At this point
If someone else outbids us and he turns into a monster for them, I’m willing to live with that.
I say it depends
It depends on if the Kings end up with Blake Griffin or not. I’m sorry, 2 strong games does not warrant a big contract. He might be worth a flier if we don’t end up with Griffin, though.
I voted 2 years $5 million
I’d have no problem with signing him for $2.5 mil a year. If he can come off the bench behind Shock and Hawes and play as well as he has then I’d love to keep him. Then we’d have an incredibly solid front court and can focus on drafting a little Spaniard.
However, it’s a big if that he’ll play that well. His effort and conditioning have been questioned since he’s been in the league.

2 yes $5m
And if he beats out Shock I would make him the starter. A good coach looks at who is playing the best in practice and gives them the opportunity to succeed in the game. If Ike really was kicking butt on S&H in practice, Natt is a fool for not giving him more playing time until the end of the season. But wait, that’s already a given.
"Shut up and Coach!"

2 yr 5 mil, but only if we’re not drafting Blake of course. but really I ’d rather invest that money into cyborg prosthetic ankles for K-mart, and a knee for Hawes

Ike Diogu's tears cure cancer...
…too bad he never cries.
Wait....Why is everybody clapping? Everyone around me is clapping.... I guess I should be clapping too... GO LAKERS!!! I hate living in So Cal
Oh yah
No contract offers until after the draft. I wanna see all 3 picks before making any other offers.

2 years 5 mil
I’d like to request a Playoffs open thread. I have no interest in joining another blog and I want some place to post that I really want Rick Adelman to get some props and I love that Yao is coming up big. Special added bonus if the Rockets win of hopefully shutting up those annoying Blazer fans for one day at least. Oh, and the Rockets finally getting out of the 1st round would be great especially if it’s done without McGrady.

And wow, How about those Bulls
Noah, 17 boards and Rose with 36 and 11. Wonder if Miller will try to make him wear a Hello Kitty backpack until he’s played 82 pro games next season?
At least the former Kings tried. Salmons and Miller a combined 8 for 27 for 16 points. Yikes. They did have 18 boards and 1 assist though.

Should add that my rooting for the Rockets really surprises me
especially considering my dislike of Ron Artest, and that I like Portland as a city. One of 3-4 places I’d live if I moved back to the states(and Sac is not one of those, too damn hot), and that I liked the Blazers before this season. Guess Annoying Blazer fans invading our site > my dislike of Artest as a person.
Of note: Blazers losing but Roy torching Artest, made me really happy.

I think the topic at hand is actually about as close to a consensus as you're gonna get on this site.
Pretty much: Only throw money at Diogu if we don’t get the #1 pick, and even then don’t throw that much at him.
like you said, game is almost over
will limit the posts, so as not to hi-jack this tread too much. Kind of late for a separate thread at this point. Should be one for tomorrow though.

Agreed Please keep on topic.
While Deleran has a point in that most of us agree we should wait for the draft, I differ in opinion of how much we should offer. I voted 2 yrs 8 mil. This guy has the talent and has showed he has some polished post moves. At this point the kings should take a chance at this guy. Besides 2 years does not kill us and lets be frank, is there really anyone on the market worth more for the price we are willing to invest?
With the fourth pick of the draft the kings select...
4 million extra on the books could be the difference between
being able to pick up a good FA in ’10 and being stuck trying to put a sign and trade together.

Yes but with all the teams clearing space for next summer, could we really expect to land a big name?
I think we need to face the fact that the Kings are going to have to build a quality team through the draft and a few sleepers. Petrie definitely has his work cut out for him. If we can get a really solid core together, then we may be able to land a big FA to push us over the top but I really don’t see that happening by next summer.
With the fourth pick of the draft the kings select...
We probably won't have a shot at the LeBron's or the Bosh's
but we could get a next tier guy. Someone like a Redd, Jefferson, or a Ford. And that’s what we should be looking for, a FA to fill in the holes that’ll get us into the playoffs in ‘10-’11 and contribute as we move up the ladder.

I don't want
A jefferson or a ford. Redd < K-Mart.
I’d want Amare, but I don’t think we could lure him. I agree with Kangsfan. I doubt our ability to get a good FA, so if GP puts 2 years 7-8 mill into Ike, I’ll live.
Kings fan? A's Fan?! Al Davis Run Raiders Fan?!!?!! ANNNND you're sacrificing 2 years of your life because you're LDS?!!?!?!?!?! Yeah, Masochist is the new sexy.
I think 4 million a year might have made sense before the economic downturn,
but that looks like too much money right now. I’d rather just have the cap space to accept salary dumps.

Ok, I see 2 votes for "5 years, $30 million"
The one is Petrie, who’s the other?

Voted 2 years 5 million
But the second year HAS to be a team option. If he proves to be a solid backup you pick it up, is not you let him and the hot tub girls go.
As much as we make fun of him (and I will continue to) I wish him well and hope he can help this team get better. At the right price, I don’t even care if he was the 4thbig off the bench for this team
Voted 1 for $4M
He’s in the 4th yr of his rookie contract. If we make the QO of $3.9M for one yr, he remains a RFA and we retain the right of 1st refusal, to all other offers. If he doesn’t work out, it will be cheaper than a 2yr contract, and it won’t affect our 2010 cap space.
If he works out we can renegotiate his contract later, or use him as a filler at the trade deadline. Either way the money is going to affect our 09 cap space, and we’re not getting anyone as good, for any less money.
Of course, if we draft Griffin, we won’t need him as much and can make a minimum bid.

HT FTW
I was in the 2 year ($5M) camp but your logic is unrefutable. It is an automatic team option, it gives the guy big incentive to produce for an even bigger payout in the FA market and can be resolved with money off the books in 2010 making him a valuable trade chip (as you point out).
The only question I ask is: why did Petrie and the Maloofs hire Levien – were you not available?

Has anyone ever thought...
that Ike played well because he was in his contract year? Just because he had two breakout games doesn’t mean he is actually worth a single dime. All Kings fans, let us not forget the dreaded signing of Udrih just because he played well in his contract year! It is all about economics for these guys, and for Ike this was about survival, he had to play well in his last few games or he for sure was headed to the NBDL.

I'm gonna take a guess and say that
Has anyone ever thought that Ike played well because he was in his contract year? Just because he had two breakout games doesn’t mean he is actually worth a single dime
you don’t hang out here a lot
Did you ever buy a used car? How many times did you test drive it?
Ike performed well because he has & showed the skills to perform well. If he has the skills and can perform them in a game then he is worth something. How much is a matter of opinion. And, will be determined by the negotiations between the buyer and the seller.
Once you know that the player can perform the skills that you need (score & rebound) the only reason not to make an offer, is if the player has soon a history of not working hard. And, that’s not the case with Ike. Natt said he stayed in shape even though he wasn’t getting PT. His game at Denvers high altitude should be proof of that. And, if that’s not enough, you can take Bjax’s word that Ike was killing everyone in practice.
Has the skill, works hard, performed at the most critical time of his career. I’ll buy that.

Udrih did the same thing
Did he deserve a long term deal?
Member of play JT and Donte Greene 40 mins a game club.
No, but then no one is suggesting a long term deal for Ike
If you read my post above, I suggested a 1 yrs deal, most suggest a 2 yr deal at 1/7th of what Beno got.
Ignore the point that we need to fill 2 roster spots and 1 rotation spot with bigs. Now, go and find me a qualified player for under $5M.

How bout
Demarcus Nelson? Petrie needs to go.
Member of play JT and Donte Greene 40 mins a game club.
Looking for bench warmers that will work hard and have talent
Nelson is now on the Bulls after clearing the waivers. I mean has Petrie ever really picked up a young player that wasn’t drafted? How did he miss Morrow or Azuibuike?
Member of play JT and Donte Greene 40 mins a game club.
how many other teams
Missed those guys? And I don’t think either one is that great. More like your run of the mill NellieBall players.

And one more thing
Im not suggesting Diogu would be a horrible bench player, I just hate to see the Kings management continue to spend money on guys that are unproven. Yes Diogu had two stellar performances, so did Douby at one point in his Sac career…
Member of play JT and Donte Greene 40 mins a game club.
So wait a minute...
In previous posts, you say that Petrie needs to go because he doesn’t sign any quality undrafted talent (such as Morrow or Azubuike).
Yet here, you reproach him for spending money on guys that are unproven. So I guess the solution is only take fliers on guys that you can quickly cut? And hopefully you can figure out in the couple weeks of training camp whether a guy is worth it or not? Sounds like a slim margin…
by misterbrister on Apr 20, 2009 8:41 AM PDT up reply actions
Spending money as in multimillion dollar contracts
Morrow and Azuibuike were originally signed to 10 day contracts before they were picked up for the season. When is the last time the Kings signed someone to a 10 day contract to see if they are proven? Not every contract has to be like Diogu’s, guys will play and practice for little (in the scheme of things) to get an oppurtunity to play at the next level. Typically while in rebuiliding mode one would see more younger talent from the NBDL on the roster, guys that are just itching at the chance to play in the NBA, that would work twice as hard as some of the current Kings on the roster. There were zero on this years roster.
I think in the first weeks of training camp you can get a great feel for who is going to work hard and who can contribute to your team. Its just like good old high school basketball tryouts. You have an oppurtunity to make an impression on the coaching staff, those that show promise make the cut.
And last, Morrow and Azubuike had never been given the oppurtunity to play in the NBA, Diogu has been on 3(?) teams in his NBA career and has done little. There is a big difference between guys like Diogu and Morrow. One of which is NBA experience and the chance to prove your worth. Ike has had a 6 year tryout session and nothing to show, and mark my words Petrie will sign him to a long term deal. Spending money for ten day contracts, or the league mininum which I believe is 375,000, is much more affordable and smart than locking someone down for a long term deal, that will ultimatley be untradeable.
Bottom line- Ike Diogu is unproven even when presented with multiple oppurtunities. Morrow and Azuibuike were unproven but this was their first oppurtunity.
Member of play JT and Donte Greene 40 mins a game club.
Never crossed my mind
and who is this Udrih guy?
With the fourth pick of the draft the kings select...
who the Kings test drove for a year and approved of
with NO point guards going into the 2008-09 season and with no other better prospects available, who was also sought after and offered the MLE by another team.
If, in beautful technicolor, high definition, 1080P hindsight, you, the GM of the Kings passed on this years’ Beno Udrih, exactly whom would you have used as your starting PG at the start of the season?
A) Sean Singletary – your second round pick
B) Bobby Brown – Cal-State Fullerton, Mark Stein favorite, fresh from Summer League
C) Tyronne Lue
D) We don’t need no stinkin’ point guards. Quarterbacking a basketball team is a mixed metaphor that is totally over-rated. Cisco can do it all.
E) puh-lease could you give it a rest already? Beno disappointed and it was a bad contract.

Um...I don't know Tyus Edney?
BTW I was being sarcastic about Sac King’s comment
With the fourth pick of the draft the kings select...
Perhaps we save the money
and sign a guy like Marcus Williams, Anthony Morrow, or even Shaun Livingston, at least these guys have more potential than Udrih.
Member of play JT and Donte Greene 40 mins a game club.
Hilarious!
I would rather take an injured Livingston over Udrih though, at least his turnover to assist ratio wouldn’t suck…
Member of play JT and Donte Greene 40 mins a game club.
True
You can’t turn the ball over when you’re hurt.
There are roughly two dozen PG’s that are better than Udrih. Williams, Livingston and Morrow are not three of them.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
Just out of curiousity
How many of those two dozen come off the bench?
Member of play JT and Donte Greene 40 mins a game club.
You need to factor in the opposition as well
A Nuggets team already locked into its playoff position, and a horrible Minnesota team.
I said, 1 year, $2 million but I would be cool with a team option for year 2.
If a one year can work....
that’s the best. With 2010 coming up, he’ll be at least be a valuable trade asset if he sucks during the season.
Max contract
Length and dollars. Because Ike’s 2 game performance down the stretch way overrides the remainder of his career.
I think a billboard offering to mow his lawn is in order as well.
