Before the Kings-Lakers game earlier tonight, Petrie told me he planned to attend the Euroleague Final Four in Berlin May 1-3, but believed he was traveling overseas about a week earlier. I am absolutely certain that, among his many duties, he will be gathering information about Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio, the teenage whiz who also unfortunately happens to be under contract to DKV Joventut. We can keep hearing that Rubio is trying to buy out his contract and enter the NBA, but we'll see.

Do work Petrie!
You better go all Godfather on DKV Joventut’s GM and make him an offer he can’t refuse to get Ricky outta that contract

the Maloofs might not have ties.... but NIKE does.
Rumor has it NIKE has developed a new Rubio shoe that they are ready to launch along with his NBA debut.
Hey
If Rubio gets his buyout reduced, and Nike pays it, then good for Rubio.

Good for us too
I just see no way in which Petrie doesn’t pick Rubio, even if its with the number 1 pick

You see no way?
Better get your eyes checked and keep your cool.
Reality is, BG is the consensus #1 and it’s Unlikey he is passed by by Anyone. Emphasis.
Now with the number 2……

Reynolds
has said time and again that BG will be the first pick of the draft no matter who is #1. I am assuming he is including the Kings in that statement.
So, do we believe him?
Does he have any reason to say this without really believein it?
What reason would there be for subterfuge?
The one thing I do know – based on experience – is that GP doesn’t give a rats ass about “consensus.”
Now, I certainly do not know if BG is going to be a franchise-type player, but my gut instinct after watching him play is probably no.
Guess we will all know who is right in The Great Pookey – LTG BG Debate soon enough.
Reynolds has said that Griffin is the consensus number 1
but Reynolds is not Petrie. Petrie says nothing other than obscure metaphors. It also has something to do with the fact that we’ve all known for awhile that Griffin is coming out this year. Rubio’s been kind of unknown
www.mancancook.net
May be a little early
to be discussing a consensus #1 pick possibilities.
Private work outs and pre-draft camps could change a lot.
Last year at this time Beasley was the consensus #1. It wasn’t until the last 2 weeks or so that another PG (Rose) slipped into the top of the board.

Reynolds talked about BG a bit during the [Redacted] game
It sounded to me like he thinks BG will be an all-star but not a franchise player.

An All-Star but not a 'franchise player' (?)
I don’t know where we’re setting the bar
but based on JT and Hawes out of college – where would thier ceilings be?

They were not #1 picks
the expectations for BG or any #1 will be – and should be – much, much higher.
Reynolds on the Rise Guys this morning
Said that Griffin was the guy that you take at #1 if the draft were today, and that there would be plenty of minutes to go around for him Hawes and JT.

That's Jerry hyping up the draft
It’s the exact same thing he probably said last night during the telecast 214. Alot of this stuff will get regurgitated for a while. There just isn’t enough new information out there otherwise.

Of course
but if he said “if the draft were today” that’s leaving an opening for if/when Rubio declares isn’t it? Other wise he would have said, "Griffin is the guy you take #1 period.

Absolutely
Reynolds only talks about players that have declared for the draft, so as others enter the landscape could certainly change.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
Oh okay
And, for whatever it’s worth, we might learn more about each player this time around rather than trying to handicap who JR thinks is the real pick.

Here's how it happens
If we get the number 1 I see Petrie trading down to the 2 to get something good in return for whoever has the second pick. Petrie doesn’t care who everyone says he should pick, he takes who he wants. Remember last year when he drafted some unknown kid out of a smaller school and that kid turned into one of the best rookies in the league? Or what about when he drafed some Serbian dude with a funny name who turned into one of the best three point shooters in the league? If Petrie likes Rubio, and can get Rubio, he will. Period. End of story.
www.mancancook.net
Yeah
while I think your previous comment is a bit presumptuous. I also agree with you that Petrie is more prone to take a liking to Rubio.
Not sure where this Consensus is coming from. By a bunch of draft boards that haven’t taken team needs into consideration yet? Reynolds’ word over Petrie’s silence? Not exactly my idea of a consensus pick.

Rubio led both of them I think.

Right
which makes the “Blake Griffin: Consensus #1 overall pick” statement all the more puzzling. Not that we are NBA GM’s or anything, but then again, neither is Jerry Reynolds, or whoever runs DX, nbadraft.net, etc.

When Jerry talks about a consensus number 1
I think he’s talking about NBA teams in general.
He is widely regarded as the number 1 pick. He will be a solid NBA player. Rubio, on the other hand, has not declared and is also somewhat of a risky pick. He’s a bit of an unknown and some teams would be scared to take him too high for fear of him being another Bargnani.
You may think I’m being presumptuous but is it really that hard to see Petrie taking Rubio number 1?
www.mancancook.net

Don't think Reynolds can really discuss a Rubio until he
declares. Reynolds is not “just” a media guy, he’s also a member of the team’s front office.

which is why Griffin isn’t a true consensus number 1 pick.

Not puzzling at all
If Mikki were still our starting PF, do you think that Griffin wouldn’t have won all those polls. As it is, Rubio won the last poll by 5%. The people on this site are voting with their hearts and not their heads. GM’s decisions affect their careers, so their not so easily swayed.

Precisely correct with the Mikki analogy
and that local popular opinion will sway towards team needs. With that in mind, the national “consensus” is not team-specific. This community is pretty knowledgeable about all things Kings. So it’s endorsement (in poll results) of a player in many ways can better reflect team-specific needs than generalized, national player rankings.
Regardless of what teams should do, (team needs vs best player available), team-needs never go away, and will forever be present in the face of decision making. If there was a SG of equal measure to Griffin and Rubio, do you think that he would rank as highly on our draft board when we already have Kevin Martin? IMO, no. Not when you can kill two birds with one stone by picking up Griffin or Rubio.
Plus I don’t think Petrie matches the career-concerned GM stereotype.

why
wont the maloofs just buy out RR’s contract for him and just reduce the amount in his NBA contract? I would love if NIKE does it for us, but if not why not Maloofs? RR will make the team better, and hell get me to go to a game or two (i do live in Long Beach so it’d have to be a road trip)
It's been said a million times already
but rules mandate that the Maloofs can only put forth 500,000 to Rubio’s buyout, and nothing more.

Would Wash or Clippers draft Rubio #2 or #3?
The odds aside, if Griffin actually goes #1, would the Wizards or the Clippers pick a PG as their first round pick? Might they pick for need by going with Thabeet or Harden? I guess what I’m asking is “Could Rubio fall to #4?”.
