Tomorrow Will Be Better, I Swear

Tonight, the Kings face the Lakers. Sacramento feels a lot different than it did five years ago. We'll scream obscenities at Kobe, boo in Phil Jackson's ear and give the ol' BEAT L-A! BEAT L-A! chant some effort ... but it's not the same. The Lakers will probably be in the Finals; the Kings will probably finish with the worst record in the league. It's not the same any more.

But we'll be back, beating L.A. and winning 60 games and getting to the playoffs and winning postseason series. We'll be back.

In the meantime, to avoid thinking about the unfortunate state of our team, please watch this 10-minute Ricky Rubio reel set to "Free Bird" (HQ here) ...

... or watch Blake Griffin dunk for basically three minutes straight (HQ).

Tomorrow will be better. The Kings are coming for you.

watching both those videos, I had two thoughts

(1) Rubio has more upside as the kind of “special” player that changes the entire NBA landscape — in the Spain-USA games last summer, he was arguably the single most compelling player on the court; and

(2) I could totally see GP picking Rubio with the first pick, shocking the world.

I've seen that for months

If Rubio enters the draft and is available when we pick he will be a King, end of story.

He’s flashy and fun to watch and will be a great PG in a high speed offense

Flashy and fun is right.

He seems like a guy that can bring excitement and energize the fan base in the same way that Jason Williams did in his rookie season. And he can play defense.

Absolutely

Maybe I’m just totally waffling because I was sold on Griffin before, but now I’m kinda hoping we don’t get the first pick just so we aren’t forced to choose Griffin simply because he’s the only “can’t miss” talent in the draft.

I can also see Petrie taking Rubio with the first pick and I’d wholeheartedly agree with him.

If they really really really want Blake Griffin then it's possible

the better scenario is us getting the 1 and the Clips getting the 2. Assuming the Clips want Griffin we can swap the picks and nab Eric Gordon from them as well

“And how is this possible?” you ask. Easy, it’s the Clippers

my other thought is that it's not an offensive-minded PF's game any more

It’s a playmaker’s game.

All of the impact players today are playmakers except for D-Howard. And I don’t see Blake ever making the defensive impact upon a game that D-Howard makes.

What makes Rubio so compelling, especially for this team

is that he is a great leader. Yes, there may be a need for rebounding or interior scoring, which a Blake Griffin would definitely bring, but Ricky Rubio is not only an amazing distributer, a good defensive stopper, but he’s also a good leader at a young age. This team has needs for all of that, but the Kings especially NEEDS A LEADER. It doesn’t matter how much you dislike Rubio or like Griffin more, it is obvious that one of the biggest needs of the 2008-2009 Kings is someone who can provide leadership on the court. That’s why I want Rubio so bad.

RR is good but,

How many top flight point guards other than Tony Parker have won championships lately? I can’t really think of any. Besides, this is a pg heavy draft so they should find a pretty good one later in the draft.

by supamang08 on Apr 7, 2009 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I believe that

it is a time of a bit of transition between older point guards and the younger ones; i.e. Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, Chauncey Billups, Allen Iverson to Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Tony Parker, and potentially Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook. Before Paul and Williams retire they’ll win a championship as the main cog on their team.

Went to the Finals and lost.

I don’t buy the top-flight PGs not winning championships argument. The deep-PG-draft argument, on the other hand, is valid.

Kidd and Iverson

Both nearly led their respective teams to the promised land, and neither squad had the talent to win out, so it’s hard to say that elite point guards don’t win.

Nash’s Suns though.. I don’t know how to explain it but they should have done so much more together.

The Kings don't really need rebounders

they need people like Ricky that can defend on the perimeter. Defense starts at the guards.

Rubio's playing in Europe so our expectations may be inflated...

…but the same thing is true for college players here so it’s not like Griffin is going to be able to fly to the rim like he does on a regular basis now without getting thrashed.

Sure Rubio’s not going to be able to make all those ridiculous passes in the NBA, but the fact that he has the vision to pick those players out while on the run is a very good sign. Sure he might not be able to make all those steals or stifle players like he does in Europe, but the fact that he gives as much effort on defense as he does is also a very good sign. The fact that a decent portion of those highlights came against our gold medal team is a good indication that he’s certainly good enough to have a significant impact on the NBA.

The more I see Rubio the more I want him on this team.

That could be a deal breaker but until he declares it's a moot point.

Please don’t compare Yao’s international acclaim (primarily China) with Ricky’s, it’s apples and oranges. If you want to see how much acclaim Rubio will get, both love and money compare him to the Euro stars like Pau or Barnari.

Maybe KFFCE can tell us how many ads, both print and television the Euro NBA players are involved with over there. How many Gasol (or pick your Euro star) jerseys do you see people wearing on the streets of Europe? Frankly I have no idea but I’m guessing if people wear jerseys over there they are probably soccer jerseys and if they are wearing NBA jerseys in Europe they’re probably Kobe’s.

well

The Kings would “only” pay 500,000 $ for his buyout (they cannot pay more)….exactly the amount gained with the Cassel trade….
Maybe Rubio will not perform at Chris Pauls’s level…and he won’t be as Deron Williams or Arenas in his first year…but he has the skills to be an all-star pg soon…while I doubt Griffin will never be at an all-star level in his role…

by Panzerfaust on Apr 7, 2009 12:13 PM PDT reply actions

I believe the point has been made before about highlight reels

don’t put too much stock into them. We could probably put together a highlight reel of Beno over the past 2 yrs that would rival RR’s.

Both players are young and the sky is the limit for both of them. Between the odds in the lottery and whether or not Rubio even enters this draft, there’s probably less than a 15% chance that GP will even have a choice in the matter. So, I still say that the player that we get with the Houston pick will decide whether we did well or great in this draft.

this is an important point, but...

…I honestly don’t think you could put together a highlight reel of Beno over the past two years that could include a comparable number of clips of Beno exhibiting RR’s court vision. I don’t think you’d get there if you included clips from practices, too.

Are you serious?

Rubio isn’t going to be good because he’s skinny? He’s an 18-year-old point guard. If you’ve seen a second of Ricky Rubio on the court, you know that he doesn’t need to out-muscle anyone to be thoroughly effective.

No, neither do I. Vinnie was selected 29th overall, as a 23 year old, and came in with zero hype, and modest pedigree.

Griffin is proven and will be a complete immediate contributor… Lest we all forget that the last time we had the opportunity to have the #1 pick in the draft- it was with one of the worst draft classes ever!!! we had to choose between Pervis Ellison , Danny Ferry, and Sean Elliot…. Griffin

Griffin is a man, Rubio is just a boy. In the video Rubio looked SLOW too. I haven’t seen him in person but in the NBA looking at the video his first step is too slow. He doesn’t have the explosiveness Griffin does. And if Griffin has shooters (K-Mart), Oklahoma would have dominated UNC. He played SO SMART in that game. He knew sometimes he had to score before the double so he would. He does what he wants.

by BucksForever on Apr 8, 2009 8:44 AM PDT reply actions

the difference is

Rubio doesn’t have to be lightning quick. He doesnt rely on being the main scoring threat on the floor to be of value. He elevates the game of those around him.

As far as not being able to make it in the NBA because he is too slow i can only guide your viewing apparatus to the highlights of Ricky Rubio Esquire vs the dream team. As a 17 year old kid he seemed to handle the pressure and pace of NBA level competition very handily.

Griffin is not some Tim Duncan type you are going to surround with shooters and work the ball in and out of the low post with. He is going to be a hell of a player. He will make someone proud, but for mine Sacramento needs a PG.

Not to mention that JT finishes like a freight train. You see how often Rubio ran a 3 on 2 break to perfection and it ends in a dunk for someone else. That kind of thing with donte kmart JT cisco etc would be so fantastic. I guarantee that he’d already run a break a thousand times better than beno.
