Playoffs open thread

(Ed. Note - We'll leave this up for the thread for all playoff games throughout this weekend) -

By popular demand, so that the Ike Diogu thread can stay on track. Better late than never? How bout that Derrick Rose and Jose Juan Barea? Lebron James? Nice night for the road teams, eh? Picks for tommorow night's games, whatever. (I'm really just trying to hit the minimum word count here.) Sill not there huh? The unspoken subplot in the Boston/Chicago series: Brad Miller vs former teammate Mikki Moore. Bad Blood?

Oden shuffles his feet almost every time he shoots (not that last time though). When they play the Lakers or on the road, he’s going to get called for those.

namely….you need someone ridiculously quick. Barea, Parker, Brooks, those guys really had impact. You have to have someone to stay in front of the quick guys or your defense is going to get destroyed by them.

not ready for primetime. Too-much young talent that believes the hype about themselves so far tonight. I’ll be interested to see if LMA and the supporting cast take this personal and decide to kick some ass in the next few games or if they roll over and play with the lack of intensity they had tonight.

I didn't watch a whole ton of the Rox/Blazers game

but I did see a little of the first and I saw Artest do something I never saw him do for us. One play, he got the ball behind the arc and just passed it in to Yao in the post for the made basket… for no reason at all. He just passed it. And then on the very next play he gets the ball in the same spot. He goes for the three… but he fakes it and passes it. That was two unselfish plays in a row for Ron? I halfway expected monkeys to fly outta my ass.

Reasoning

Artest has been on this season, and an “on” Artest almost took the Kings over the champion Spurs. Little help from Bonzi too, but Artest clealry has a better cast around him now.

Secondly, with no T-Mac, Yao will have to step up his game, and he will finally meet expectations.

Diogu bandwagon is premature

Ok so Natt puts Diogu in for major minutes in the last two or three games. So he scores a bunch against teams that are little better than his own. And then….? We saw Benoh basically do the same last year. And…?

Impressive debut win for these (hated) 2009 LA Lakers

On paper, the Jazz have talent galore, a great coach, though they are missing their starting center and second leading scorer, Mehmet Okur.

This should have been a close game. It was not.

Yes, Trevor Ariza had a career game, but the Lakers led from start to finish. I would not want to be around Jerry Sloan after this loss. I expect more of a contest in game 2, but as of today, the Lakers look like they are a cut above the rest of the West. Let’s hope for a better series from the Jazz.

So far, looks like Spurs/Dallas will be a good fight and Chicago/Boston as well.

I don't think a Martin for Igoudala trade would ever pan out anyway, so its a bit of a moot point,

but I think Igoudala has a killer instinct that Martin hasn’t displayed to this point. That said, Philadelphia toiled in the lottery for alot of years with Igoudala as their best player. If you put better guys around Martin while keeping him as the focus of your offense, he might surprise you.

tough call

they are very different players even though they play the same position. You could make a reasonable case for either, imo.

Let’s see how Kevin plays when he actually is on a real NBA team. The Kings have one legitimate NBA starter, a couple of decent reserves and two young bigs learning their way.

And yes, to answer your inevitable next statement for your other whipping boy, the lack of talent on the team is certainly from GP’s questionable/bad decisions.

Kevin was injured all year and still has had a better PER every year for the last 3, is significantly cheaper and is a better offensive player.

Iguodala is a better defender and more rounded and to his extreme credit has played almost every game the last four years. For either, I’d be plenty happy to have them on my team going forward.

To me it’s a +/- question: does Martin’s efficiency make up for his atrocious defense, and does Iguodala’s good defense make up for his inefficiency of offense?

Wow... only two top seeded teams have won games so far

Atlanta might be the third, but the Heat could very well take it from them. Plus, the Hornets have a great chance of beating the Nuggets.

so much for home court advantage

Thoughts from Day 2

The Jazz are really an “it” guy away, aren’t they? For all the talk of Deron Williams, he’s not the number 1 guy. He’s great, and I love his game, but he’s really not they guy who can lead you through the playoffs. I think this will soon become the central focus of the Paul vs. Williams debate. Utah has so many good players, they should honestly be the favorite in the West. But they lack their own Kobe or Gasol. Someday perhaps, but not today.

What happened to the Hornets? Honestly, the 7th seed in the west is nothing to sneeze at, but I think Byron Scott has drastically underachieved with his current roster. Give it two seasons or less and I predict he’ll be fired.

Atlanta looked good. But for the team that won handily, I wasn’t overly impressed. Seemed to me like Miami lost the game more than Atlanta won it. A win is a win, but I wouldn’t pencil in Atlanta to the next round.

Boston is another team I think will still win the series. If Rose goes off for 30+ a game, look out. Cause suddenly we’ll have the new dominant PG in the East. I just don’t think he can do it consistently…yet.

L.A. has ridiculous depth. I hate them, but right now they have to be considered the favorite for the title. I’m not sure how anyone stops them. I think there’s a 1% chance we see anything other than an L.A. vs. Cleveland final. And I think the Lakers would still be the favorites. But I’m not sure how you count out LeBron. I’d watch, I know that much.

In conclusion, I love the NBA Playoffs. I love basketball, and I love it even more when there’s a lot on the line. I like when the games really matter. Can’t wait to see how things play out.

I see CP3 and not a lot else and they’ve got 77 million in salary tied up in 11 players next season. Yikes!

Yeah

That’s why they tried to dump Chandler. Obviously they’d look a little better if he was healthy. But betwen CP3, West, and Stojakovic, that’s 3 All-Stars right there.

and I question if West would be an all-star if he wasn’t playing with CP3, but he is a nice player.

I’ll give you CP3, West and not much else.

We're not gonna be competitive next year barring a severe brain injury by another GM.

I’d be willing to live with a triple and a single in the draft and a double with our new coach.

by Deleran on Apr 20, 2009 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm of the opinion that

we need our coach of the future now, to get the system set and allow our young players to grow into this system and not flounder. Best case we’re 2-3 years away, and if we screw around and make it 4-5 years, then we’re moving into “Kevin Martin will have to be this team’s Mitch Richmond and bring us someone in trade” territory.

So, it’s not about next year at all, it’s about setting the direction of the franchise and starting to move forward in a meaningful manner.

We have to set the direction and the system needs to be in place. We may not win that many more games next year, but it’s all about building and making sure the players are buying into the new structure.
