An MRI taken today at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento confirmed that Kings center Spencer Hawes suffered a left knee strain in the first quarter of Monday’s game (4/13/09) versus the Denver Nuggets.
Hawes will miss the Kings’ season finale tomorrow (4/15/09) in Minnesota against the Timberwolves.

What does this mean?
Other than confirming what we already know? Is a knee strain that serious? Should we be concerned beyond this? (Sorry Ike, I’m ignoring you again.)

Knee Sprain Info.
Via about.com
“Definition: A knee sprain means that you have injured one of the ligaments around the knee joint. Saying you have a “knee sprain” is not a terribly useful diagnosis for two reasons:
First: it does not tell you which ligament is injured. This is important because different ligaments are treated very differently. For example, ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries often need surgical reconstruction. On the other hand MCL (medial collateral ligament) injuries seldom require surgery.
Second: it does not tell you how badly the ligament is injured. The reason this is important is that minor injuries usually require minor treatment. More severe injuries may require more substantial treatment, rehabilitation, and possibly surgery.
Despite this, patients are often told they have a knee sprain."
"Have you guys ever seen the movie, ‘The Terminator?’ That’s what that kid is like. That kid has no facial expressions. He just plays and it’s like every kid out there on him is like Sarah Connor, and he’s just going to take his time and kill him ... That kid is good." - Pat Knight referring to Blake Griffin

Is a knee sprain(you) different from a knee strain(the article)?
and if so how?

Sprain v. Strain
“Strains are defined as a partially or completely torn muscle or tendon. With knee strains, you may feel symptoms similar to a sprain and may see bruising around the injured area.”
“A sprain is a stretch or tear of a ligament. More serious sprains involve complete tears of one or more of the knee ligaments.” – Hughston

So then
it looks like a muscle or tendon thing and not a ligament thing. That’s good, isn’t it?

Ben Wallace
Perhaps a similar situation to monitor. Ben Wallace has a sTrained (tendon in his left) knee, and is supposedly out for the playoffs. – Yahoo!

If I had to guess
I don’t think it’s that serious. Webber was carried off the floor in 03 wasn’t he? (I really don’t remember.) I really believe it’s a precaution, and if it’s a serious issue that can be fixed after 3 months, then so be it. He’s got the time.

Didn't look serious
Spencer was walking gingerly, but he was putting his weight on it, shot free throws with good form (bending and extending his legs), and appeared to be in good spirits. I’m not worried.

Knowing how much we love Spencer but worry about his knees I think it'd be hilarious
if next year he played an April Fool’s Joke on Kings fans and pretended to come down really badly on one knee and act like he couldn’t walk.
