It's worth listening to

Not really new information, except the nugget that Petrie thinks the class is deep in PG & PF’s. I listened to it last night when ed mentioned it in another fanshot.

I was worried this audio file wouldn’t be available in the aftermath. So I took notes. Glad I did, and glad i can re-listen.

Yeah, that was a good get so close to the coaching interviews.

He also seemed well prepared, confident and asked questions (but not follow ups) on a variety of important subjects. He’s no Jim Rome or Bob Costas but kudos on hitting on topics like exit interviews and coaching interview questions.

I'm not a huge fan either but...

He is IMO the best interviewer today in the sports world. He asks amazing follow-up questions and his prep for each guest is top notch.

A lot of talk focused

Offensive/defensive or both?

Sorry, no ability to listen to the link currently.

If offensively, that sort of defeats your Thabeet argument right? Just sayin’ ;)

Question: What kind of bear is best?

by otis29 on May 12, 2009 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Both

Scoring in the paint, rebounding, interior defense were talking points.

by Tom Ziller on May 12, 2009 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions

yep, all of the above

the wing / ball distribution was a briefer ‘also’. (thats the way it was said, whatever the intention)

He also specifically mentioned how few true Centers were available and that the draft was ‘dicey’ after one – or perhaps the top two players. A mixed bag of signals I guess.

That would seem to indicate

That Blake would be his pick if the Kings draft No. 1 and that he is not as high on Rubio.

A few interesting comment by GP

Yes, other candidates have been discussed besides Eddie & Paul.

One comment he made when discussion the 3 previous criteria being used to choose candidates:
1. Extensive NBA experience 2. NBA Head Coaching experience, & 3. Head coaching success. But, in stating #2, GP used the word “Preferably”. Now was this a mistake or is he giving himself so wiggle room. With the limited number of candidates that actually have NBA Head coaching experience, are there any candidates that will actually take the job for the kind of money that the Maloofs are actually willing to offer. Does the use of the word “Preferably” open the door to long time NBA assistants without NBA head coaching experience, or even a European Head coach.

I’m not great at transcribing so consider this a paraphrase: GP " particularly with the way the team is configured at the moment and with the addition of 3 draft picks, initally the job will be a teaching job as much as a coaching job because of the youth. At least, how the team is made up now". “some patience will be needed by the coach”.

Now, my wishful interpretation. GP knows that his young squad, needs guidance and a teacher to improve their skill set & BB IQ. And, he’ll looking for someone who can provide both, but hopefully both goals can be achieved through the combined efforts of the coach & 1st assistant. Preferably with NBA head coaching experiece, but will settle for long time NBA assistant with proven success at the NBA level. He understands that change won’t come overnight, so patience will be required. So, whoever gets the job, should have less pressure to improve immediately which may have contributed to the failure of the previous 2 coaches.

Again, the last part is my interpretation, and may be slightly biased based on my hopes for the future success of the team.

Yep

He really hammered on the need for teaching from the staff.

by Tom Ziller on May 12, 2009 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought an important point of emphasis

Was that existing or young players greatly improved under Jordan. People act like Caron Butler was an All-Star talent in Miami or LA, but quite honestly, he wasn’t. True of Antawn Jamison too.

Westphal was connected with Rashard Lewis, and a few other players that I’m blanking on at the moment.

I honestly thought he sort of glossed over Westphal’s deficiencies while really hammering the point home about EJ.

He also made the point very clear that the PG crop is deep, but so if the PF crop. I think people might be surprised that Petrie may, for example (using names so people get an idea) that he feels Jarvis Varnado may be available at 23 is just as good as a value as Thabeet at 5. (Not saying it’s true, but some of what Petrie suggested or hinted at that.)

It’s always interesting to listen to him talk as well.

Vanardo

He reminds me a little of 3-Wil. Short for someone that such an effective shot blocker (about 6-9), and raw offensively. Vanardo looks to have a higher basketball IQ.

Being around EJ could help him develop on 2 ends

He did really help Michael Stewart in his season here. I guess this means I’m warming to the idea of EJ more & more. I’m still worried he’s a stopgap though.

definitely worth a look at 23. Could fill in that 3rd big man role nicely with some defense, especially if we take a point with the earlier pick.

He is going back to Europe again

He also mentioned another trip to Europe… maybe there is a coach that has his interest. Could also be another look at draft prospects.

by STH114 on May 12, 2009 2:51 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, very interesting

Back-to-back trips to Europe. Obviously he’s going to get to see plenty of Ricky Rubio in pre-draft workouts. Is he taking a long look at another Euro prospect for the later picks? A coach? Something’s going on there, right? He’s not just cruising out there because he doesn’t have anything to do back home.

by furious.d on May 12, 2009 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Rubio's team ...

… is in the playoffs beginning the 21st. Jennings also, though Jennings probably won’t play.

by Tom Ziller on May 13, 2009 7:01 AM PDT up reply actions

I thought it was weird that Geoff basically did everything in his power

To not mention Rubio and Griffin by name. He says stuff like “there are 1 or 2 players that are obviously really good and then it gets dicey from there” (not an exact quote), I assume he’s talking about Rubio and Griffin, I wonder why he doesn’t just come out and say that. Maybe if we end up with someone else, he doesn’t want their feelings to get hurt.

by Deleran on May 12, 2009 2:58 PM PDT reply actions

You get in trouble if you mention their names out loud

He couldn’t say their names directly. He made it clear he thinks they are the best 2 players in the draft.

It'a all about bargaining I believe

If he wanted to move down, up, or even trade whoever we pick he needs to make sure the other teams don’t know what he is really thinking. If other teams know he’s focusing on those two, a lot of trading options would dissapear.

by eduardo_m7 on May 12, 2009 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think it's about bargaining

Teams pretty much know what he wants because they will know his team pretty well. There isn’t as many secrets out there as people would like to believe.

Have to agree with Pooky on this one

I know Jerry has mentioned that they have to be careful about taking about players that haven’t declared for the draft or are under contract with another team or league. So, it’s probably safest just to get in the habit of not mentioning anyones name, to avoid conflicts or tampering.

The Kings have 3 draft picks

he is back in Europe to scout. Period.

The draft is an ever changing landscape – players out, information that may alter opinion, drarft day deals – heck these guys hole up in “War Rooms”.

Someone you think that shouldn’t be available is suddenly around – you have to do your homework and Geoff Petire has proven himself to be a man who does his homework. (Talk to some more coaches, teammates, etc.)

And being in Europe to catch some games is better than hanging around waiting all week for next Tuesday.
