Tyreke Evans Can't Shoot??
I have heard so much about how Tyreke can't shoot because he supposedly didn't make an outside shot in his 33 point final performance against Missouri. Well, watching this footage, I don't see why he couldn't become a better shooter with maturity.
By the way, I wonder how many freshman guards in college could score 33 in a game without making an outside shot.

I got a better one for you Dalt
How is it a guy who couldn’t shoot from the outside continue to drive inside at will with a team knowing he was going to do it.

Statistically - he can't
Not as big a problem with a big man who plays in the paint but a legit concern for a guard.
Bayless can’t really get on the court for Port. because after he still only shoots 36%.
(not a great Ast/TO either though)
Doesn’t mean neither ever will develop a shot, but the Larry Hughes etc are not forgotten.

Bayless is not Evans
Evan is 6’6. Bayless is 6’2. There’s a bit of difference.

OH
And by the way, Tyreke might be a better player than Bayless is right now.

Don't argue the obvious
I would hate you to see rip ALL of lttg’s argument in threads. I want him to see whine a few times about you missing the point when you already acknowledged it.

Stats?
I think I know something about stats. Let’s compare Larry Hughes’ freshman year with Tyreke’s:
Larry: FG% .415, 3-pt%: .290, FT%: .692, Minutes: 32.4, Pts: 20.9, Boards: 5.1, Assists: 2.4, Steals: 2.2
Tyreke: FG%: .455, 3-pt%: .274, FT%: .711, Minutes: 29.0, Pts: 17.1, Boards: 5.4, Assists: 3.9, Steals: 2.1
All pretty close except two things. Assists and school.
School?
Yes, Hughes put up these stats at St. Louis. He is the best player to ever play for that school. Second best is Ed Macauley who played in the NBA in the 50’s. Basically, Tyreke’s stats are much much better.

Evans only hits 25% of his jumpshots
and hey – I wasn’t actually taking a side there – but that IS the concern with him.
but punch away if you’re looking for someone to swing at.

From DraftExpress
I had never seen the kid play before the tournement and had no opinion. I came away impressed with his athleticism and aggression, but he did not in fact hit any jumpers. People that study players for a living tell me all the rest i know about him.
The problem is that he’s an incredibly ball-dominant point guard, often looking like a fish out of water when he’s forced to give up the rock for more than a few seconds. Memphis’ offense often looks quite stagnant, with Evans over-dribbling the ball at the top of the key as his four teammates stand around and twiddle their thumbs. He can be pretty sloppy with the ball at times, displaying questionable decision-making skills and incredibly poor shot-selection, which wouldn’t be as much of an issue if he was able to make shots at a respectable rate from the perimeter.
With his poor shooting mechanics (he fades away unnecessarily on every attempt) Evans is very streaky with his feet set in catch and shoot situations, and downright dreadful shooting the ball off the dribble. He only converts a dismal 25% of his jump-shots according to Synergy Sports Technology, but the problem is that he settles for them on a regular basis—they make up about 40% of his possessions, often with a hand in his face and early in the shot clock no less. While his skill-set may develop in time, Evans’ mentality looks extremely questionable—it’s hard not to come away with the impression that he’s a pretty selfish player. He’s likely going to have to revamp his shooting stroke entirely if he’s to ever become even a decent threat from the NBA 3-point line, something he’s been unwilling to do up until this point.

You're skilled at PR
And how to slant something to show exactly what you want it to show. What you suck at is is basketball knowledge.

See
I actually do my own research lttg. I don’t just read somebody else’s website and use it as gospel. That’s not a slam on you it’s just a point I want to make. I have studied basketball statistics for over 20 years. I have been spending the last 5 years almost exclusively with college stats. Not on a daily basis or anything, but as a hobby. Tyreke Evans has some phenomenal stats. Look him up and compare his freshman year with other freshman players of the past. Don’t just read a scout on a website.
I am NOT saying that Evans will be some 5 time all-star or a future superstar. What I AM saying is that freshman players that shoot as “poor” as he does rarely score 17.1 points in 29.2 minutes a game. VERY rarely. The guy is way above average. If this were last year’s draft, I would not be so high on him but since there are few if any (obvious) future star players coming out, Evans should be looked at very closely by the Kings.
Just as a crazy example, let’s compare Tyreke’s stats with Dwyane Wade’s freshman year:
FG% 3P% FT% MP. – PTS TRB AST STL
Evans: 45.5, 27.4, 71.1, 29.2, 17.1, 5.4, 3.9, 2.1
Wade: 48.7, 34.6, 69.0, 29.2, 17.8, 6.6, 3.4, 2.5
That’s DAMN good when you compare to a very good player.
Other examples?
1) Steve Nash shot 41% and scored 14.6 points per game (in 29.9 minutes) – in his SOPHOMORE year.
2) Allen Iverson shot 39% and ONLY 23% from 3-pt range! That is 6% and 4% WORSE than Evans respectively.
3) Anfernee Hardaway, a player I see Tyreke being similar too, shot 43.3% and scored 17.4 points – while playing SEVEN more minutes per game.
In all honesty, I could go on and on and on and on. Tyreke compares very well to almost every great point guard and combo guard in their freshman years.
My point is that while Evans may not be a great shooter, he may not even be a “good” shooter (that we probably agree on), he does almost everything else exceptionally well. Defense may be suspect, but how many freshman defensive stoppers at guard do you see coming out of college?
Tyreke has a low-risk bust potential in my opinion and has a very high upside.

Clarification
I see Evans as a combo guard not a point guard. When I say he does everything else very well, I am speaking about him as a combo guard not a point guard. His passing is not at a high enough level to be a “very good” point guard.

Sure, I'd be curious How those other guys got thier baskets
little guards can’t rely on just getting the layup (and I’m all FOR layups!) at the NBA level.
Anyway that wasn’t all that encouraging a scouting report when I read it. 25% is a concern, and that they went on to say he didn’t seem intersted in working on it – even more. Who knows, they may just not like him (?)
