I think Thompson is going to be one of the most improved players from this class at this time next year.

Methinks

David Thorpe really wants to be in the Jason Thompson business.

Took the words out of my mouth

I have a theory on this though. Kevin Martin, Luol Deng, and Udonis Haslem all work out with Thorpe. Those guys have all been clients of Jason Levien, our new Assistant GM. I wouldn’t not be surprised if Levien pushed for a lot of our guys to train with him this summer.

My thoughts exactly

I think his originally comment was “I think Thompson is going to be one of the most improved players from this class at this time next year, if he works out with me this summer.” ESPN might have edited that last part out, though.

Maybe I'm alone in this

I find it impressive JT is a guy he wants to work with.

Thorpe would do a ton for JT's game

Under normal circumstances Udonis Haslem would not be such a serviceable PF. He’s essentially a rich man’s Kenny Thomas. But with Thorpe’s help he’s done way better than you’d ever expect. If Thorpe trained JT I think those Webber/Malone comparisons might be feasible.

Agreed

I think the reason that Thorpe seems so interested in taking on JT is that so many of JT’s problems are things that can be fixed with coaching. JT has most of the things that are hard or impossible to teach a big: hands, heart, mobility. The things that he needs to work on are mostly technical and mental: footwork, staying out of foul trouble, staying in control, etc.

Obviously NBA head coaches (especially ones that coach teams with as few quality vets as the Kings) are focusing more on schemes, gameplans, and other things to teach the whole team, rather than addressing each individual player’s deficiencies.

It also seems logical to me that Thompson wouldn’t have gotten much quality individual coaching in college. I’m only guessing and maybe the StRer who came from Rider with Thompson can refute this (Beagle?), but you have to assume that his college coach wasn’t on the level of the big time DI coaches that many NBA players get (Coach K, Lute Olson, etc.) And on top of that, Thompson was the best player in the conference, so his coaches would’ve had much bigger problems to address with their other players than JTs tendency to get in foul trouble. And his competition wouldn’t have been as good, so his problems wouldn’t have been exposed.

So yeah, I’d be effing psyched if JT signed up with Thorpe, even though I really have no idea what he does.

Well said

It’s always nice when the shortcomings are things that can be taught. Certain things are cut and dry, you’ve got it or you don’t, you have the fire and drive (JT) or you don’t (K9).

Also an excellent point about JT being the best player in his conference. Easy thing to forget.

If I remember right, JT went to some Big Man's camp after the draft

In fact, he may have been going to camp for a long time.

I'm sure

You don’t get to be a lottery pick without excellent training. But I certainly see room for improvement in many areas that can be chalked up to a lack of discipline, rather than a lack of ability or even intelligence. Which makes me think that more individual coaching will do him well.

What would be nice

If the Kings had the rich man’s Kenny Thomas, in Kenny Thomas. You know, since they already have him and everything?
