Artest, Rockets earn some respect
A long way from the Palace at Auburn Hills four seasons ago, a long way from NBA pariah, Artest sat down 10 rows back in the Toyota Center and let the love wash over him. He wanted to linger, commune, so Ron Artest just sat there. From the left and right, they quickly closed on him and he disappeared into wave upon wave of fans touching and hugging and thanking him. As security rushed to release Artest, the truth had never been so clear with him: Victory has long been confused with virtue in sports, but as a basketball star, Ron Artest was free again.
Artest fuels Rockets’ surge to second round
Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports
It's nice to see fans who can appreciate talent and are committed to winning. I am happy for the Rocket fans, happy for Artest and sad for the Kings fans who never appreciated what they had, and still can't now that it is gone.
Do the Rockets have what it takes to give the Lakers a run for their money? I don't know, but I am sure going to enjoy watching some quality playoff basketball.

You may be right
but we’ll never know.
In any case, it may have more to do with the running of the franchise, which has turned the Kings into the laughingstock of the league, than Artest.

Miami was a laughingstock
but they have a title in their recent past and Wade, and we don’t have anyone close to that level.

I think
Artest is accepting to share the ‘on-court leadership’ role with other players. As Portland could not handle all Houston’s offensive weapons at times, they had to pick their own poison and with Yao limited, all other players shared the offensive leadership duties (Scola, Brooks, Artest, even Battier). He clearly was not able to do that in Sacramento, and it seems to me that Adelman as the coach is hugely responsible for that.
On the other hand, can he remain ‘modest’ against Lakers and Kobe as well? Because I don’t believe Ron is able to carry his team on his own constantly.

The REAL victory is that T-Mac finally "made it" out of the first round...
in spirit, anyway.
Seriously, I’m still glad Artest is not here. It’s not that I don’t appreciate talent. I just appreciate players who are not boneheads.
Did it ever occur to coolcat that perhaps Ron is playing well and earning respect because he has (finally) matured a little bit and quit being a ball-hogging bonehead?

I don't think I really advocated for T-Mac to be a King
but I did bring up that prospect several times, more as an example of the type of move the Kings could make to obtain a disgruntled but high-profile player.
Of course, accuracy when paraphrasing has never been your strong suit.

I really haven't missed a lot
Bring on the draft, but I’m not really too interested in talking about the prospects in the meantime (it has gotten boring) until it gets a little closer and we know our draft position.
Now the coaching search is something to talk about, particularly as some teams get bounced out of the playoffs (like Boston maybe?) and candidates become more available.
As for the Rockets, they have at least gotten the monkey off their back and their franchise is heading in the right direction. They also have a GM who is generally making solid moves instead of having his recent past under the scope and his future questioned. And their coach is an outstanding defensive mind.

We wouldn’t have won less than 20 games, been at the bottom of the league in attendance and lost millions of dollars to cripple the franchise.

It's basically the discussion of
rebuilding on the run versus tearing it down completely and starting over. The Joe Dumars approach versus Kevin McHale. Except that we don’t have Al Jefferson.
I think Petrie tried to kid himself and his fan base that he was rebuilding on the run in getting rid of Artest and patching things up with MLE deals. We now know that wasn’t the case. The Emperor was caught wearing no clothes.
I am interested to watch what both Petrie and Dumars do going forward.
I also think Kevin Martin will be shipped out this summer. Too many coaches, too much losing, pretty soon it becomes easy to check out. If he’s going to emerge as a true star, it’s probably going to be somewhere else.
I also doubt that Donte Greene and the 23rd pick and Bobby Jackson will end up being able to impact a game the way Artest can.
The winner in all this is clearly Houston and Artest at this point. Artest escaped a franchise in decline with fractured leadership and ends up playing games that count. You have to work real hard to spin this as a victory for the Kings, although clearly not all the chapters of this book have been written.

Mistakes were made sure
But they are not fatal, and the franchise is not at Minnesota level, yet.
There is a new coach on the horizon. I don’t know about Donte Greene yet, or his potential impact. Give it another year, and I suspect we will know. Donte is only 21, though.
Kevin Martin’s potential trade SHOUDN’T be imminent unless there’s something I missed about this past season. A crappy season is a crappy season. Kevin was a part of that, but his health is a major issue why. Right now, he’s probably the best asset the Kings have. At least in terms of on court talent.
The Kings had no chance to compete with Artest. If Artest is so talented, why weren’t they able to get “more” than Greene Jackson and the 23rd overall pick? I don’t know either. I still think having Donte Greene is not that terrible of a thing. The kid is very very talented even if he’s immature at times. So what? Who wasn’t at 21?
Next season will be a very important one for JT, Shawes, Donte, Speed, and Cisco. If the 1st pick is Griffin, I would expect him to be a competent performer. If the pick is Rubio, it will take some time. I would be happy with Beno if he just didn’t have so many up & downs.
Whatever Nocioni’s role is, I hope it continues to play and aid into the young talent’s development. Nuff said.

Partial history lesson
You’re forgetting that Artest was pissed that he did not opt out and that the Kings were not offering him an extension. There was little doubt that he had to go.
Also, Ron’s mercurial nature devalued him greatly. I agree that the deal was a big win for Houston. But it was a big win because Artest had devalued himself so greatly. The Kings got what they could get and moved on.
Had they not made the deal, we’d be talking about who the Kings will draft with the 5-8 pick, not be talking about the 23 pick, and would not be wondering about the possible maturation of Donté Greene. And Ron would be walking at the end of the season or we would have had to pay him long term money.
The Dale Davis for Jermaine O’Neal deal looked like a slam dunk for Portland when they made it. Not so much now. Let’s see how this plays out for the next couple of years.

I agree with most of this
But it starts with the decision to part ways with him and the way they handled it. You had Maloof saying a bunch of BS about “do this and we will sign you long term,” and then they reneged. It’s just part of the unprofessional approach this franchise has taken since they got rid of Adelman. Of course there are nuances, but that’s the short version in my view.
In the end, though, it was definitely in Artest’s best interests that he go elsewhere because the Kings were going to be in so-so rebuild and kinda compete mode until they got rid of Miller and some of their other bad contracts. And Houston with Adelman and Artest was the perfect situation for him.
I think the Kings still could have gone .500 or close last season with Ron on board, but they wouldn’t have made the playoffs and Ron wouldn’t have been a happy camper, although he may have persevered with a decent new contract and some hope for the future in view. And they would have started to get towards that point with the Miller deal and might be better positioned to compete in a shorter time frame.
I know that’s not the prevailing view here, but that’s my take. Again, it’s the blow it up vs. build on what you have argument.

I've always said Ron is like a little kid
When he is winning, he is happy and loveable. He still has some wiered crap going on in his head as some of his latest videos clearly show. But he is a lot of fun. It’s when he’s losing (e.g. not getting his way) that Bad Ron (who haven’t said that in a while) comes out, and starts throwing tantrums.
If the Kings could have been a winning team, coached by someone who could semi-control him, and would let Ron be the man here, he would have been happy here too. Since none of that was going to happen, one of my few joys with the team this year was that Bad Ron and Good Ron was gone. But then, I’m just one of those just can’t appreciate Bill Kobe II Artest.

Good analogy about Ron
Playing with Yao often soothes some of the lesser things that Ron does. I think Adelman has helped quite a bit in that regard too. Houston offers something for Ron that Sacramento never could: Stability.

Opinions are like assholes: everybody has one.
I don’t see the two as being mutually exclusive, but apparently you do. Which makes sense coming from the Artest haters camp.
I will say this: I’m not going to be a fan of a team that doesn’t earn it. And this franchise certainly didn’t earn it this season.
I expect improvement this season. I will not be a fan of a team that enters perpetual rebuilding and joke of the league status.

You can really
…just shut off the spigot of when you are and aren’t a fan? It’s that easy? But that doesn’t apply to players evidently…because when Ron-Ron is acting up, you’re still on his jock.
Sorry, but you fit the textbook definition of a bandwagon fan.
I always thought that bearing through the losing made the winning that much more sweet.

Wrong
I’ve called out Ron when he’s screwed up; I just haven’t turned minor transgressions into molehills like you and your minions have.
A bandwagon fan to me is someone who is only there for the winning. I’ve followed this team though a lot of losing, and when that is accompanied by lack of effort and organzational incompetence that lingers — and I’m not saying we’re at that point, but we are definitely getting there — I will bid you adieu and let you relish beating your head into the wall and loving every minute of it.
I became a New York Yankees fan in 1964 because they were on TV every Saturday. The didn’t make the playoffs for 12 years, but they scrapped and I could relate to some of their players. I am still a fan.
I became a Baltimore Colts fan in 1965 when Tom Matte had to play quarterback with 17 plays taped on his arm and a missed Don Chandler field goal was called good and decided a playoff game against the Packers. I still liked them in the Bert Jones days, but they lost me when the Irsay fiasco was in full bloom. I didn’t jump back on the bandwagon and say I was a Colts fan when they won the Super Bowl.
As for you, you’re just a textbook asshole.

Wrong
You disappear for months at a time, show up when Artest has some success, and basically tell us to “suck it bitches”.
You don’t turn minor transgressions into molehills, you turn minor successes into the discovery of the Holy Grail.
I may be an asshole, but at least I’m here…for the good and the bad. Fact is, the Rockets are not likely to get past the Lakers, which means you will be back in your hole until Ron-Ron busts off his first double-double next season.

Life intervenes
Hey, I get busy and the stuff you are droning on and on about begins to bore me. So I check out for a while. That’s why they call it the offseason.
But hey, if you are looking for some brownie points, take all you need.
And I’m glad we apparently agree on at least one thing.

I never said
They were mutually exclusive. I said that your being an Artest fan comes ahead of your being a Kings fan. I also said that I had no problem with it as long as you’re up-front about your priorities.
And if you’re going to argue semantics, I’m not an “Artest hater.” I just didn’t want him on the team. The two are not the same.
And I also don’t believe that three years of rebuilding make us the perpetual joke of the league. But if you feel like we are, feel free to bestow your fanhood elsewhere. Nobody here will miss your ad hominem attacks and deliberate baiting of people into arguments.
Ok, people, let's generate all the good Karma we can until May 19. Then you can go back to your shallow and empty lifestyles.

Upfront?
I said that your being an Artest fan comes ahead of your being a Kings fan.
While that may be your opinion, it’s simply not true.
And I also don’t believe that three years of rebuilding make us the perpetual joke of the league.
You have a definite proclivity for taking things out of context. Here’s what I said:
“I will say this: I’m not going to be a fan of a team that doesn’t earn it. And this franchise certainly didn’t earn it this season. I expect improvement this season. I will not be a fan of a team that enters perpetual rebuilding and joke of the league status. … I’ve followed this team though a lot of losing, and when that is accompanied by lack of effort and organzational incompetence that lingers — and I’m not saying we’re at that point, but we are definitely getting there — I will bid you adieu and let you relish beating your head into the wall and loving every minute of it.”
I’m not an "Artest hater."
If it walks like a duck and it quacks like a duck … Think about that before you lecture me on being “upfront.”

How nice for you
To be able to comfortably pigeonhole everyone who disagrees with you as an idiot and a hater.
You’re the only person here who turns civil dialog into vitriolic arguments. Everyone else manages to disagree without being nasty to each other.
So if it walks like a jerk and posts like a jerk…

I simply give back
what is given to me. Treat me nice, I treat you nice. Reread the thread and see what I mean.
Anyway, your tit-for-tat is getting old. Let’s talk about the game last night instead.
My first thought is that the West used to run through Tim Duncan, so if you wanted to be the top team in the West, you had limit Duncan as much as possible. Now the West apparently runs through Kobe Bryant.
I think you have to credit Morey for getting Shane Battier first and then backing up that defensive presence and toughness with Artest. A gamble, but maybe it is starting to reap some benefits.
The Rockets deserve some props, but now they have to deliver and win the series, and that’s much easier said than done.
Maybe the Kings need to focus a little more on defense. They’ve talked about improving it, but for the most part Petrie keeps drafting shooters whose defense is weak. Maybe he should hang on to a few thugs and glue guys who will do the dirty work.

I just call everybody asshole’s and idiot’s because I feel like it. I attack public figures like Grant Napear. Are you Peaches? I hope not, but if you are, go fuck yourself. I’m tired of people like Tom Ziller wasting his time to rant about you. He’s got better things to write about. Like, anything.
See. I attacked Grant Napear. Not you. I got an idea though. Rather than assuming I’m the biggest jerkoff on the planet who enjoys pissing people off, you might just want to not mention me as the biggest instigator on planet earth. I’m sure I piss people off more than anyone else. That’s fine. I yam what I yam as the man said. That being said, go fuck yourself. I’m tired of you bringing me up when I had little or nothing to do with the conversation at hand. I’m not the cause of EVERY single problem here. I don’t particularly care for people who insinuate (especially without using my name—what a big man/woman you are) that I do something without saying who I am directly. If you’re going to spout such horseshit, at least being honest enough to admit who it is exactly that is doing so.
In essence, don’t be a stupid little bitch.

Derek Fisher
If Dwight Howard got suspended for a game, Fisher should definitely miss the next game. Howard’s foul was a frustration foul after he got hacked and held; Fisher’s was a clearly premediated cheap shot to the head.
This is a must win for the Lakers, and if the Rockets find a way to win tonight, it’s trouble in Fantasyland.
It’s not a good formula for Yao to score less than 10 points and Artest to score more than 20 through 3.

Kobe and Ron
It would have been interesting to get a few more camera angles on that Kobe elbow. He definitely went headhunting and will probably get away with it. And that hand slap exchange with Fisher heading into the lockerroom kind of creates the idea that that one was premediated as well. Mission accomplished.
I’m not sure if Adelman has any more henchmen down at the end of the bench that we haven’t seen, but this might be one of those series where you need the full 12-man roster.
My memory is escaping me. What happened when Artest was suspended for a game in the classic Spurs series? I can’t remember the specifics.

I think Fisher will be suspended
cheap shot + his head under Scola’s chin, very dangerous, at least as bad as an elbow or a fist.

I'm not sure Fisher will be, but he probably should be
I don’t think Artest should have been tossed, but running over and confronting Kobe was stupid and I understand why they tossed him. I wouldn’t suspend or fine Kobe or Artest, it wasn’t a big deal imo.

Yep
The Kobe-Artest thing should be fines at most. But I think Fisher will be suspended – that reeked of premeditation, and it was a clear elbow…Kobe’s was a bit sneakier.
Good for him they haven’t produced a shot of that from the baseline under the basket…at least not that I’ve seen as of yet.

Interestingly
I watched it again in real time on ESPN and it looks worse full speed, but I think it’s offset by Artest having his arm all over Kobe’s face before Kobe turns.
And I agree Fisher’s was premeditated and the elbow flying up after the hit is what will likely doom him, although as a hit it wasn’t much worse than the one Webber put on Stockton.

Funny
That’s exactly what I was thinking this morning, that it was reminiscent of the Webber-Stockton situation.
Also, for a team that had the best record in the league, and made it to the NBA finals last year, it’s kind of sad they are having to prove their toughness against a second round opponent. Normally, that is the position up-and-coming teams find themselves in, when they are trying to mentally hurdle an opponent that has given them problems in the past.
It makes me wonder if these Lakers are indeed ripe for the picking. They beat Houston four times in the regular season, yet they feel the need to change their style and show some toughness in a second round matchup?? Very interesting…
