Looks like they're gonna be well over the cap.

They may have trouble improving over the summer and will have to rely totally on their guys getting healthy.

by Deleran on Apr 25, 2009 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I wonder alot what the Kings are gonna do with K9

If the economy was good, they’d obviously trade him, but maybe at this point we just hang on to him and let him expire?

by Deleran on Apr 25, 2009 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions

He adds a ton of flexibility

Basically having him around next year adds the possibility of trading for a legit player without giving up any core pieces. Of course the Maloofs have to be willing to take on that contract we’d be getting in theory, which is the big question, but for the first time, I think we should be looking forward to having K9’s contract on the books for next year.

If we use it, we get the chance to add significant value from some team worse of financially than us (if those exist).

I’m pretty sure they have no cap room, which is why they are relying on vet minimum, late first round and early 2nd draft picks. All their cap room is tied up in Timmie, Manu and Parker.

The Spurs will have MAJOR cap room in 2010

They only have Parker, Duncan, Ian Mahinmi, and George Hill signed thru 2010. I can see someone like Chris Bosh or Joe Johnson going to SA to be with Duncan, Parker, and likely Ginobili and continue the winning tradition. The Spurs will be fine.

Anybody else think

In a couple years Spurs will be one of the worst teams in the league?

by Aykis16 on Apr 25, 2009 2:14 PM PDT reply actions

I agree

but its easier to add talent when that talent only has to do well-defined things. Duncan does so much for them. He controls the defensive glass, he guards the basket, takes the opponents best big out of the game. On offense, whenever they need to, they dump the ball in and he commands a double team, meaning they need fewer playmakers (though they have some).

Post-Duncan, the Spurs will not have those built in advantages, so they’ll need more dynamic players. Finding those is hard, though of course the Spurs have been great at it.

They could trade Duncan and/or Manu in KG like fashion

to some team looking for a 2-3 year window and retool very quickly. I doubt that happens though. Think Duncan has earned the right to retire a Spur.

So, a gradual decline and sharp drop when Duncan retires is likely and after their long, long run of success, to be expected.

They didn't still have a Tony Parker

after trading KG. They also didn’t have the proceeds of a Manu trade. If the Spurs were to trade Duncan and Manu over the next 9 months and got anything like what Minny got, they’d be bad for a very short time. Also, I wasn’t disagreeing with Aykis, just adding to the discussion.

Again, though. I don’t think there’s a chance in hell of them making those trades.

Tony Parker, Tony Parker, Tony Parker

French and all is starting to make me re- think Rubio. Could he do that for us given time?

Does anyone know if they still allow hand checking in the Euroleague? If they do all his taking it to the rim, splitting the defense etc is even more impressive.

1) Let’s get Rubio first
2) then remember how badly Parker struggled early in his career
3) patience, patience, patience

then yes, I think theoretically Parker, maybe not as quick, but even more of a playmaker for other people, is what people envision for Rubio.

One thing to remember BJ

It’s actually somewhat difficult to get into the lane in part because it’s so clogged all the time. Scoring in there is not necessarily easier than the NBA; but the lane is so much wider that more players end up being down there.

The wider lane makes it harder to have a dominant post presence on offense

the lane and the legal zone, with no defensive 3 second rule. Right? So, it’s more packed with defensive players, not offensive, which I think is what you were saying.

Also explains why Euro bigs tend to have good jump shots.

Parker is 1 of the quickest guards in the league

Rubio is not near as fast as parker and isnt very athletic. I like Rubio 2 but hes not going to be like Parker, Parker uses his speed to get to the basket and Rubio isnt going to be able to do that as good as Parker. Parker was in the top 3 for guards at scoring around the basket in the league

in this situation, I’d rather see a no call and a league fine. That call late in a close game could change the out come. And if it was Garnett or Casell doing the big balls dance it wouldn’t have been called.

I don't think any team that has Joe Johnson as their best player is going very far in the playoffs

JJ is good, but not good enough to carry a team in the postseason by himself. He’ll get to witness Wade do that first hand, though.

unfortunately

the Atlanta model is probably the direction we’re going, barring extraordinary good fortune. Having lots of good players rather than a great one or two. Historically that’s been a tough way to win deep in the playoffs, but you play the hand you’re dealt.

Who was calling for Scott to be fired for “under-performing” with CP3, West an aging Peja and an injured Chandler? Are you also calling for Sloan’s head for being an 8 seed and looks like a 5 games and out team, with Deron, Carlos, Milsap, Okur, and AK47?

Hornets only had 5 players play 65+ – Butler, Paul, West, Posey, Armstrong.
Compare to the
Jazz – 8 players played 65+ games-Brewer, Korver, Milsap, Knight, Okur, Miles, Williams and Kirilenko

Chandler and Boozer both played less than 50. Very similar seasons.

with Milsap, Kirilenko, Okur, Korver, Brewer vs. Peja, Chandler and … who? Butler? Posey? Armstrong? Marks?. I’d say the drop off from Chandler to Armstrong is greater than the drop off from Boozer to Milsap too.

I still say, very similar seasons.

I don't think anyone should blame Scott

especially with the way the front office is. They tried to trade one of their key players at the deadline then had it vetoed. And the only reason they attempted the trade was for financial purposes. Basically, management said winning wasn’t important, we need the money. I’d play with a little less effort too.

When we had Artest

I was seriously hoping for an Artest/Thomas or Abdur-Rahim or Moore for Kirilenko trade. The Jazz get legit cap relief and Sacramento gets a team player, an offensive facilitator, and one of the best help defenders in the league.

Andrei Kirilenko is one of my favorite players in the game because he has such a complete game offensively and defensively, as Panzerfaust said. I think his recession is due to being less involved in the offense (or is it just disliking Sloan?) because of Deron Williams, Carlos Boozer, and Mehmet Okur who score more and have the ball in their hands more often then Kirilienko.. make him part of the vocal point on offense and he will play like he once did on both sides of the court.

Not to mention that Kirilenko seems to be more effective as a 4 then a 3.

I really don't like the makeup of this Portland team

I know Pritchard is a genius, and there are 10 future all-stars on the roster based on the hype, but they have one very good, probably great player in Roy and then…what?

LMA doesn’t assert himself at all, they don’t have a #2 option right now. Rudy Fernandez looks like a very, very good role player that isn’t afraid of the moment, and everyone else has been bad. (Outlaw had some good moments in the first half tonight.)

he’s getting pushed around by Scola and Yao. They really need one more stud. Oden to develop, but he’s just not ready yet, or Durant would’ve been nice.

Rockets are a real tough matchup for them

Roy and LMA are your two best scorers and the Rockets can run Artest/Battier at Roy and Scola/Yao at LMA. The SFs and the Cs for Portland have not risen to the occasion and PG has been a wash at best.

John Salmons probably would’ve helped them in this series.

On the plus side they are the youngest team in the league, aren’t they?

This season was crappy enough

Don’t need Cassell’s dancing to be an actual highlight.

Must win game for NO

and they’re down 21-8 in the 1st. Not good.

36-15 Nuggs after one

and the Hawks up 44-25 in the 2nd. Blow-out day in the NBA

Correction

Denver up 58. Were we ever down 58 this season?? That’s just insane

58 in the Mothernatting playoffs.

Byron Scott might not be a coach for much longer.

I think it's safe to say that NO quit

Final game will be interesting. See what kind of pride they have, or desire to keep their coach.
