The Maloofs are flying commercial. That's right, the Kings' co-owners are done with the pricey, private jets and are bouncing in and out of airports with the rest of us when traveling from Sacramento to Los Angeles to Las Vegas and wherever else their endeavors take them. And from what I'm told, their airline of choice is Southwest. ... What's more, the Maloofs have yet to make any layoffs in these tough economic times. That's more than most struggling companies can say.

Whatever....

It is very tough to get behind a team that won’t build a new arena. Maloof’s build a friggin arena already. I could care less you have to fly first class. Or, does the Las Vegas Kings have a better ring to it?

by monkeyklawz on Mar 5, 2009 11:53 AM PST reply actions

They have lots of money

but their casino is not getting gambled in, their arena is not getting filled, the economy is terrible and the cost of construction materials has not dropped. They are not losing their houses or jobs, but the Maloofs probably do not have $500 million in liquidity ot build a new arena.

This is possibly:
A. A telling sign of how bad their current financial state.
B. Cloaking themselves in pauper’s clothes.
C. or just being ULTRA-CHEAP and saving every cent they can.

It may be all of the above.

Classy

I think it says alot about the Maloofs that they are willing to fly commercial instead of laying anyone off. I bet 95% of CEO’s would make the other choice.

Co-sign

… until you get to the last sentence. I fit one describing word of your final sentence (it’s not “retard” or “David Jones”) and I don’t think I’ve ever criticized the Maloofs’ money. (I’ve only criticized the handling of the Theus hiring, the anti-Adelman crap they pulled, and the halftime show QVC garbage.)

You can have a progressive/liberal philosophy and appreciate the efforts the Maloofs are making to tighten up. I do. Hell, I posted the damn blockquote.

and that’s why I made certain to write “hard left,” who I do firmly believe oppose capitalists generally and whose antipathy toward the business class they make very apparent. I believe that David Jones is at least very close to falling into that camp – although most elected officials who are in that camp are very careful to watch their rhetoric. You can sometimes act like a socialist, but it still ain’t cool to call yourself one or to be too conspicuous in your public acts.

There has been a few times when the Maloofs have “helped” make basketball decisions that I believe hurt the franchise. #1- Not resigning Jimmy Jackson when he might have been the difference maker the following season. #2- The Ron Artest debacle. #3- The late night flight to Arkansas to chat/re-sign Corliss Williamson (good financial move but Corliss is too good of a man to get played like that.).

I don’t like the glitz and glimmer Las Vegas style entertainment that they originally brought with them, replacing fun, family friendly acts like dog races, but that is just a personal preference. I don’t like the music act screaming at the beginning of every game, lord knows we all understand that we are in hell and we don’t need a B act telling us so. But…I love watching these guys go crazy on the sidelines. I love walking into a local restaurant and seeing these guys sitting at a regular table. I love that they are near the salary cap threshold every year even if it required a bunch of shitty moves to get there, at least they are trying. I think they are genuine dudes who want to put a great product on the floor.

Well said TZ

I’m with you on that one. Cuz Kusian, and I agree with much of what you say, until you mention Dave Jones.

My question is simple: Why mention Jones in the first place? And, I think it’s commendable the Kings haven’t layed anybody off, and that the Maloof’s are thinking about how they spend money. That’s a good thing. (It’s about time the wealthy feel what the rest of us have to go through. I personally don’t think this depression is terrible for the working poor. Working poor do whatever they can to survive regardless of the time. It’s the affluent such as the Maloof’s who have to change their lifestyle. Not a bad thing if you ask me.)

Your question

I referenced David Jones because he is the ultimate faux populist; and he clearly uses the Maloofs and the Kings as political footballs. And I think that much of the antipathy displayed for the Maloofs is based on the made-up, phony rage that his ilk like to display – their almost knee-jerk negative reactions to busines and “the rich” generally. There is no need to repeat what I wrote above; so, I’ll leave it at that.

The bottom line is this: most “rich” people are that way because they are smart and work very, very hard. Our economic system, generally, rewards very smart, very entrepreneurial, and very hard-working people. It also provides plenty of jobs and wealth for the less ambituous and the less talented, thanks in large part to bureaucracies (public and private) and unions. Even our “poor” fair very, very well by global standards. I believe that most of us sit where we do on the ecomomic totem pole based largely, though not totally, on our own efforts. I say this as the son of a mother with an 8th grade education and a father who is a tradesman.

And, for the record, Pookey, we are not in depression. We are not in a depression by any formal economic definition or by any historical parallel. The Great Depression saw unemployment rates of 20 – 30% for a decade. (How FDR and his pathetic New Deal have ever been credited for getting us beyond the Great Depression is beyond me.) We are not close to that sort of economic devastation now. Hell, we had many, many more bank closing during the S&L crisis of the 80’s than we will ever see now. However, we now live in a 24 hour news cycle that promotes every bit of bad economic data and rarely highlights good news (even though there is very little these days.)

While I by no means feel sorry for the Maloofs, who, BTW, inherited their wealth, I don’t begrudge them their status or the empire that they have helped build.

Watch the broad strokes of political crap talk

One of the problems with politics has been this painting everyone from a particular party with all the motives and faults of the worst most intolerant members. Thats Left or Right. I agree with what you said about the Maloofs and I also think Dave Jones, my State Senator – is in fact a dick who has played ‘political football’ with the kings arena issue. I’ve voted for him several times as there hasn’t been a real option.

Looking forward to one.

Except for the last sentence. I am a commie pinko retard hard-left liberal and I think Dave Jones has consistently been a major asshole when it comes to the Kings.

So the fact that I and a bunch of other “hard-left retards” actually agree with you on most of this maybe means you shouldn’t lump us all together. If I can offer a modest retort, your anger seems to reflect many of the prominent right wingers in the media and is, in my opinion, largely misplaced.

So much hate

I agree with the first 95% of your post, but I dont see why you are so angry about it. In my years on this site, I dont remember anyone every hating the Maloofs for being wealthy. People may disagree with their hiring/firing practices, or not want to assist in building a stadium. But I sure dont remember anyone claiming they are a family of theives.

I agree that they have brought SO much to the franchise. There is no way that the Kings would be better off without the Maloof’s owning them. At least you cant convince me of that fact.

Lastly, regarding your last sentance and new avatar. To each their own. I dont see how hateful speech and shooting someone in the head is in any way productive.

Look at the pic again. You didn’t describe it correctly. It’s somebody being held at gunpoint and being forced to give their money to the person holding them at gunpoint. It doesn’t describe somebody being shot in the head. If it did, it wouldn’t be my avatar. BTW, avatar is an odd word.

With all due respect to your political opinion Kus (cuz we don't quite agree on a lot of things-which is not a problem--probably a good thing)

Is that your Avatar is describing how Socialism holds our minds hostage. Or, put another way, how Socialism forces us to make a bad decision under aggrieved circumstances.

What I would like to say, is that you mention what the symbol is, but frankly, and I don’t wish to argue about it, cuz it’s an avatar, and it’s not like mine is worldly (I think we all can agree mine is sexier), is that your Avatar is a metaphor for one reason (at least) you don’t like Socialism. Taking the money with the gun to a head is not really what your Avatar is saying.

I think the proper term would be "icon" rather than "avatar"

An avatar is an “”http://www.thefreedictionary.com/avatar" >embodiment" of something whereas an icon is a “”http://www.thefreedictionary.com/icon" >representation" of something. I don’t think Pookey’s picture is an embodiment of him although he perhaps might wish it to be. ;-)

I have seen a ton of comments referring to the Maloofs weath in a negative way on this site. And I just think a lot of it is class envy, which I despise. Hey, I’m not a big fan of the Maloof’s recent basketball decisions and, hell, we don’t even share the same politics. But, I believe that they are good owners that are showing amazing loyalty in tough economic times.

by Kusian on Mar 5, 2009 1:13 PM PST up reply actions

And I just think a lot of it is class envy, which I despise.

To provide a personal counterpoint, I have a few close family members who have very large bank accounts and are convinced that every poor person is lazy, dishonest, gaming the system, committing fraud and generally trying to steal crumbs from their table of riches. I love these people, but their attitude f-ing sucks. I suppose my point is that this cuts both ways.

Back on topic, I think the Maloofs are generally good guys who don’t get enough credit for what they do.

My wife flew on a Southwest Airlines flight with Gavin a few months back.

They were standing in line waiting to board when the Zack Randolph trade went down and I had her break the news to him. I told her that he was traded for Mobley and Tim Thomas- she mistakenly said Kenny Thomas, I quickly corrected her and told her to tell Gavin that it was Tim and not Kenny…but that I bet he wished it was Kenny. She relayed the message and got a good laugh out of him before he jumped on the phone to call his people.

Could you take the political discussions elsewhere?

There are about a million different political blogs. I come to this blog to discuss my love of the Kings. There is a fine line between discussing how politics might influence the success/failure of the Arena deal, and lashing out at those of differing political beliefs.

Kusian attacking others’ beliefs has nothing to do with what was posted in the fanshot. It goes both ways too, since I didn’t really feel comfortable with some of the articles that were posted around election time. I am just sick of seeing posters like Smills and others on the various Kings message boards bringing politics into the realm of fandom. We are all fans, it doesn’t matter one bit what political beliefs we hold. It has no place in these discussions.

This isn’t my blog obviously, and I don’t make the rules. Just a suggestion.

Point taken

After another day of economic beat down, it’s nice to turn to sports for a little diversion.

On the other hand, you could pass over whatever doesn’t interest you here.

Like it or not, politics may play a role when the talk turns toward the economic status of the Maloof’s, their franchise, and/or new arena conversations. Nature of the beast. That said, it would be nice if these things had no influence, and as a result no place here.

And please don’t take offense to this, but I’d take this a bit more seriously from someone who has more than 15 comments and three months on the site.

I think once you’ve built up a community over time, digressions from the topic at hand and completely off-topic posts are to be expected. TZ and Co. have always cracked down on things when they get “out of control”. This discussion has been pretty civil, and I think it addresses a topic of importance to the future of this franchise.

My advice would be to ignore content you aren’t interested in. Just a suggestion.
