Shock makes David Thorpe's All-Rookie Third Team
"Jason Thompson, Kings: Has averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds in 48 starts (77 games overall so far), showing star quality in a dozen games. A likely breakout candidate next season." - David Thorpe, ESPN.com
At first, I thought JT could've made at least second team, but looking at the list...That's quite a list of rookies. The 2008 rookie class is shaping up to be quite an impressive group.

Shock would have gotten there
If it wasn’t for so many 2007 rookies being on the list too. (Keep in mind that Oden, Fernandez and Gasol were all drafted a year earlier.)

I still think
How many games has Oden played? Like half of what JT has and he still on the 3rd team….JT in 3 years all star…
No shot a JT
but that compares to Griffin who will likely be a Rookie of the Year candidate

What does Griffin have to do with this list?
unless you are taking a shot at JT. I also wouldn’t expect Griffin to be picked #12.

Maybe
LTTG is just saying that Griffin would immediately bring a level of noteriety to this team that Shock couldn’t have no matter how well he played this season. And maybe hype has some value in the NBA.
Hype
certainly has value when the NBA is handing out personal awards. But a 6’4" suave Spanish white chocolate wins championships. That’s science.
How tall is Griffin again?

Same argument could be made for Rubio
so, No. I don’t think that’s what he was saying.

Yep, the same argument could be made for Rubio
Should he have commented twice to make one point?
This isn’t a BG v. RR debate. You’re probably looking for any other post up on StR right now.
I may have misread LTTG, and I definitely poked my head in without being invited. But I think being a little overly protective of JT. We’re all aware of his flaws, and we all love him the more for them.
What do you think LTTG was trying to say?
I think he was trying to say
draft Griffin over Rubio, because BG>JT.
I agree it shouldn’t be a BG vs RR debate thread which is why I called him out for bringing BG into the discussion.

congrats to JT
however, isn’t making the all-rookie THIRD team, like getting a participatoin trophy in little league?
www.myspace.com/cynemamusic.com
No not in this case
There were 2 rookies from 2007 included in the top 15 as well. Plus, Chalmers, Mbah a Mbah, Lee (Orlando) were on the 3rd team with Speights & JT, and JT was the highest drafted. Also, JT wasn’t drafted lower than any of the guys above him on the all-rookie teams either. So, no, I gotta disagree with you there Cynema.

but it does take something off the glow of Petrie's gem
when JT still basically comes down as the 12th best rook
Yes, it supports the fact that Petrie wasn’t crazy when everyone thought he was crazy, and yes it means we probably got the best guy we could have gotten at the 12 spot
but it’s not like we got a steal
Life is every mammal's journey from very very wet to very very dry.
No it doesn't
There’s no guarantee he’s the “12th” best rook. There 11 guys selected ahead of him, and only 8 of them are on the 1st 2 teams ahead of him. All the guys on the 3rd team were selected after him, and there isn’t rankings as to whose the best player on each team really.

I don’t see how a 3rd team rookie selection in a deep draft with holdovers from the previous year takes the glow off of anything.

i think it was thorpe's rookie rankings
from a week or so ago that had JT at 12th – that’s part of what I’m responding to.
Life is every mammal's journey from very very wet to very very dry.
The fact that he's ranked 12th by Thorpe speaks to GP's draft skill
every pick after the 3rd exponentially increases the bust potential. You wouldn’t go to Vegas if they were offering lottery odds, the only guarantee would be bust.
Those of us who have seen JT play every game have seen him improve by leaps and bounds. Thorpe nailed it when he said “A likely breakout candidate next season.”
There was a lot of JT love last night in the game thread as there should be. It’s a disservice to JT to break into a Blake Griffin vs. JT or Blake Griffin vs RR discussion here. Give the young man his due, he’s had a far better season than any of us expected, he has played every game and has progressed every week without any of the regression that Spence has showed.
I’m glad he’s on the Kings and regardless of who GP drafts with our first pick I see JT being a valuable part of this team for years to come.

I never thought of JT as a steal
I thought of him as a quality player who can help the team. When you’re selecting 12th overall, you better get a quality player. Steal? Take that bullshit outta here mayne.

pookey i agree
hell i didn’t know anything about JT prior to GP drafting him, just the fact that GP drafted him, told me he was going to be a solid NBA player. GP does have a great record:
k-mart
gerald wallace
hedo
peja
brian grant
etc.
hell, anthony johnson is still in the league and if memory serves me correctly, he was a 2nd rounder.

In 2005
Presti drafted Ian Mahinmi 2 spots before NY drafted David Lee. I think that is a Douby-level mistake. I still think he is a top 3 GM, but like Pookey said everyone makes mistakes.
So much of it is guestimated potential
but I still don’t know why, at that pick, GP wasn’t looking for a PG.

Donte? Donte'! Donté?!?!
'spect da 'xtra E'
partly sarcastic
but partly not. i mean i laugh when you get to “third team all….whatever”. i make the comparison only by saying its like you have to be in the league to get on the “third team all…whatever”. i think its somewhat of an honor, and frankly if we had a system that would allow JT to be more effective, he probably would get more pub. i was at the game last night, and dude was dominant in the paint, on the glass and just all-around hussle in the first quarter. then kenny natt basically sat him in the 2nd quarter, where (not coincidentally) the lead went from about 10 to a deficit of about 13 at the half.
then to start the third quarter, there’s JT again causing mayhem in the middle and in the paint. as soon as he develops some good post moves (i’ll take a c-webb jump hook) he is going to be an 18 and 10 type of player. but he needs the minutes for that to happen. all he does is produce.
so to sum up, it is an honor (somewhat) and he should be congratulated, but i still have to laugh at the entire “third-team” concept.

Normally I think one team suffices
The reason Thorpe expanded it to 3, in my opinion, because it was such a good class that it warranted 3.

Makes me regret...
That the Kings couldn’t have been even more terrible last year to earn a better Draft Pick in a deeper draft. Griffin/Rubio or BUST
If Ziegler blows a save... I'll flag his next post.
How many people...?
Said that this class wouldn’t have any depth. Let’s be honset. The whole draft process is a bit of a crapshoot. If it was a guarantee, would Jordan or Durant have been picked behind Bowie or Oden (sorry portland). How many quality players have been second round picks. Obviously I’d take Rubio or Giffen, but hindsight is 20-20. Think Wade slips to 9? Amare to 7 or whatever it was? What about KG? Don’t say there’s no depth in the next class, but hope that we get the best player we can.
Agreed
Last year it was initially Beasley, Rose, and a big drop off. Mayo was a head case, Lopez and Love were slow and/or short, Westbrook and Bayless were ’tweeners, Augustin was too short. On the other hand, some of us really liked Anthony Randoplh and Joe Alexander.
I think that this draft may lack a lot of star quality, but if most of these guys come out I like the depth as it pertains to potential players avaiable with our 2nd and 3rd picks.
SACTOWN ROYALTY - Try our thick creamy shakes!
Couple things
Wade was drafted 5th, and ironically, Amare 9th overall. (I always get amusement out of what could have been had the Clippers, who drafted Wilcox 8th overall that year, drafted Amare instead.)

Yes, good players slip
That doesn’t change the fact that it is has been proven that the higher your pick, the better your chances of finding a “franchise” type of player. Our reward last season for Theus continuing to play the vets even at the end of the season? Some poorly-timed wins that shot us all the way down to the 12th pick.
That is why being stuck as a team that is mediocre or a borderline playoff team for long stretches is actually worse in many ways than having a horrible year. If your horrible, at least you get a better shot at top talent who can get you back into that upper echelon. Not that you can’t sitll screw it up of course, as some teams (including ours in the past) have proven.

JT is badass
Fact is JT can play and has tons of potential. That’s worth celebrating. It means Petrie picked yet another dude who can play in this league. It is one step closer to rebuilding.
The only bummer this year is the choice isn’t between Lebron and Wade etc….
Isn't that a bummer every year except 2004?

I guess my point was
(like I said – I was traveling all day)
Our admiration of JT and the great effort and energy he has added shouldn’t blind us to the probability that IF we get BG, JT goes to the bench to make way for a probable All-Star level player
and justifyably so.

Much as I love JT,
LTTG probably has a better shot at the cheerios if he’s not doing the JT spin and lose control move we all love.
That said, he’s a stud. I think given time he’ll break out and become a young Webber. That’s right. He’s smooth, he just has to get ahold of it. 3-4 years, and he’s going to be Thebeast. Not to be confused with Th*beet.
