A New Deadline For Kings Arena Progress
Not to alarm y'all, but the NBA and the Maloofs just set a deadline for progress on the arena front ... without actually setting a deadline. Tony Bizjak of the Sacramento Bee reports that the NBA could be alright with the governor's proposition to sell Cal Expo. But snuck in there towards the end ...
NBA officials say they face a tight timeline. The Kings reportedly are losing millions of dollars at Arco Arena, which team officials say is outdated.
A league representative said the NBA feels it must make significant progress this year on an arena deal to keep the basketball team in town.
"The bleeding has to stop sooner than later," the NBA's John Moag said. "The (Kings owners) have said they need to see by March 2010 that there is light at the end of the tunnel."
That's less than a year away. And it leaves open the possibility that if significant progress is not made, the team could, at the end of February 2010, file for relocation for the 2010-11 season.
Moag said developers will be visiting the site soon.

Riiiiiiiight....
because the reason fans such as myself don’t attend games is because Arco is so outdated

Scare tactics.
I wish the Maloofs would wait until the next coach is hired before issueing vague threats like this. How much less attractive does an unstable team look to potential candidates? Not that potential coaches shouldn’t know this already, it just doesn’t project the best image when these things are flying around the media DURING a search.

I used to think the same thing.
While Arco is fine from a regular fans perspective to watch basketball it leaves something to be desired from a corporate perspective.
The facility because if its size, and antiquated status doesn’t allow the Maloofs to book the facility for many premier venues such as concerts, Fights… While they due book some its not what they would expect with a new stadium.
Its basically a dollar and cents thing.

Maybe the Maloof’s should work on building a winner before threatning (probably misspelled there) to move the team if they don’t get a new building.
It really irritates me when all owners get like this. If they want a new arena why don’t they build it themselves? Thats why they own a sports team. Coz’ they’ve got millions!

Supply, demand and money
Setting aside all of the emotion, it’s a rather simple equation. Is there someone out there willing to furnish the Maloof’s with what they are requesting from Sacramento? If the answer is yes and we as a city do not care to compete, the Kings will be gone. And as much as we will want to blame the Maloof’s for that, the simple truth is that they have given our city years to develop a plan.
As a fan, I will be devastated if/when the Kings leave. And it is fair to say that if/when they leave, so will my allegiance to the Kings. It is also fair to say that it will be OK if everyone in Sacramento looks at the Maloof’s as public enemy #1. But the city of Sacramento is then public enemy #1A for allowing this to happen. Put another way, Clay Bennet may be a douche nugget, but that does not absolve the city of Seattle for allowing themselves to be put in the position where they could be outbid by Oklahoma City.

Agreed
I have a feeling of impending doom and I hope something happens soon to cure it
The NBA: "Where 27 free throws happens"
Yep
Bottom line, regardless of the record and state of the team this is a business, one that is going into the red. Unless the sellouts and money start flowing back into the system they will be forced to relocate. As a Kings fan, this would suck huge monkey balls. But as an owner if there is an empty state of the art facility waiting for your franchise that can almost guarantee an automatic sellout for the first season (OKC), money can break any allegiance or loyalty you once had with a city, especially when the city and its residents have said F You to a new arena downtown.
I hope they work something out soon, and even look at other locations, mentioned in the article. There is a lot of space in Sacramento and the potential is just waiting to be tapped. In the next 20 years the cities population will increase significantly and being in California the average salary for workers is much higher than the rest of the country. If the Maloofs do pack up and leave, the city should still be pushing to build a new arena and entice another sport franchise to come in, there are a lot of other teams that are in the same fiscal trouble (Pacers, Bobcats, Clippers)

I agree with ElRon here

This lottery pick could save the franchise in Sacramento
Especially if it brings back interest in the Kings. Come on David! Bring it home! Hell give us Rubio and Griffin.
Father of the "Natt this!" movement.
This is why
As a 21 year season ticket holder I have had trouble getting excited by the team. Normally, the possibility of Griffin or Rubio would really get me amped up….but who wants to get that high and then find out its only for a season…like Durant in Seattle.
Its sort of like having sex and not knowing if the girl will still be there when you’re finishing.
That kind of thinking could lead to the thing your actually dreading
People not being excited for games, because they think the Kings will just move, eventually cause the Kings to move because people aren’t coming to the games.

Thanks for your support
At least this will make Channing Frye happy.
