Wayman Tisdale, 1964-2009

Tizzy_medium

CBS Sports reports that Wayman Tisdale has died at the age of 44. He will be missed dearly. Rest in peace, brother. Smooth, rhythmic peace. With a nice bass line.

Hey, Cancer: fuck you.

Awful news

Tizzy was a great King – one of my all-time favorites. And he seemed like a wonderful guy.

Best wishes to the Tisdale family.

Well...

That sucks. He was sweet man. I went to elementary school with his daughter. He played horse with us second graders. Tisdale kept it close but would always win on the reverse dunk. Us Sacramentans were lucky to have him as a part of the community.

And yes, fuck cancer. Seriously.

by mattym on May 15, 2009 8:41 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Great story, mattym

The reverse dunk used to be my finishing move in HORSE, too.

A real shame, by all accounts, the man was a wonderful person.

This is rough

Never heard a single bad thing said about Wayman Tisdale. Best wishes for his wife and kids.

I first read the headline

and my heart dropped. I enjoyed watching him play – his smile was infectious, the “flip” fun to see. Enjoyed his music as well. I, too, never heard or read a negative thing about him. A class act. He will be missed. Rest in peace, Mr. Tisdale.

My condolences to his family. Lost my mom to cancer as well, so I feel for them. Cancer is indeed a beast. An uncaring, unfeeling monster that takes waaaaay too many people before their time.

Love that pic, too, Z – flat top and the powder blue uni. Old school is cool. :)

I remember

watching Kings games as a kid, and rooting for Tisdale… not to mention it was fun to be him in NBA JAM. I liked his Jazz as well.

Rest in peace, my prayers are with the family.

RIP

He was a great man with a great heart who succeeded on and off the basketball court. My sister and his oldest daughter played on the same soccer team in Sacramento and our families would cross paths in the neighborhood. My parents also went to OU so they’d chat about that all the time too. He was a classy guy and I will always remember his Tizzy Flips. I too agree with dalt99 about #23 armbands or patches for next season. I suspect they will honor him somehow, he was too big of a fan favorite not to. He had his best seasons in Sacramento and those players, no matter how bad the team sucked, always seemed to hold a special place in the hearts of the fans. By the looks of things, reading some of these posts, it sounds like they still do. I hope Reynolds and Gerould and all the ones from back then get together and reminisce. He will definitely be missed, not only as a basketball player but as a human being too. I live in Phoenix now so I’m hearing both the Sac and Phx eras of him. For once, I understand and can feel for the Suns fans too (sorry, I’m a Kings fan through and through, so it’s rare I empathize with them, lol). RIP Wayman, cancer sucks, and my thoughts and my family’s thoughts are with your family.

Tisdale was always a favorite

His teams were endearing to the fans despite the team just kept coming up short on winning.

Sad to hear

I remember him visiting my school when I was younger to show a video he made telling kids to stay away from the bad influences in the streets. I remember being in awe. RIP

Was one of the classiest Kings I ever had the pleasure of meeting.
R.I.P brother.

I have suffered through Joe Kleine, Pervis Ellison, Greg Kite, Dwayne Schintzius & many others. This team doesn't scare me!

athlete, artist, humanitarian

did anyone else watch that espn feature that profiled wayman’s dealing with his leg amputation? he got a huge red-and-white OU logo on his prosthetic and basically treated the whole thing like just another opportunity to rep his Sooners. the man could not have possibly had a more inspired and inspiring attitude towards the various hardships of life. tremendous loss. he will be missed.

Tizzy Tribute

Kings should send Tizzy’s wife, Regina, to represent the Kings at the draft lottery…i know C-Webb is scheduled to do it, but i think it would be a classy move and allow the League to honor Wayman during that event.

Tizzy-Griffin

I just read a story that Blake Griffin asked Wayman if he could wear his retired number at OU out of respect for him and his game. Classy move by the Kid towards a classy guy.

by longtimelistenerfirsttimecaller on May 15, 2009 3:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Wayman was one of the major reasons I became a Kings fan

I saw the ESPN show, what a classy guy. I knew he had lost his leg but I had no idea his cancer was that severe so this comes as a real shock. I lost my dad to cancer and my wife had bad breast cancer but praise God, she has survived 7 years. Cancer is a bitch, f it.

Wayman was a total pro as an athlete and as a musician. He wasn’t just an athlete who could play music. He played music at the same level he played basketball, a real player.

Has Wayman’s jersey been retired? If not maybe next year.

Excerpt from A Prayer by Max Ehrmann

May I not forget that poverty and riches are of the spirit.
Though the world know me not,
May my thoughts and actions be such
As shall keep me friendly with myself.
Lift my eyes from the earth,
And let me not forget the uses of the stars.
Forbid that I should judge others,
Lest I condemn myself.
Let me not follow the clamor of the world,
But walk calmly in my path.
Give me a few friends who will love me for what I am;
And keep ever burning before my vagrant steps
The kindly light of hope.
And though age and infirmity overtake me,
And I come not within sight of the castle of my dreams,
Teach me still to be thankful for life,
And for time’s olden memories that are good and sweet;
And may the evening’s twilight find me gentle still.

We will miss you, Tiz. Our prayers are with your family.

Ok, people, let's generate all the good Karma we can until May 19. Then you can go back to your shallow and empty lifestyles.

Yep

Almost 12 hours after the news broke, and 12 hours since the tears started to flow, it still sucks. If there’s anything to remember, it’s that he’s had 2 careers. He had a 12 year NBA career and then an 8-LP music career (spanning at least 13 years, first album was released in ‘95, right? but don’t forget that Kings single that was released in the early 90s! :)). And of course he had his family which one could say was a 3rd career. Although he only lived 44 short years, he’s accomplished what most people never will even if they live to be twice his age. If we could only be so lucky to have had his life. Even in this day of tragic sadness, that makes me smile. He still makes me smile. :)

Q?

Are fans showing up at Arco to reminisce and mourn? Just curious.

Class Act

I was a kid growing up when the Kings could barely win 12 games a year, yet remember Arco filled to the brim. Ainge, Simmons, Tisdale, even Travis Mays for a year. Those were my favorite times as a basketball fan. When I was 9 Tisdale showed up to our gym to speak with the local YMCA kids who played ball, about the importance of staying out of trouble and driving to achieve your goals. He had a big cast on his leg because he was hurt, and missed a significant portion of the year. At 9 years old, the man was the biggest thing on earth to me. Yet he was the most inviting person you could ever meet. He was my favorite, and I got to shake his hand. Some men you grow up wanting to be like because of their athletic ability. This man makes you want to be a better person. He is what Idols idolize. Gone from our earth, but not our hearts 23. God bless you.

Tizzy

Your music was, and is, great. My dad was fortunate enough that he and your cousin got to see you play backstage. Every time I look through the photo album I see you giving my dad rabbit ears. Wish I could have met you myself. God bless.

as a resident of tulsa

these past 4 years i have learned more about tisdale. he was very important to the city here. a great player for booker t washington and the university of oklahoma. he had been really sick the past couple years and always had a smile. even when he lost his leg he was always optimistic. he is known for his basketball game and his music, but his positive attitude during such an adverse time is what makes him a hero. he will be missed and my prayers to his family.
