Two fail-safe sources reveal the Kings also are contemplating turning over the sidelines to the [Ettore Messina]. Currently coaching CSKA Moscow, Messina was recently contacted by a Sacramento representative regarding interest in an interview. It's in stone Raptors president Bryan Colangelo plans to meet with Messina during the European Final Four in Berlin (Barcelona vs. CSKA, and Olympiacos vs. Panathinaikos) beginning May 1.

If this isn't official news

I don’t know what is that Natt isn’t coming back. (Not that we thought he would anyway.) But, the idea of reaching out to Messina is not a bad idea at all. I don’t know if he would succeed right away in the NBA, but then again, who knows? I’ve heard worst idea’s. Like Eric Musselman. (And I never dreamed he could be that bad.)

going to say, isn’t Vescey usually full of crap?

Much more the way I saw the search going

Lots of “leaks”, presumably from the coaches themselves, and several interviews before GP finally pulls the trigger.

Would we really start interviews

before letting Natt go? It’s obvious that we aren’t picking up Natt’s option, but wouldn’t it be a bit more classy to formally let him go before interviewing his potential replacements?

by LPKingsFan on Apr 21, 2009 7:38 AM PDT reply actions

No

I have to believe the interview would happen at the Final Four in the first week of May, where at least Petrie and probably others will be in attendance.

Natt’s option is due by May 1, and Petrie’s leaving at the end of this week. So I imagine official word on Natt will come sooner, perhaps today or Wednesday.

again about Vescey

It’s not just that, as Norsktroll mentioned, he has no idea about basketball, he’s also very, very willing to make up “sources” out of thin air and post the most blatant bull**** with credit to these “sources”, just because it sorta makes sense to him.

All this basically meaning: wait until somebody else reports anything on this.

HELL YES, interview him

C’mon guys, this shouldn’t even be an argument! During a coaching search you should interview a whole bunch of guys, and this particular guy is by many accounts a very, very good coach. The Nets and Raptors are already courting him, why shouldn’t we at least take a look?

by Citadel 29 on Apr 21, 2009 9:38 AM PDT reply actions

Hire Messina, draft Griffin

that way Petrie gets his euro fix and we get Griffin.

There has been a lot of chatter that Brian Collangelo in Toronto was interested as well and Collangelo is a smart guy. There was also talk about Collangelo bringing him in as an assistant for a couple of years.

Just goes to show we know nothing about what’s going on and are operating in an information vacuum having to rely on the east coast media even for rumors.

He is surely not a soft coach, and he surely knows how to make his teams play well….and, by the way DRAFT RUBIO!

Today on ESPN

Chris Sheridan had a story about how Mike Brown was a very deserving coach of the year candidate. One of the points he made was that he came from a strong tree in San Antonio where they trust and develop coaches. He mentioned that when the Brown wanted the Cavs to improve on offense he went to see Ettore Messina.

I think Sam Amick mentioned him as a long-shot candidate (my words not his) for the coaching job. I think that as long as Geoff Petrie makes the selection with a minimum of noise from ownership I will be happy. We have nowhere to go but up from here.

by mayfieldcol on Apr 21, 2009 1:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I've read in a few spots today

that Mike Brown seeks out other coaches for input how to improve.

How dare you think Ettore Messian is a good coach cuz he's Italian and so are you

How dare you believe such blasphemy! You’re going to burn in hell for such transgressions. Just ask the pope. He’s down the road, right?

On a serious note, this isn’t the first (or last in all likelihood) that I’ve heard Messina’s name mentioned. Bryan Colangelo has loved him for years, and who knows, maybe Messina could make Bargnani a better player than Triani or Mitchell did.

Even then, I won’t complain (even if I don’t think Messina is the ideal choice) if he is hired. And, the fact that he speaks English is an important selling point to me. What I find more intriguing is that he hasn’t just coached in the Italian league. Not a single person here has mentioned it, but this is a guy coaching a team in MOSCOW. He can coach. That isn’t the question. The question is should he coach the Kings long term. And that’s the only important question here.

Messina and Vescey

Messina – I have read nothing but good things about Messina – supposed to be the best coach in the Euroleague. My only concern about him is that he has no NBA experience even though he has years of experience as a head coach. In my opinion, the Euroleague, which I believe is the highest level of basketball in Europe is only a notch or two down from the NBA, certainly above college ball here. I am much more comfortable with Messina than I would be with the Whiz.

Vescey – Peter Vescey is the godfather of modern basketball writing. He prints a lot of rumors in general because he’s plugged in but in recent years his reputation has taken a hit because too many of the rumors he prints seem to be made up out of whole cloth. Just because it’s in Vescey’s column doesn’t mean he made it up, he’s been around for a long time and has a ton of sources.

But regarding Vescey

Some of the shit he throws is just that, and some of it is totally true. If he did vote for Vinny Del Negro as coach of the year, I wonder why, but that doesn’t mean he is a complete hack. His reputation hurt with somebody liked me who despised him during his time on NBC. But as a writer for the Post, he does a pretty good job. And, one of his best under-cover sources (if you want to call it that) is Donnie Walsh. It’s always useful to keep these types of things in mind when you, as you say BJ talk about how long Vescey’s been doing his job and how many sources he’s got, throw Vescey under the bus. The guy has been thrown under the bus his whole career, and, is still around.

On another note

Andrea Bargnani has looked LOADS better under Jay Triano. I expected the Raptors to keep Triano and have Iavaroni join as top assistant.

Anyways, I like Messina and I wouldn’t mind him coaching in Sacramento, as his credentials are great, but I would still prefer some JVG or possibly Budenholzer up in here.

Do you know how many massage parlors West Sac would have to tear down to build an arena? I’m not sure the city could take the tax revenue hit.

Interesting

I guess I wouldn’t mind it if Petrie truly believed Messina was the right man for this team.

On a side note, StR got a shout out from the Rise Guys in the morning. I think that they actually saw this fanshot in the morning because they used it to transition to the Messina subject. They said something along the lines of “if you want to get all the information about the Kings you got KHDK, and if you want even more information on the net head over to sactownroyalty.com (they got the name right).”

Looks like StR is the go-to-place for all things Kings. Great work TZ and Section.
