be the guy that puts you over the top, and he is worth mortgaging the future in terms of cap space and potential free agents. That somewhere is 100% not sacremento.

If you are the Maloofs or Petrie, you don’t give up a top 25 player like Martin who is so efficient both in terms of scoring and also more importantly for Sacremento in this current climate, in terms of contract numbers, for the great unknown that is Chris Bosh.

NBA fans really need to get their head around the economic climate. There will be less and less competition for Bosh’s signature.

Case in point, the nets were trying to offload Vince Carter an EXTREMELY productive player this year for next to nothing at the deadline and could find no one across the entire landscape to take on payroll.

The kings have already drafted two bigs to develop into a front court rotation. They have committed to the course, you only need to see the playing time Thompson is getting as a rookie.

It is not like the kings are sitting on the edge of the conference finals looking for that third member of a big 3 to take us to the promised land.

The kings are on the brink of a bottom of the league finish. You get Bosh and give him 20 million a year, your going to be going into luxury tax to keep him, and put a competitive team around him. Unless you commit to a big big spend, and bring in a lot of talent to support him (and there is no real body of evidence to suggest he can perform well enough to carry an entire franchise) you are doing it all for a record that is going to be mildly improved (warning evidence not empirical, mostly annecdotal! lol).

I didn’t notice Toronto smashing the competition this year. Do you really think Sacremento has a more talented squad to put behind Bosh than the raptors have at present? They have a great PG in calderon and some very decent second level talent in Bargnani. Not to mention a few solid vets and some very similar warm bodies on the bench.

You give up the money in my opinion, for a guy like Dwayne Wade who has dragged Miami kicking and screaming through the poop of mediocrity and into a decent seeded Eastern conference playoff proposition. Has carried a team to the alter at the highest level and wed them to a championship.

You give it up for LBJ and his near triple double worth of manchild. I mean obviously he is the star at the top of the Christmas tree.

Chris Bosh is a third place prize. Certainly a very very impressive machine of justice, but not one you bet the house on.

All you sign yourself up to with Bosh as your main man is a lot less room to move under the cap. Sure Petrie could get it together and swing something massive, or use him as a trade chip with NY or some other cashcow, so I don’t rule it out completely.

I’d much rather see Rubio drafted to Sactown, because he could improve everyones game particularly a guy like Thompson who as Ziller noted earlier this week thrives when given the ball in a position where he can finish strong at the hoop.

How much fun would it be to watch this team with Martin able to create superbly on his own, and Rubio feeding everyone else.

Nicely done counterpoint

and I agree on most of it (Rubio not my personal preference but I certainly get it). I happen to think the time to get a young big three is now, for next year and the future. As I’ve said, I don’t think Bosh is the right choice for us – even if he’d come.

Question though: Are you from here? Its spelled Sacramento.

i Say

Give them JT, The Number 1 this year and Cisco, that’s 2 starters and a bench player Because Haws, Bosh, Greene, Martin and beno…..that’s a force. I’d rather give up Haws than JT but i don’t think they would take Haws over JT (if they had a choice and they do) IDK if i am willing to part with K-Mart because K-Mart + Bosh = Pwnage

Waaaay too much!

Two starters and your 6th man? For a guy they’re going to lose anyway? No way Jose.

But

Bosh would never come to sac-town, even if we could offer 100 million, no star would. The only legit player we have is K-Mart, K-Mart isn’t going to attract Bosh or Wade or LBJ, but Bosh and a K-Mart might.

JT, (potentially) Griffin/Rubio, & Cisco...

…for Bosh? Even I’m not that big of a fan, and I’m a pretty big fan.

I’d do that deal for LBJ or Wade, but not Bosh.

Oh, and it’s spelled “Haw-E-s”

oh

Thanks sorry HAWES, Bosh and K-Mart will reck shop! Esp. if K-mart takes only 12 shots to score 20 pts. But JT, Hawes, Greene, K-mart, Rubio, I don’t think that would be as strong. But what do i know? I’m just sitting here on my couch waiting for the Kings to be good again…i have a feeling it might take awhile.

there is something to be said

about making a move for the sake of making a move. seeing that i am a giants fan, i have to live with barry zito for the next several years. signing bosh would be the same thing. is he a nice player? yes. would he help this team? yes. would he bring a title? no. a team is going to bring a title and if you max out your cap space on a “nice” player and not a superstar, then you won’t have money to extend hawes and thompson when their contracts are up.

i am not sure what his annual salary would be, but let’s figure it would be in the $12mil/year range, it is probably more, but let’s just say that is the figure. then you are going to have over 1/3 of your salary cap space locked up between bosh and martin. can those two bring a championship to this city? i highly doubt it. plus you run the risk of not being able to re-sign hawes and/or JT. too much of a risk for a “nice” player.

Let’s expect that Toronto will insist on Kevin Martin to be included in the trade

I can’t imagine that that would be the case. If I were Toronto, I’d ask for a young big and a pick, maybe a back-up wing as filler if I wanted to get the deal done. More flexibility (cap space tied up in several players instead of one massive contract) and more potential, not to mention increased likelihood that GP will answer the phone.

Coming to you live from the land of interim coaches.
