Early Tests Positive For Spencer Hawes

Ailene Voisin reports from Denver:

Hawes, who has a history with the left knee, having undergone microfracture surgery as a young teen and an arthroscopy in October 2007 to repair a meniscus tear, was slammed by Denver's Kenyon Martin as he prepared to throw down a dunk with 5:43 remaining in the first quarter. He is scheduled to return home for an MRI and further testing today by team physicians.

If his mood in the locker room afterward is any indication, however, the Kings might indeed have caught a break. He was smiling, nodding, occasionally laughing.

"Initially, I thought it was worse than it was," Hawes said after the loss before an announced crowd of 15,823 at the Pepsi Center. "It swelled up a little bit at first. … It was scary for a few minutes. But the Nuggets' doctor (Steve Traina) did the tests and said the structural stuff looked good. (The MRI is) more precautionary than anything. I think I'm lucky considering how I felt and how it looked."

Obviously, this has become the most important story of the week. Apologies to Ike Diogu.

No apology needed to Ike

I had a feeling it wasn’t so bad afer reading the game recap on ESPN. Yeah, so Ike Diogu starts on Wednesday. And how would that be any different for this team than it has been for the first 81 games? What Martin did was dumb; but he did so trying to stop a layup. I’m just glad the Kings dodged a bullet (most likely) with this. If they haven’t completely dodged it, they have time for Spencer to rest.

Disagree

I guess Martin was trying to stop a layup, but it’s not like he was contesting it. Spencer was at full speed and extension in the air, and Martin simply shoved him. It’s the most dangerous way to foul someone in basketball, and it’s always called a flagrant so it doesn’t even save points. It’s completely careless at best and malicious at worst.

I always knew Kenyon Martin was an idiot, now I know he’s a jerk too.

by furious.d on Apr 14, 2009 7:20 AM PDT up reply actions

I guess I gotta disagree with you

I don’t think even Hawes thought Martin was tryin to hurt him. Jeremy of Roundball Mining Company said the same thing in his own recap when Hawes slapped Martin on the butt. We’re just sensitive to this because Hawes’ knees are a sensitive issue with him, and because Hawes is an important part of this team, then well we don’t like it. But I would have been just as bothered if it happened to JT.

That being said, I’ve seen Hawes take bad spills and get up after them. I think some of this is just simply precaution.

And, for what it’s worth, I’m not going to excuse Martin for what he did.

Hawes's history definitely contributes to my frustration

And I don’t think he was trying to hurt Hawes. But it also wasn’t a freak accident or a basketball play. He wasn’t protecting the rim. I know these things happen fast, but Kenyon Martin made the split-second decision to shove Hawes instead of letting him get the dunk. In my opinion it was stupid and careless.

by furious.d on Apr 14, 2009 7:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Well we agree it was stupid & careless

But intention to harm someone else is a different thing altogether.

Hope Hawes is okay real soon, but “Apologies to Ike Diogu, but this is the story of the week?” How lame can you get? What game did you watch? It is wrong, wrong, wrong, that it is so hard for you, the two main guys of this site, to see anything positive about last night, and Diogu’s last three games. He is getting more “props” from Denver and Portland sites. Are you just so beat down? Diogu wasn’t supposed to be “the one” to get 32, but he did- he worked his butt off. Sorry for you, if that effort and enthusiasm wasn’t worthy enough. I loved every minute of it. Adversity can and will drop you, but it is how you get up again that makes all the difference. It is “two” late to try and say anything positive now- just be content and wrong.

Lame

Diogu is nothing more than a journeyman player, who’s already made the rounds of the NBA in his young career. The guy has been a severe underachiever to this point.

Hawes is a potential key piece for this franchise down the road. I think the health of his knee is much more important than a “breakout” game for Diogu in the next to last game for a 16 win team.

by otis29 on Apr 14, 2009 7:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Here's something else that one might want to keep in mind

The Clippers in 99-00 finished 15-67. The Bulls finished 15-67 in 00-01. (Those same teams had 17 wins the other had 15 too. The Nuggets also had 17 wins in 2002-03.) The Atlanta Hawks lost a whopping 13 games in the 04-05 season. So we’re talking about one of the worst 10 teams record wise in this past decade, and that Hawks team might be the 2nd or 3rd worst of all time. MIami also lost 15 games last year, but we all know why that happened.

Or the Hawks won a whopping 13 games that year

This is only Diogu's 4th year in the league, he's only averaged 12 minutes a game in 186 games

and he’s played well in the last 3 games. He played well last night, he was dominant, he played Nene tough, his foot work near the hoop was excellent and he showed why dubs picked him 9th in the lottery. His best game for the Kings was better than Spence’s best game for the King’s so far. The way he started last night was impressive and early signs were that maybe he was on his way to his best game before he got hurt. But as you say it was the second to last game for a 16 win team.

Does this make Spence expendable? No, all it means is that Diogu’s got game and if we could renounce him and still manage to resign him to a reasonable contract it’s something to think about.

This isn’t the last time in Spence’s career that he is going to have knee problems. He’s still 20, just about to turn 21 and he’s already had 5 surgeries including a microfracture surgery. All anybody is saying is that Ike had a heck of a game last night and it’s “possible” that if the price is right and we don’t draft Griffin he might be a good addition to the frontcourt.

4th year in the league

And 5th team right? And this guy who clearly has a ton of talent can’t get off the bench for one of the worst teams in the league until just recently?

I agree with a lot of what you wrote and don’t mind having a solid backup plan in case Spencer’s knees betray him at some point, but I don’t know that Diogu is the answer. The guy certainly is skilled, but there’s a reason he can’t stick anywhere – my guess is there’s a “knucklehead” quotient here we aren’t fully aware of.

I’d love to be proven wrong though.

by otis29 on Apr 14, 2009 7:23 PM PDT up reply actions

This is nonsense, mi714

The Kings have clinched the worst record in the League. The amount of points that one player scores in a single, meaningless loss will never be as important as another player’s long term health.

I guarantee that if you asked Ike Diogu right now what’s more important between his scoring a career high and Spencer’s health, he’d be smart enough to answer correctly.

Nobody’s taking away from Ike’s great performance of late. And we all want him to succeed. In fact, if you took a deep breath after reading the post, you might’ve noticed that TZ was going out of his way to mention Ike in a completely un-Ike-related story.

But if you still think that Ike’s night is more important than Hawes’s health, you should find yourself a Diogu message board. Because this is a Kings message board, and you’re obviously not a Kings fan.

by furious.d on Apr 14, 2009 7:37 AM PDT up reply actions

I enjoyed Ike, too

But the knee injury to our 20-year-old starting center is more important to the Kings. Ike likely has one game left. If we’re lucky, Hawes has 1,000 Kings games left.

I thought we only had eight players

under contract next year, so we could see Diogu come back to Sacramento. Doubtful though, I bet and hope that he AND McCants get a chance to play and exhibit their talents in the league whether it be Sacramento or not. Most basketball players are capable of playing well some of the time it is doing what Ike did on a consistent basis that makes a player great not a great game here and there. Fact is, if he can Rebound, Score and play decent positional defense then he has a place in this league. If not he probably will still get a contract this summer because he is a big-body.

re- wrote Diogu off

1. Pick a story that should have been mentioned more than just as a tag to another story. 2. Point out to the editor he was wrong not to write about it other than a “lame” reference to it. 3. Mention the word ‘master" and that someone will get “mad” if you disagree with them. Sit back and wait.
Observations:
Ziller- thought as editor you would attempt diplomacy, but you jumped right in. That surprised us.
Pookey reacted as predicted, but he comes with a warning label.
214- give you credit for the DeNiro- like handling of the vagueness.
Expected cursing, but predicted the group beat-down and the tactic of don’t attack the arguement, attack the man/men.
Got a predictable responses from the usual suspects.
Did not think so many would look up mi714.
Never expected someone would think it was Diogu.
Did expect more would have spoken up for Ike, but there were a couple.
Did expect to be corrected- he had 11 rebounds, not ten.
Was surprised by the guy who said this was a place for people of different backgrounds to have a discussion, and then called our viewpoint stupid.

What did we learn- On any given day, Ziller, you are better than that. We chose to read your work because the we wanted to know what was going on with this team in a way that isn’t being served by the “Bee” or the team’s website. We still think you, in your position as co-editor have a different level of responsibility. True, you are not responsible for most of the riff-raff, but this is your forum and you set the tone, and how low it goes. We still think you or 214 should have mentioned Diogu when he scored 13,8, and 32 -at least for his effort. We will continue to think of him as a King’s player as long as he wears the uniform, on the bench or otherwise. We will continue to consider ourselves King’s fans even though we are not true enough, or haven’t been around long to suit some.

I , myself, won nothing out of this experience. Others just bought beer. Sorry to Ike Diogu, if he gets judged by what we wrote. He didn’t pick us, either. Will we ever post again? Maybe, not.

Diogu would have interested me down the stretch

as an alternative to the dreaded and ineffective “small ball.” On the other hand, any minutes for Ike would have been minutes taken from Donté. As Ike is not the future, I’m not sure that would have set well with me.

I get that

But I think its Noce that has been taking Donte’s minutes – and I’m not convinced yet that Donte’ is the future. We need options man.

and at the right price…..(?)

Jason Thompson played 40 mins

Had a +/- of 6. Diogu had a +/ of -25 in 41 mins. Diogu can score, and board yeah, but does it mean anythin? Boxscore

No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. Simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get all tangled up, you just tango on.....
