Lots of interesting names on the list
1-Al Thornton. Can this settle the debate whether or not he’s overrated?
5-Andrea Bargnani. Surprising.
21-Corey Maggete. Another player who seems overrated, I never would have guess he’d be on this list.
30-Jerryd Bayless.

Bayless can't shoot
(not yet anyway)
A cautionary warning to those who might like some of the guards in this draft (there are several high on the lists) who don’t shoot well.

His Shot
Isnt the reason for a lack of playing time in Portland. They have a logjam of young talent and quite simply don’t want Bayless to “learn on the fly” when the team and City feels they are legit contenders this year. ..I wouldnt be surprised at all if Bayless has a strong off-season and starts next year.
Quite frankly……I’d take Bayless (and his jumper) over Beno RIGHT NOW!

I would too based on price and potential
but he may never develop a decent shot ala Larry Hughs and others. Something to be watched.

Agreed...
Completely agree with you there… Its a crap-shoot to try and figure out which guiys are actually gonna have the work-ethic to improve their games (aka develop a shot) in the offseason….But looking at Bayless and how he’s developed his body (Similar to a young Billups,) something tells me a work ethic with this kid isnt gonna be a problem-

almost no one comes into the league a complete player
That kid is going to be money-in-the-bank in a year or two. Efficiency rating for limited minutes during a kid’s rookie year isn’t a great indicator of his prospects me thinks.

He has played the worst of all the lottery picks
And by worst I mean least.

Statistics can be made to prove anything
Because if this was based on total amount of three-point shots taken compared with rebounds grabbed by 6’10" players, Donte’ would be in Peja’s league.

Wouldn't that table make more sense
If it were sorted by Wp48? In my opinion, Thornton shouldn’t really be number one on that list, unless I’m reading it incorrectly.

Like anything
It’s a list that’s pretty subjective. I don’t really agree with many of Berri’s opinions or conclusions. This is just yet another reason why.

Yeah, I don't think I buy this
Don’t know much about wins produced as a statistic, and every player on that list certainly has his flaws. But it isn’t a list of the 45 players that you would least like to have, so what is its value? Does it tell us that Bargniani needs to board more? That Thornton shouldn’t be launching threes? We know these things. We also know that 7 footers with 3pt range and freak athletes with jump-shooting touch don’t come around every day, so sometimes we just let them learn the hard way.

Tells me nothing about Donte Greene

Not many surprises there in particular. That list basically should filter out the players who are only playing garbage minutes to really get a look at the true culprits. If you look at it, that list can be separated into 2 categories: known chuckers (ala Ricky Davis, Tim Thomas, and Marbury who have always had questionable trigger fingers), and guys who play limited roles on their teams, who when they are lucky enough to get on the floor are a little itchy to “do something” when they’re out there, thus chucking up questionable shots like Donte and Bayliss. But these guys get a pass because they’re rookies, they may eventually deserve to be on this ist, but not yet imo.

I don't see Doratio Kane on the list
At least he had a good season.

I like Dave Berri's stuff and read him weekly
Anybody who is familiar with his work will know that almost all rookies are going to be ranked low because there is no prior work to base his stats on. One of Berri’s main points is that once a player has matured, reached his highest level then the level of a player’s production doesn’t vary much and based on a roster of veteran’s past results it;s fairly simple to project the teams results.
Even John Hollinger’s PER tends to rank rookies lower than vets, take Derrick Rose for example whose PER for the season is 16.05 and is ranked 19th for PER for point guards or that there are only 13 rookies with a PER above 15, which is average in Hollinger’s system.
For the most part, rookie stats in most systems don’t tell you much because there are so many factors in how they get their minutes. If they get a lot of minutes a la JT they are almost always on a bad team. They may be only getting garbage time minutes or coming in when a starter is hurt and they may not be ready to play major minutes and don’t do as well as they will in the future.
Just because evaluating rookies doesn’t tend to be predictive of their future performance doesn’t mean that statistical analysis doesn’t have value. Just for comparison’s sake Hollinger has Donté has ranked last, at #329 out of players who had enough minutes to qualify for ranking. Which would show me that there is some correlation between the metrics. The bottom line is that the stats tell us what we saw with our own eyes this year and that is, é, is not a very good basketball player……………..yet.

He's a very good basketball player
He just didn’t show it at the NBA level, yet.

Donte Greene was pretty awful this season. Really bad. But he’s young and inexperienced.

Give it time
Given that 16 months ago we were drooling over the idea of getting Klieza from denver we should be happy. The trade brought us a rookie that needed time and B-Jax who did wonders this season plus a pick this year. I would imagine that Donte will be able to do more next year and get even better. the team will be young but at least he will feel comfortable with what is going on.
This list was a little strange, I though Bargs was much better than 5th and was able to win Toronto a few more games this year. The good news is I know 17 wins is the low point and that it will get better.
