If the Maloof's fire Petrie

Would be they astute enough to hire Lindsey as the GM? Please.

John Whisenant

He’s done a great job as GM of the Monarchs…wait, I seem to be experiencing a sense of deja vu.

Billy King

Maybe he’ll give K-9 an extension. He did give him the contract he has now.

I'm curious

I want to hear the opinions of the people who voted “Yes”. Not to attack or anything, but since they are in the minority I’d like to know more about their views.

Apart from Udrih and Moore, I can’t see any other significant mistake made by Petrie. All his others moved were at least good (honestly who could expect K9 that bad, I still remember him in my fantasy team when he was averaging 15-10 for some weeks)

I assume most of us would like to see a smoother rebuilding process with more wins and less 20+ point losses. Was/is this possible to achieve? Imo it’s very difficult mainly because of two factors 1) Star(s) 2) Talented young players to trade or develop. Kings have none of the above. Martin is close-to-star and we only have 2 talents. Some examples that come in mind:

- Take a look at the best, the Celtics. They turned it all around in one season. They had a star (Pierce) and plenty of youngsters to trade (Gomes, Telfair, Al Jeff, Green for KG and Delonte West (+ Szczerbiak) and pick #5 in a deep draft which ended up to be Jeff Green).

- The Nets almost made the playoffs in their first rebuilding year. They kept Carter and traded one of the best PGs in the league (Kidd) for Devin Harris. They had something valuable to trade and something valuable to carry them.

- The Sixers used to have AI, they gave him for Andre Miller + developed Iguodala.

“Apart from Udrih and Moore, I can’t see any other significant mistake made by Petrie.”

Noccioni trade was kind of bad from a rebuilding standpoint. I can see it was good from a short term, financial view. The Douby pick was horrific in hindsight.

Horrific?

Nothing you do outside the lottery can be described as horrific, in my opinion.

by Tom Ziller on Apr 26, 2009 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Douby was an excellent player in college

he was not a horrific pick, if he was picked in the lottery then yes he was.

He did say in hindsight

Interesting thing is we hear a lot about Rondo going 2 picks after Douby, but look at the 4 picks before Douby:

15. Cedric Simmons – NOK
16. Rodney Carney – CHI
17. Shawne Williams – IND
18. Oleksiy Pecherov – WAS

Not a deep draft.

What the deuce!?!

I am out of town for a few days, and I return to find Petrie’s employment being put in to question? Are you kidding me? This makes me feel more uncomfortable about the direction of our team than anything else. Sure, the Beno signing looks like a bust at this point, and Moore just didnt fit our team, but those really are small mistakes. 5 million dollar a year mistakes dont cripple a team, 12 million dollar a year mistakes do.
Petrie is without a doubt a top 5 GM in the NBA. I really need to hear why 5 people (currently) think he needs to be fired, and who they would like to see replace him.

Wait....Why is everybody clapping? Everyone around me is clapping.... I guess I should be clapping too... GO LAKERS!!! I hate living in So Cal

You can't make everyone happy

I began sending out thank you notes to people for showing up for informational meetings that were completely voluntary. The people that attended were customers, not employees. The response has been 85% positive, but 15% have contacted me to say that the effort of saying “thank you” is a waste of time and money.

If you set up a stand in front of your house offering free ice cream, 10-15% of the people would not like the flavors offered (even if you offered every flavor), or the fact that you didn’t offer diabetic ice cream (even if you did), or they would complain about the lack of chocolate-covered waffle cones. This is why gaining 49% of the popular vote in an election is considered by some to be a “mandate.”

My guess is that most of these folks weren’t around prior to 1999, and they have little appreciation for what Petrie built the last time around. Nor do they understand that what comes up, must come down (unless you have David Robinson and still get the #1 pick the year that Tim Duncan comes out, or you’re in a position to throw a crap load of money at every turn like the Lakers).

The need to be on the far left or far right of an argument also feeds this phenomenon. Certainly, Petrie has made good and bad calls over the years. And on the bulk of his work, his employment status should nearly be beyond reproach. But he is the GM of the worst team in the NBA right now, so his moves over the next few months (draft picks, coaching selection) are critical to how his tenure is ultimately reviewed. Question him? Certainly. Fire him? Ludicrous.

The funny thing is, his contract is up at the end of next year, at which time he will be 62 years old. My bet is that he retires after next season.

I hope Petrie gets another extention

like two or three years more would be cool. I would not want to switch GMs in the middle of a rebuilding phase, nor would I like to see GM hopeful Jason Levien take the reigns yet.

good point there, Section

with his health problems, I agree Petrie is to retire and spend time in Portland with his grandkids, he may take Jerry West consultant status but his current job is to end within a year or two or three.

you best line:

I like how the people who voted yes

Aren’t voicing their opinions. Which leads me to believe they don’t really have any opinions. Or Ailene Voisin is creating multiple accounts on Sactown Royalty to add controversy so she can write a story about how many fans want Petrie out.

by Aykis16 on Apr 26, 2009 2:17 PM PDT reply actions

Voted No

At this point, despite a lot of questionable decisions in recent years, Petrie deserves a chance to right the ship. I think the real decision comes a year from now. Petrie needs to pick the right coach, his first pick in the draft has to make an immediate impact and the team has to win at least 25-30 games next season and end the season with a sense of hope for the following year.

As an unabashed Petrie supporter,

I agree with you 100%. Most of his “equity” has evaporated, and he needs to nail the two choices as you noted.

The only critique I have about GP is that the Kings delayed rebuilding for too long

but with that said I’m not even sure if that was his decision to make. I agree with you that he likely may retire after his contract is up and I have no confidence in the Maloofs to choose his successor if Muss and Reggie are examples of their skill at selecting “Basketball people.”

I think the coaching decision will finalize the timing of retirement

After two big swings and misses in the coaching department this third choice is critical because if the Kings can have the worst record in the league and they get, say Whisenant as Coach with the Maloofs fingerprints all over the decision – then Geoff Petrie should quit or as his usefulness as GM will have him effectively retired.

The other issue with GP are the big $ signings of Webber, Bibby and MIller and potentially Bonzi Wells (let’s leave out Cisco Garcia and Beno Udrih). Small market teams have to overpay to keep big name quality, and he has discarded Bibby’s and Millers’ last 1 1/2 years and Webber would still be here if he didn’t get that trade, but they need to be mentioned in the discussion.

and could possibly have been parlayed into a good young player/pick at some point

with a little more patience. I’m solidly in the NO category, but it hasn’t gone well for a few years.

Both for him and for the franchise this year and next are critical, we can’t afford any big missess. My only real concern is for the team of course, not his legacy but they’re bound together tightly right now.

I’m worried about Petrie’s handling of the cap — particularly the recent contracts given to Udrih + Garcia in addition to the acquisition of Nocioni — there’s a lot of things that I love about Petrie but his handling of the cap has shaken my confidence in him.
