Around SBN: Lakers Should Trade Andrew Bynum So He Doesn't Go To Waste

On the Young Sacramento Frontcourt

For a bit of perspective on just how young the Kings' big men are, take a look at the ages of the Final Four front lines.

  • UConn: Hasheem Thabeet (22.1 y/o), Stanley Robinson (20.7 y/o) -- 21.4 years old average
  • Michigan State: Goran Suton (23.7 y/o), Delvon Roe (19.5 y/o) -- 21.6 years old average
  • UNC: Tyler Hansbrough (23.4 y/o), Deon Thompson (20.6 y/o) -- 22 years old average
  • Villanova: Dante Cunningham (21.9 y/o), Shane Clark (23.4 y/o) -- 22.6 years old average

And your Sacramento Kings ...

  • Sacramento Kings: Spencer Hawes (20.9 y/o), Jason Thompson (22.7 y/o) -- 21.8 years old average

Half the Final Four has starting front lines collectively older than Sacramento's own starting front line. Another is two months younger than that of the Kings. The fourth is five months younger than that of the Kings.

That's amazing, and something to keep in mind while our stomaches wretch.

If the Kings get Griffin, Evans or Rubio, they will be similar to Oklahoma City with it’s young talent.

Its a good point

refer back to my Post about unprepared kids getting millions to learn on the job for years, then when they’re finally ready, want multi-millions. Some of that at least could be limited.

young doesn't guarantee anything except young

doesn’t mean they’ll work out. The Draft is gambling on potential. Could be a pick or two doesn’t, then its three wasted years just as easily. Thats not cynical, its just truth, a lot of kids don’t develop like you hope,
Europe is littered with them.
I prefer adding a young vet at some point – but to do that we will need some good trade bait.

Pushing this team another step forward

Is not a wise idea at this point. If this Kings team can’t succeed as mostly presently constituted, Petrie is going to have real problems. He won’t have many attractive options to deal these guys off otherwise.

On the otherhand, this team has built a bad record on the back of a roster that didn’t work. Yes, this current roster has lost a lot of games, but, when you go back to training camp on February 20th, it’s too late to make much of a difference.

by mattman on Apr 2, 2009 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions

But that's just the thing.

NBA superstars and franchise players come out of the draft. Usually these stars are around the 1st to 3rd pick. The reason it’s so exciting is we can potentially pick that guy this summer.

"young vet"

Aren’t we building one in Hawes?

by CloudyEyes on Apr 2, 2009 7:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes

but I don’t know about two or three more years of rookies

at some point you look to add a proven younger vet (not next yr probably unless one falls into your lap)

by lietothegirls on Apr 2, 2009 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm

I’d be all for that, except the Kings don’t have any real trade bait (excluding Shock/Hawes and Martin). To pick up a proven (starter quality) younger vet, I’d think the Kings would need to take on bad contracts, and trade off K9’s expiring. I’m not sure we’d want that. Even then, you’d be hard pressed to pick up a proven young vet.

Petrie tried that with Nate Robinson and it was no deal all the way. There was also a bit of outrage on this board from the mere mention of Petrie pursuing that trade.

by CloudyEyes on Apr 2, 2009 8:40 PM PDT up reply actions

We ARE the cellar dwellers

I just don’t think the “young vet” (is that an oxymoron?) scenario will happen – we are in an organic rebuliding process.
IMHO, that means no magic bullet, no ‘underappreciated potential franchise player looking to really establish himself on a losing small market team’ type of guy will be on the roster soon.

Petrie and company will continue to assemble quality youth as well as key pieces from elsewhere, and sooner or later we will be contenders again.

I agree with you – The draft IS a gamble, but we are going to move forward for the time being with the core we have currently.
A legitimate ‘star’ aquired at draft time may hasten the process, but it will still be a process…

A bad team is OK if it's a young team!

Remember that graph Ziller did a while back? (I think he did it, anyway) Age is almost always proportional to winning percentage. Don’t fret, guys.

I'm depressed

If you add Hawes age to Thompsons , you would still have to add the age of one not quite legal hot chick before you get to mine. There is hope for the future (no not the hot chick) with the young bigs ,add in Griffin and you have me drooling (again not the hot chick).
I’m going to my rocker and take a nap.

Two last-second losses, a Wiz win, and we're almost a lock for a top 4 pick now.

When the season began, I didn’t think there was any chance we would be the worst team in the NBA, and yet there we sit. Two fewer wins than anyone else with only 8 games to go. Anyone have the date for the draft lottery?

‘The lottery is normally held during the fourth week of May. The 2008 draft lottery was held on May 20. The Chicago Bulls, Miami Heat, and Minnesota Timberwolves won the first through third picks, respectively.’
