Enter John Wall

As mayfieldcol posted in the FanShots, ESPN's Chad Ford is reporting that John Wall might be eligible for the 2009 draft as a fifth-year high school senior. My assessment of the eligibility rules can be found at FanHouse. Two writers we all know and respect -- Shoals from FreeDarko and Ben Golliver from Blazers Edge -- attended the Nike Hoops Summit over the weekend in Portland, and had stellar reviews of Wall.

Wall is No. 1 on DraftExpress' 2010 mock, and he's considered the top prospect in this high school class ... if he's even in this high school class. If he's ruled eligible and he decides to skip his one-and-done year, he makes the inevitable draft debates all the more interesting. You can see why below.

That highlight real is somewhat distorted

in the sense that everything I have heard about him is about his court vision. That shows is blocks and dunks almost exclusively. Wall compares to Gary Payton with his size, physicality and energy. If he comes out and is eligible then I think there are 3 picks I would be happy taking.

I'd like to point out

That Ricky Rubio was #1 until he was bumped into the 2009 mock. But that doesn’t make Wall’s talent any less enticing or anything else.

I agree Pook

and I would probably take Griffin and Rubio over Wall. Wall declaring just makes it so that if we get pick #3 then we can take someone that is a consensus good talent unlike Harden, Thabeet (no offense Lttg), or Monroe.

by mayfieldcol on Apr 14, 2009 1:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Depends on which mock you look at...

some 2010 mocks had Wall in front of Rubio. Not to mention I’d never base my opinions on where a mock draft has a player ranked.

To be honest, I haven’t been as excited about a high school player as I am about Wall since Rose. I knew Rose was going to be legit. IMO, I think Wall can be better than Rose. Rose is great in almost every way, but I think Wall is slightly even more athletic/emphatic.

Personally, I’d take Wall over both Griffin & Rubio. He is THAT good.

by SacKings4Life on Apr 14, 2009 2:46 PM PDT reply actions

There is a need for a league ruling I believe

1st(from the salary cap FAQ:

A player who is eligible for a draft must be at least 19 during the calendar year of that draft, and if a U.S. player, at least one year removed from high school.

Wall turns 19 on 9/6.

I believe the gray area comes from him being a 5th year H.S. senior, or age wise similar to this year’s crop of College freshmen.

You should read this link that TZ posted in the original article analyzing the eligibility.

And the ensuing rule of this is

That the NBA will make the rule of: must be 2 years graduated from HS to enter the NBA draft. Of course, there will be the player in Wall’s situation where he goes to college one year, and does that rule apply and what not? There are always gray area’s that need to be addressed. This is going to get interesting.

Yes

I do think it is about hype but not necessarily about any individual player. I think the NBA tries to create a public image that the league isn’t all about business. Think NBA Cares commercial, David Stern in a stuffy gray suit, standing in front of an urban playground with five year old boys and girls playing playing on a basketball court, tossing the ball back and forth giggling and joyous, completely oblivious to the fact that they are supposed to try to throw the basketball through the hoop.

I agree with you that it's a maturity issue

But there isn’t mass outrage about white players who have the same problems black players have. The NBA is trying to cut through some of that by having those kids perceived in a different light.

The question is when did he graduate

Did he have enough credits to graduate after his 4th yr? If he could have graduated in 4 yrs with his class but chose to stay a 5th yr in school then he’s eligible. If he needed to stay a 5th yr to get enough credits to graduate, he’s not.

The problem is that the CBA has a provision

for H.S. players that don’t graduate, and since Wall went back for a 5th year. He could’ve not gone back and been eligible. So, your stance would in effect be penalizing him for continuing his education.

Here's the actual text of the CBA

from Chad Ford’s article:

“The player is or will be at least 19 years of age during the calendar year in which the Draft is held, and with respect to a player who is not an international player, at least one NBA Season has elapsed since the player’s graduation from high school (or, if the player did not graduate from high school, since the graduation of the class with which the player would have graduated had he graduated from high school)” — Article X, Section 1(b)(i).

Bold is mine. So, his class graduated last in ’08 right? Not pretty clear.

It's easy to determine which year his class graduated.

And it is already known (2008). Thus, that is not where the ambiguity lays. To me, the problem is with the word “or” and its following alternative phrase.

The alternative phrase would definitely make Wall eligible for this year’s draft if he had not graduated high school or will not graduate this year. If he graduates this year, it allows Stern the wiggle room to declare that Wall (despite being a fifth year senior) is not one NBA season removed from high school graduation.

I’d argue that Wall should be eligible based solely on the fact that declaring otherwise would ultimately be penalizing Wall for continuing his studies as a fifth year senior. However, this is not a court of equity (or even a court of law)…it’s the court of David Stern.

The more I read it, the less likely I think it is Wall will be allowed to be eligible. Not because of fairness, or reason, or logic, but because there’s wiggle room and we’re talking about David “I’m Runnin’ this Bitch and You’re Not” Stern.

I hate making this point twice in the same thread with the thought of imagining Megan Fox naked instead

But, the NBA doesn’t want John Wall anywhere near the NBA this year. They want him in the NBA, at the earliest, next year. They want him to use his potential to raise his stock to the point where staying in the NCAA is pointless. This kid, if he fails to develop, will be just another black kid overwhelmed by the NBA pressure and all that. Fair or not, that’s the perception the NBA, I think, internally has for a lot of these kids.

I can’t overstate how important it is that Brandon Jennings went overseas this year. One of the things alot of NBA teams were looking for was maturity, and if any think they’ve found it, than, well, you get the picture. Jennings is immensely talented like Wall and Rubio are.

Keep this in mind though Pook

a lot of players to come straight out of high school have been very successful. Of the last several players to come straight from high school only a few haven’t been all that great:

Kwame Brown – the one high school draftee who really should have played college ball
Shaun Livingston – he was talented enough but got hurt badly
Eddy Curry – talented but he’s fat and doesn’t put the effort forth. Definitely a maturity issue

There are a lot of arguments for kids going to college before coming over (and now going to Europe). Some people say a high school senior just isn’t mature enough. But when it comes down to it you’re either mature or you’re not. Yes they may be young and do silly things (Donte Greene) but the truly immature ones will never grow up (Curry, Zach Randolph, etc). There is the NBA pressure, but some of that same pressure will be felt overseas as well plus there’s the language barrier. Plus, playing time overseas will be just as, if not more, sporadic than in the NBA as a rookie. There’s also a huge learning curve with the talent but a truly great player will over come that.

My personal opinion is that it might help him to go overseas or go to college, but it wouldn’t hurt him that much to come straight to the pros. And keep in mind, it’s only a year. This is why the “one and done” is silly. It’s just a formality for some of these kids. Whose to say that Derrick Rose wouldn’t be as good as he is now if he had skipped college and went pro?

Always 2 ways to look at any of these issue's

For the NBA, it’s always about the marketing. They don’t want these kids to appear as thugs, or as whatever works as the most negative image for young black men. That’s what happens when you’re marketing a predominantly black league to a predominantly white audience.

And, now that I’ve completed that nice little hat trick of complete stupidity, I’m going to go away.

But that'll happen regardless

Stupid people stay stupid. The money and fame just allows them to do it on a larger scale. Really its more of an American problem than an NBA or even a pro sports problem. We’ll always pay way more attention to a black athlete acting like an idiot than one who doesn’t. It’s happened time and time again. But, there’s an interesting trend that’s emerged if you’ve noticed. Some of these younger players are way more mature for their age than you’d expect. There’s an awareness popping up where these guys are saying to themselves “hey, acting like a fuckin idiot won’t do me any good, so instead i can be a role model and still ball and make money.” There’s a huge air of maturity around some of these younger guys nowadays. I think it’s become less a problem over the past few years.

Question for those in the know

how strong is next year’s draft class even without Wall and Rubio? If it’s fairly strong wouldn’t it make sense for the NBA to allow Wall to come out this year to strengthen this year’s draft? It’d definitely be a good idea to have another supremely talented player in next year’s rookie class.

Impressive

I’m usually not a big fan of these mixtapes, but there are certain things that you can see. Certain things transcend the talent level that you’re playing against. I saw:

-Excellent body control in the air. Reminds me of the ways guys like Wade and Iverson can manipulate their bodies while flying full speed airborne into a crowd.
-Court vision. There were a lot of passes that were incredibly difficult, and they ended up exactly where you’d want the pass to go.
-Directional blocking. Against inferior competition a lot of guys can block shots. But I was impressed with the way he directs his blocks. They weren’t just swats out of bounds. The greatest blockers block the ball to where either they or their teammates can grab the ball and start a fast break. Tough skill to teach.
-Handles. The kid can clearly maintain excellent control of the ball, even when he’s moving very fast and seemingly out of control.

Conclusion: I want! I want!

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

by Exhibit G on Apr 14, 2009 6:31 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

You make 2 good points in your comment about blocking

1) In that article about Daryl Morey and his advanced stats he talks about how he wishes Dikembe would block the ball and get the ball back rather than doing the finger wag and how blocks are only really useful if you get the ball, but if the opposing team gets it back it wasn’t a turnover and they get another chance to score

2) Nothing to do with blocking, but you bring up the inferior competition argument. There’s certain things in that video that are completely independent of the competition, meaning its all about how well he does it, not how well he does it versus the other team. Those handles and passes and athleticism are just insane. This kid’s gonna be special.

I sort of agree

I think with the right coaching and focus on his development coming to the NBA could be just as good. Either way he’ll get acclimated to a pro-baller’s travel schedule, as well as pay, plus there’s less of a language barrier playing here.

He probably would be better of going to Europe, but I think the Kings would be better off if he was allowed to declare.

An interesting thought though: what if he declares and then before the NBA makes a ruling he signs with an agent?

Getting the right amount of minutes at the right times. For example, if a kid goes in and plays poorly, play him less the next few games while working with him in practice. When he starts playing well and becoming confident give him more minutes.

I mean he is playing in games there where he is …tall.

The guys he is playing against wont even make it to college for the most part let alone D1 schools.

In all the highlights he is ripping it up scoring etc but the competition is horrible. Rubio is a high school age kid in the highlights playing againsts a butt load of seasoned hardened professional players.

In the highlights package he is setting up these players at a professional ball club to succeed and getting them easy baskets, he is hitting spot up threes, he is playing solid D, i don’t really feel that excited after watching Walls show reel compared to rubios.

again

i’m not saying that coming out of highschool is the issue.Or that he can’t be successful.

I’m saying that if you are comparing Wall vs Rubio on the basis of some heavily edited footage, then you really have to be very worried about the level of competition wall is performing against.

At least with Rubio its in professional play. He is a kid playing amongst men whereas wall is a man playing against children.

That would be the true moment of misery

for this season.

I can just imagine seeing 2 teams jump for the 2nd and 3rd pick. And knowing that we’re either going to get the 1st or 4th pick. And getting the 4th.
