FA to match the pick?

There's been two guys rated as elite prospects and possibly a third in John Wall in the upcoming draft.  I've heard rumors of a possible return of Hedo in Free Agency.  Made me wonder, if the Kings choose to sign someone, what FA's would fit best with the pick?

Griffin would fit with Hedo.  An extra shot creator would be needed on the perimeter if Griffin is the pick.  Hedo's shooting ability would also keep the floor spread allowing space for both Griffin and Martin to work. His high basketball IQ would help the team too.

For Rubio, Marion might be a good pickup.  His asking price has to be down and hopefully the ego too.  With Rubio at point the Kings would probably use a lot more pick and roles.  Marion is not a shot creator but can knock down the corner three and shouldn't need the ball in his hands.  He provides good defense and is a very strong rebounder out of the 3 position.  His rebounding would be key as Thompson and Hawes continue to get stronger and develop.  It would be nice to have an above-average defender in the starting lineup too.

Wall, I don't know enough about.  Might take a year or two to develop (if he's even in the draft).  Might want to sign a couple solid veteran leaders to such a young team.

What do you guys think?

Here's mine...

Griffin / Felton
Rubio, Wall / Varejao (need one defensive minded big, most likely cheap)

My guess is we just draft 3 players and don’t sign any FA’s.

There now I've met the 75 word count. -pookeyguru

Your question(s) are the answer

A lot depends on who we draft and which if any of McCants/Diogu we keep on the roster.

Overall, I think I agree with MoP, we don’t go for a FA except perahps a small 1 or 2 yr deal to fill a hole and then maybe go for someone at the trade deadline – and almost certainly next summer.

Agreed

If we allow all the free agents to walk, it leaves us w/ an 8-man roster. League req’s a minimum of 12. The draft gets us to 11, so we have to add one more. I don’t think it’ll be anyone significant, though.

So, we have to sign at least one FA. A lot may depend on who we get in the draft and what trades (if any) are available/made.
Hopefully, K9’s expiring contract starts looking real nice to a team who fancies LBJ & Co.

Are you kidding?

We can only dream? K-9’s contract will be a very, very enticing piece for a lot of team at next year’s deadline.

The real question is whether or not we’ll trade it away. Portland decided this past season not to trade Raef LaFrenz’s contract, but not because there was a lack of interested parties.

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

by Exhibit G on Apr 15, 2009 12:24 PM PDT up reply actions

You have to take something back in that scenario

Probably a much longer contract. Will we want anything in our current state? Depends whats offered.
I’ve been saying for over a year we may have to suffer the dog biscuits in locker # 9 ‘till the end. But there’s some hope for sure – I wasn’t saying that.

LaFrentz

Raef’s situation was different. His team didn’t have to pay his salary because it was covered by insurance. K9’s contract has to be paid by the team. So, it’s really best for us to trade it versus hanging on to it. Unless we want the cap space for the summer.

There no sense in trading it unless (its this summer?)

or you’re getting back something you really want. At the deadline, what does it matter that you don’t have to pay the last two months if you’re taking on someone you’ll have to pay for years that you don’t necessarily want?

Anyway, there are still possibilities but it would need to be a deal we want or we should just let him expire and use the money in 2010 for a FA we do want.

no brainer...

its Griffin and Sessions… best player in the draft, and best young FA pg.

Is Milwaukee that dumb?

Would they let sessions go? I don’t know if its due to my man crush, but I have a hard time believing they’ll let him go for anything less than a king’s (pardon the pun) ransom.

He’s going to be heavily targeted, as is Villaneuva.

Neither Charlie V or Sessions will be playing for Sacramento next season.

Really rather have Millsap and Rubio than Griffin and Sessions as it is anyway.

No major FA...yet

I think it’ll be important to add a free agent after we are done collecting lottery picks. That is to say when our young core is good enough to make the playoffs, we should look to fill in with FA(s). Now if we had a great opportunity to nab a great deal on the perfect guy, I’d guess you’d have to do that.

Otherwise, I’d say not yet.

by DustyG on Apr 15, 2009 1:21 PM PDT reply actions

My two cents...

If we draft Griffin- We will need a point guard to run the show. Ramon Sessions or Felton would be a welcome addition.

If we draft a point guard( Rubio, Jennings)- Hedo would be a nice fit, but I would even try to pursue a guy like Charlie Villenueva. Not only can the guy stretch the defense out with the three, he gets a good number of rebounds. New lineup- PG-Rubio SG- K Mart SF- Charlie V PF-Thompson C-Hawes. I would definently enjoy watching that lineup play together.

Pass on Hedo, but rebounding PF makes sense

Last in rebounds, and no backup PF or center. The last position we need is another SF, but if you insist on getting one, there several that will be available with our 2nd rounder for a lot less than Hedo.

We don't have a real SF

Garcia is really a SG who plays there, and Noc who is a hybrid SF/PF as is Donte.

No, they're not real SF's but we're paying them anyways.

and bring in another one won’t help that much. Especially for the price we’d have to pay to get Hedo. Who’s probably looking for a long term contract, for the security of his family.

Hmmm

Charlie V is an interesting idea. I really like his points/rebounds per minute and he can spread the defense. The problem is would there be enough basketballs for everyone. With Rubio playing as a passer only (for the most part) and JT not needing the ball much, I would really like this lineup. Can Villanueva guard anybody though?

Not to the extent we need

But the defense won’t be automatically fixed next year. Still, I’m not that keen on Charlie V either. There just isn’t these brilliant overhaul moves out there that everyone thinks there is. Unless one pops up that is.

True

But Villanueva would be a good starting piece. The dude can score, better than Artest did, and he can rebound, better than Artest. Can he defend like Artest?

Next question.

I say we

Target a PG, we have 2 young bigs a SF who plays hard and a SG who scores at will, so I say we get a PG, Draft or FA, the best player we bring in this offseason should be a PG. Someone who can play Defense, cuz we have enough weapons to score (K-Mart, JT, Hawes, Cico, Noc) We need someone who can stop plays before the start, a defensive PG. A big strong PG who can defend, he doesn’t need to score just stop them from scoring….

by shadowchicken on Apr 16, 2009 3:50 PM PDT reply actions

A big strong PG who can defend

Very few if any NBA PG’s can get by their defender and past the interior defense by themselves, except against us. Most rely on transision, picks & screens, or poor defense. Even Beno can stay in front of the average pg if he isn’t picked. The smaller quicker pg’s might defend well, but get posted up too easily. The bigger stronger PG’s might not stay in front as well but are harder to shoot over, have you ever seen Cisco block a smaller shooter?

Basketball is a game of mismatches. It’s very seldom you get great defense and great offense in the same player. That’s why the team defense is so important. The bigs and the pg’s have to work together to insure that the offense doesn’t get an advantage with their pick & roll, And, players need to know who’s responsibility it is to help on screens. The best defender in the history of basketball, can’t defend his man when hampered by picks and multiple screens. Defense is a team game.

Truth

This years squad may have had the worst pick and roll defense I’ve seen from a Kings team. Either all of our players are just basketball idiots, or our coaching staff didn’t have the first clue on how to teach defense.

Than we will learn anything about any other player minus the top draft pick coming in. Really, what exactly will Andres Nocioni greatly improve on this summer?

I'd rule out Sessions

He’s a restricted FA right? I don’t see the Bucks being one of the major players in the 2010 Free Agency season. There might be some restricted FA’s who will be much easier to obtain this year because teams are trying to protect cap space… like the Knicks with David Lee and Nate Robinson.

The Kings need a few more Bobby Jackson types to help the young guys mature, at the very least.

by abasketballfan on Apr 17, 2009 2:37 AM PDT reply actions

True but...

The Bucks are going to have to make a desicion whether to bring back Sessions or Villenueva, they will not be able to afford both. Because they have Ridnour they may decide to hold on to Villenueva and not match any offers to Sessions. Regardless, its going to be a very exciting offseason for the Kings.

Member of play JT and Donte Greene 40 mins a game club.

How good of shooter is Sessions

Can anyone provide a scouting report on Sessions. I’m living outside the country so I didn’t see much basketball this season. Especially not the Bucks.

Obviously we need a guy at PG who can defend and create for others because Udrih doesn’t do that. Petrie won’t add guys who can’t shoot though nor should he.

I think we must upgrade the PG spot this year if we end up with Griffin. Keeping in mind that they’ll probably be the third option offensively in the future behind Griffin and Martin. It should greatly help the delopment of the bigs.

Options include:

FA – Sessions
Trade for a vet – Felton, Hinrich come to mind as possibilities
draft at #23 – Patty Mills?
Trade up in draft – Teague, Curry, Flynn, Lawson….
