Kevin Martin: Out Against Phoenix

From Melody Gutierrez:

Kevin Martin will not play tonight against the Phoenix Suns because of a sore left ankle. It is the same ankle that has given Martin so many problems this season.

Jason Richardson breathes a sigh of relief.

So...

the funny thing is that after we lose almost every game left, we would probably still get like the 5 draft pick. Only this would happen to a kings fan (maybe the clippers); in a weak draft where there is 1 legit player, we already have 2 young guns whom are already contributing at the same position, and we will have the 5th pick…..sign I hope free agency goes better………..(even though i know it wont…)

by shadowchicken on Apr 3, 2009 4:26 PM PDT reply actions

Umm... no

assuming we stay in last place, which is highly likely, then the lowest we could possibly pick is 4th. The draft lottery only picks the first 3 picks, with picks 4-14 going in order based on record. So if we are in last place then we have the most chances to get the number 1 pick and overall we’re like 50-75% to pick in the top two. Since the lottery only picks those first three, then only three teams would be able to jump ahead of us, automatically giving us the 4th pick

Sorry, but your wrong

Sorry buddy, but your wrong. The 16 playoff teams are seeded in the draft based on their record. The remaining 17 teams are lottery teams, with a percentage. Obviously the top 3 losing teams have a higher percentage to get a great pick, but that isn’t always the case, hence Orlando a couple years ago, Utah when they should of gotten the 4th pick, but dropped to 6th, and San Antonio when they got Tim Duncan. So, if you finish 4th, the lowest you could drop is 17th, but it is very unlikely.

by MercedesC32AMG on Apr 3, 2009 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions

The remaining 17 teams?

There is 14 in the lottery currently. The way the lottery works is this: If you’re not a top 3 team, the only way you can you jump up in position is by finishing in the top 3.

If you finish with the 6th worst record, youre automatically slotted for the 6th pick unless 2 or 3 teams below you finish in the top 3 (very unlikely). So, to sum this up, if you have the 6th worst record, the worst you can do is finish with the 9th overall pick.

by pookeyguru on Apr 3, 2009 10:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep to take it a step farther

If you have the 6th worst record, the only places you could end up picking are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th.

So since I'm drunk and slightly belligerent, here's my less than nice response

There are 30 teams. 16 go to the playoffs, 14 in the lottery. For those lottery teams your record determines your chances of getting the first pick. However, ping pong balls are only drawn for the FIRST THREE picks. Then, from picks 4 to 14, it goes in order by record. So the worst you can drop is three spots. If we finish with the worst record in the league then the worst pick we’ll get is the 4th. And that’s only if three teams luck out and get to pick ahead of us. We stand no chance of dropping to the end of the lottery. If the team with the 14th worst record (which would be the best record for all lottery teams) were to luck out and get the first pick, it only moves us down one, to pick number 2. Then, if another team below us drew pick 2 we’d move down to number 3. And if yet another team drew pick 3 we’d move down to pick number 4, where we’d stay because no more ping pong balls are chosen. And by the way, you’re examples suck ass. San Antonio was the third worst team in the league when they drafted Duncan. Utah never picked 6th, but they did pick 3rd in the 2005 draft when the got Deron Williams, but they were the 4th worst in the league so they moved up one spot. And as far as the Orlando one, which I assume you mean to be 2004 when the got Howard, they had the worst record in the league.

So don’t tell me I’m wrong, jackass. You’re wrong. In fact, the only thing you got right was the number of playoff teams. Everything else was terrible. You were wrong in how you think the draft lottery works, as well as how many lottery teams there are. And each of your examples to back up your claims were way off. Research dude, it’s not that fucking hard.

Is The Ankle fixable?

Don’t know if anyone has any inside scoop, but I would like to know how bad K-Mart’s ankle really is. Will he recoup over the summer? Permanent damage? It’s a concern.

by amonk81 on Apr 3, 2009 11:39 PM PDT reply actions

From what I've seen ...

Rest will help it. Like a few months worth. You may remember that he came back strong after All-Star weekend and Natt’s Week Off.

by Tom Ziller on Apr 4, 2009 7:01 AM PDT up reply actions

In the pregame interview with Peaches

Martin said he was going to change his off season routine and take more time to let the ankle heal. He also said that the pain was constant, and the level was at 3 after the GSW game. With 10 being perfect and 1 being bad. Also, he said a good day it was at 7. (paraphrased by me)

Also, remember that he was part of the Select Team last summer, so last year he didn’t have as much time off as usual to rest.

Thanks for passing this along

If it’s still that bad, he probably should shut it down for the season and start that rest now. So, he can be 100% early enough in the summer to still make some necessary improvements to his game.
