Requiem for Our Team

(A fantastic FanPost from Exhibit G. -- TZ)

The season is over, and we've survived.

Some of this team will remain intact, others will not be around next season.  Natt will probably receive an official pink slip in the near future.

I first want to explain the title of this post.  Every end of the season marks the end of every team.  Every team experiences changes.  The cast of characters changes.  Sometimes the changes are minor, other times they are drastic.  As bad as this season has been, this was our team.  For whatever reason, I feel closer to this team than any team since 2002.  The cycle begins again now, but we're now dealing with a different team.  We'll see players leave, we'll see new players enter our realm.  We grow to appreciate this team just as every other.  But I felt compelled to review and recap the season that just was.

We've got a lot of ground to cover, so let's get to it.

Star-divide

First, the tearful goodbyes, in memory of those who have moved on.  Sorry if that sounded a bit morbid.  I'd be remiss if I didn't begin with the beginning of the end, Mr. Reggie Theus.  Amid rumors of unprofessionalism, Theus was uncerimoniously dismissed.  Had Reggie really been that bad?  At the time we considered the roster to be underachieving, but in hindsight perhaps they were just underachievers.  Or perhaps this just means that Natt was worse.  But we'll get to him in a minute.  Theus came in with optimism, but alas it was not meant to be.

Brad Miller and John Salmons were the finishing touches in a rebuilding process that began with Bibby and Artest.  We ushered out the old guard, the last major players of an era that passed us by.  The opportunity to win a championship is a small window, and our last window was officially closed.  At this point I'm referring more to Miller than Salmons.

Quincy Douby and Mikki Moore were waived.  We hope the best for them both, but we all agree it was better than they go.

Departing is such sweet sorrow, but every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.  We welcomed new characters to our lives.  Most notably the new kids JT and Donte (more on them later).  We welcomed back B-Jax, welcomed in Nocioni, and said "I didn't realize you were still in the NBA" to Calvin Booth and Rashad McCants.  Too little, too late we got introduced to Ike Diogu.  Nocioni will be with us for a while, Booth, McCants and (probably) Diogu will join Drew Gooden under the "temporary layover" category.  Speaking of Gooden, nobody on craiglist has shown any interest in buying my #90 Kings jersey.  Weird.

I mentioned JT and Donte, and I want to spend a little more time on them.  I'm going to throw Spencer in here as well, since this was the season where he really began to emerge.  These three gave us hope.  Shock and Hawes earned their way into starting roles.  Hawes became the full-time starter at center when Miller got traded, but don't let that fool you.  Miller was gone either way, but Hawes earned the right to be the starter.  Same for JT.  I recall when he first started, um, er, starting.  He has earned the right to stay in the starting line-up.  If Blake Griffin comes to town this summer, he'll have to work hard to replace either of these fellas.  I think we all saw the glimpses of potential in Hawes last season, so it was less of a surprise.  Nobody on draft day -- nobody -- expected this level of production from Mr. Who? out of Rider.  JT surpassed our expectations, and won our support.

Donte Greene gave us the Donte Greene show.  Oh yeah, he also played well in spots.  Buckets is the kind of guy you like having on the bench.  High energy, loves being a part of this team.  Let me say that again, he loves being part of this team.  I'm not sure how you put a price on that.  He needs to work on his shot selection, but this guy has a very high ceiling (which is good, cause he's tall and it would suck to be bumping your head on a low ceiling all the time).

Speaking of the rookies, we mustn't forget the laughs this season.  Specifically, JT and Donte both getting popcorn in their cars.  Er, sorry Spence, I meant to say "in their whips."  I'm also really happy that Donte survived the wrath of B-Jax.

It seems like I've gone a long time without mentioning Kevin Martin.  He had a good season, scored a lot of points in some games, but it seems like he wasn't a major contributor in this season.  Probably just my perception, and the stats may reflect differently.  But when I think of Speed's season I mostly think of a nagging ankle injury, missed games, and endless debates over his defense.  Mr. Martin, you have one job this offseason.  That job is to get healthy.

As much as I'd rather not discuss him, Beno Udrih was our starting PG this season.  Never quite aggressive enough, never happy with the offensive scheme, and never quite living up to the expectations we all had for him.  I honestly think he'd be a great guy coming off the bench as a back-up PG, but the Beno-as-a-starter experiment should be over.

We had a few high points this season.  We watched the young players getting meaningful minutes and showing us glimpses of how great they might be someday.  We snuck in a few wins against good teams (like the win over the Hornets).  And we learned how to use Natt as a curse word.

We certainly had low points.  From kicking off the season with B-52 on a pot suspension, to Martin's nagging injurt, to counting ping pong balls.  This was not a great season.  This was not a good season.  This was not a bad season.  This was a horrible season.  But we all kept watching.  We kept reading.  We kept caring.

Sometimes we cared and quibbled about very silly things.  Seems like we've been talking about the draft since November.  We've had our endless debates about Griffin, Rubio, and Thabeet.  The debates will continue into the summer, but at least they'll take on a bit more structure.  Soon we'll know what players have declared for the draft.  We'll know for certain where we'll be picking.  Sometime this summer we'll know who our coach will be.

Until then, we know this: things will be better.  We went through the lowest low in franchise history.  It can only get better from here.  The future is bright, and we will once again return to being contenders.  It won't be immediate, but we're on our way.  I think even pookey and lttg can agree on that.

Nice summary ExG

Rec’d.

For whatever reason, I feel closer to this team than any team since 2002.

I think I’m in the same boat, which is pretty crazy considering the lack of success on the court. The sheer number of home blowouts (and some to really piss poor teams), the worse than expected performance on the road, the change from one bad head coach to another…why did I enjoy watching this team the last 20 games?

Well, really it all boiled down to JT and Spencer. And it wasn’t watching these guys improve their games individually, it was watching them improve their games individually AND their cohesion as the front court of the future. These guys are really a damn good fit together. Take that, add a healthy Kevin Martin, hopefully a Griffin/Rubio and maybe one other Petrie gem at the 23rd pick – and you are starting to get somewhere.

I feel the same

My 10 year old son and I go to the games together, we made almost every one. No matter how bad things were at times, we only left early twice – super bowl Sunday (had people coming over) and another game when he had a major homework assignment to finish. My son loves basketball and the Kings. The one thing he learned from JT and Spencer is they brought it every game. JT’s motor never stops and his constant hustle has changed my son’s game. Hustle makes up for lacking in talent. Add talent and hustle, you get JT. Noc is in that group and always BJax. It was a pleasure watching the young bigs, that is my take away from this season.

Meh?

If we get #1, it’s glory. Tell me that anything less than #1 won’t leave us all feeling a lot of anger and/or angst.

if

Rubio delcares, and Kings get the #2 pick, I’ll be perfectly happy. If he doesn’t declare, or the Kings get anything lower then the 2nd pick …. I will cry.

Yep.

And LPA, we only have a 25% chance of winning the first overall pick. Which, of course, means we have a 75% chance of NOT getting the first pick.

We all sit around in a puddle of our own giddyness talking about Griffin and Rubio, and it scares me that we will not be fully prepared for the very real (and more probable) situation that we’ll all be weeping tears of frustration on May 19th.

Can you f**king imagine how you’d feel if PHX won the lottery? Excuse, I’m going to go punch some infants in the face now.

I have really enjoyed your posts this season EX G, thanks

and always go to them first if I see you’ve posted a new one. You have been an island of sanity in a crazy season and despite the losses you’ve remained (fairly) mostly positive all season.

I echo your feelings about the team and our players and despite his improved play in April am a little less charitable towards beno. We need a pg who can distribute better and take advantage of the kids down low and who too often are open and seemingly off the radar of every one of our players with the ball in their hands.

Kevin………Kevin. Kevin had the quietest season possible for such an elite scorer. I think he had three games where I thought he had played ok only to look at the box score to see he had scored over 30 points and the game at Oracle where he scored 50 points with incredible efficiency was a revelation.

Cisco made big strides this season, definitely growing into his new contract. Nocs, I hope we keep him, he and Cisco showed some special chemistry and my take is for now he’s good enough to keep and in this economy a little too expensive to trade but we’ll see.

Hope BJax comes back for the vet minimum. If we get anything past second place in the lottery it’s going to be a huge disappointment and if we do get one of the first 2 picks and the smoke clears it will be so huge if we land Griffin or Rubio.

G -

Other than the fact that I’m a little disappointed that you didn’t pen this to the tune of “Knights in White Satin” by The Moody Blues (I loooooove your lyric posts!), I found the read to be quite filling without leaving me feeling full. The perfect portion, with all of the vitamins and nutrients that a Kings fan needs. Well done, G. Well done.

Almost

Here’s one I was working on, to the tune of “Welcome to the Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance. Sadly, the original song kinda sucks (lyrically) in the second half and there wasn’t much else I could do. I like the intro though.

When I was, a young man,
My agent, took me into the city
To buy an escalade.

He said, “Son when you go pro,
would you be the savior of the broken,
the beaten and the Kings?”
He said “Will you defeat them,
your demons, and all the non-believers,
the mock drafts that they have made?”
“Because one day, I’ll need you,
A payday, to sign you in the summer,
To join The Draft Parade.”

When I was, a young man,
My agent, took me into the city
To buy an Escalade.
He said, “Son when, you go pro,
would you be the savior of the broken,
the beaten and the Kings?”

Sometimes I get the feeling he’s manipulating me.
And other times I feel like I should go pro.
And through it all, the rise and fall, my potential and Thabeet’s.
And when you’re gone we want you all to know.

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

Great read

That was pretty funny and insightful as well. Although this season was a perfect storm of injuries, bad coaching, economic woes and cost cutting, a franchise giving good times and great memories to the fans is a successful one.

Nugs fan here but I lived in California and went to some Kings games on road trips, I’ve always like the team. As you pointed out Udrih is a backup in a starters role, period. I have a theory that the Spurs did him a favor and talked him up so they could dump him off for something and possibly get him a job somewhere. He was terrible, I’m not trying to be mean but I think he played his way onto the bench or the D league on most other teams with a season like that.

I think Cisco Garcia has earned a starting role. I love guys like that, smart and hard working while doing a little bit of everything – he can fill a variety of roles on that team. I was at the Denver game, he was fun to watch but definitely not a polished point guard, as he couldn’t seem to pass without jumping in the air. If he can be worked in as a starter with KevMart I think the team could really improve.

Nocioni is a guy I think you need to have on the bench. He comes from the Argentine school of flopping and offensively is completely average to me. The one thing he has is heart and hustle, and he showed up big in a few playoff games in Chicago. I think there’s a reason he never carved out a starting role for himself on that team. I would say he’s an improved version of McCants but apparently that’s a four letter word around here. Anyhow wishing you good luck in the draft and next season guys. I’ll make it to another game out there sometime.

I personally would be upset if we didn't get #1

But I don’t think its’ the end of the world. For all the talk of the lack of starpower in this draft, it’s actually quite deep. Here’s the WORST case scenario:

we pick 4th, 23rd, & 31st:

With the 4th pick, i’d expect Griffin, Thabeet & Hill to go 1-2-3. (we’re taking Rubio out of the equation because – like i said – this is the WORST case scenario). We have two options here. Both involve drafting a PG.

1.) we take a shot on Brandon Jennings, who is a consensus top 5 pick and fits a need.

2.) we see what we can get for a package of the fourth pick, Nocioni, Kenny’s expiring deal, and Beno – please note that Beno HAS to be part of this deal, even if it requires taking a worse package back. This is really our only chance to get rid of him.

One thing we’d HAVE to get back in this deal is a lower end lottery pick or pick from a team that just barely made the playoffs. We have to be able to draft Flynn, Evans or Lawson, or no deal.

I think the Suns might take the shot with Nash inevitably leaving, that Beno could possibly thrive playing SSOL-style. That would give us the 14th pick where we could probably get Flynn or Evans. Plus they’d want the cap space from Kenny’s expiring contract. Unfortunately, what do they have that we’d want?

After that I say we take a shot on Dajuan Blair if he’s around with the 23rd pick. If not, we could bring in Patrick Mills and have hip compete for that starting PG spot. Then we could grab Dante Cunningham with the 31st. Or if we get Blair, we should go after Toney Douglass or Darren Collison with the 31st. Either way we should get 3 productive players out of this draft. But we should trade Beno and draft at least 2/3 as PG’s, in my opinion.

Great Post EG

Only quibble? I haven’t been that surprised with JT. I saw his potential in last years draft. With that said, I didn’t expect him to make so many strides in his rookie season.
