2009 StR Community Draft Board: Pick #9

Blake Griffin, Ricky Rubio, Brandon Jennings, Tyreke Evans, Hasheem Thabeet and Stephen Curry were selected 1-6. Ty Lawson is your No. 7. James Harden is No. 8.

Reminder: THIS IS NOT A MOCK DRAFT. This is draft board, a list with the order of prospects you'd like to see the Kings pick. In other words, if we were the Kings front office, when our pick came up, we'd take the top name left on our board. So pick your choice, not who you think Petrie or anyone else would choose in a slot.

Explain your choice in the comments, and lobby for who should be added to the next pick's choices. Poll will remain open until 8 AM PDT on Tuesday.

At this point

for the kings, I’d be happy with Holiday or Blair, but Derozan is a good choice as well. That being said, given the importance of PG and bigs coupled with the kings’ depth at wing player, the first two are much better choices.

Definitely want Jrue Holiday here

I think he’s the best talent with the most upside and fills the greatest need this team has (perimeter defense).

Him or Teague

Both good point guards with lots of potential.

I voted Hoiliday

Even tho it seems like Flynn is going higher on many boards, and I like him. No shock here, but I am concerned with Flynn’s lack of size. I like Holiday’s upside of course. He’ll do the Westbrook thing, right? I’ve heard that he is both an elite and sub-par defender, which I guess can be true.

Oh yeah, maybe I jumped the gun on asking to have Earl Clark as an option at 5 or whatever, but he should be on future ones (and probably this one).

Enlighten me

I’m the first to admit this I only follow college hoops sporadically. That being said, I’ve never watched Demar DeRozan, and had never heard of him before seeing his name in mock drafts.

From what I read online, he strikes me as the classic unproven “potential” guy. Am I wrong?

Never forget: I am a complete idiot

You're not wrong

Though he came on well at the end of the year, he’s got near McGrady-like skills. Top class of 2008 recruit, I believe. Went to USC in a package deal with Lil Bow Wow. Not a joke.

It was actually Lil' Romeo

Ok, but my real question is:

who is Big Romeo? Are we talking Montagues and Capulets?

OMFG! I googled Lil’ Romeo and found this – my ancient flatus status knows no bounds

Yo! Yo! Romeo, Whey fo’ art thou? uh oh!

I think I am so out of it I need to start wearing argyles and caridgans. sigh.

Its between Derozan, Blair and Teague...

I think DeRozan could have the potential to be something special. But I really think highly of Blair and picture him being like a Paul Millsap, but it is too early to pass on a guy with the upside of DeRozan.

Holiday

Purely because of need. Someone has to stop those 3s.

I might be strange

But I prefer Holiday over DeRozan primarily because I think Holiday is more handsome. I use ‘handsome’ rather than ‘physical appearance’, because "physical appearance’ seems to refer to physique and head (face), and ‘handsome’ more to someone’s head but not physique.

Anyways, I think that DeRozan is ugly. And for some reason I think that better looking people in general have a greater likelihood to become better athletes. There are tons of examples of ugly people who excelled at sports, but I think there are far more handsome ones.

Now, I dont think that this is a determining factor for me, but a contributing one—maybe even a tiebreaker. Also I realize that personal preference has some weight here, but I think there are people who are generally better looking to most of us—people with characteristics that we generally find desireable.

And I realize that to some extent one’s physical appearance can reflect athletic ability, etc.—certainly when dealing with two people who are at vastly different athletic levels. But these guys are both top tier athletes. You know—neither is ugly cause they are out of shape or whatever…

So, do you think that handsomeness has any weight in your analysis?…maybe it’s usually subconcious?

Should it have any weight? Do you think it’s useful?

LOL

Funniest thing I’ve read in a while.

How handsome is LeBron James? Tim Duncan? Dirk Nowitzki?

Randy Johnson is probably one of the 5 best lefthanded pitchers in the history of baseball.

Maybe these are outliers to your theory?? :)

Yeah Otis

We can all think of our favorite ugly athletes. I have a few (Kaman, Cassell, all hockey players), but my question is: Do you think that handsomeness is useful/appropriate in evaluating prospects?

by DustyG on May 18, 2009 11:42 AM PDT up reply actions

It's an interesting theory

If you think about it from the standpoint of high school classism – “handsomeness” is as much of a group as skin color or gender. And I see in the business world every day how an attractive person with a decent personality is going to have a far greater chance of achieving promotions than a perhaps more qualified, less attractive person.

But in the world of pro sports, you can’t hide your athletic deficiencies behind a pretty face. You can either hang, or you can’t.

Again, it’s an interesting theory, but at this level of competition I’d be hard pressed to believe it makes much of a difference.

Question: What kind of bear is best?

by otis29 on May 18, 2009 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

An important difference here...

I think you are saying the competetive edge is gained FROM the ‘handsomeness’ in the business world. I’m saying that a player’s hansomeness might be useful in assess how athletic they may be.

I’m intentionally using handsomeness to assess a prospect because I believe that there is a correlation between attractiveness and basketball success. I think that is different from giving a promotion cause you feel (consciously or subcounciously) that someone is handsome.

Does that difference I’m trying to point out make sense?

by DustyG on May 18, 2009 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Also

I understand that you were saying that some of the VERY BEST are pretty ugly. Altho I’d say that LeBron, Duncan, and Dirk are not all that ugly—especially for REALLY tall people (who I’d argue are more likely to be ugly (oh great, another can of worms)).

Some people who have not bad head structure have skin that most of us would consider undesirable, like The Randy Unit. That may be another thing to consider, messed up head configuration versus blemishy skin. Certainly if you have both, you are ugly. But I would argue that the structure is more important than skin when accessing a prospect.

Whatever.

Anyways…

by DustyG on May 18, 2009 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

LOL

I should clarify, I’m only laughing because it’s a viewpoint I’ve never thought about before – but it is something where my initial reaction was “that’s a bunch of horseshit”, but then after I thought about it a bit…well, it deserves more than a reflexive dismissal.

I’ll be interested to see what everyone else thinks…

I always wonder how many of these guys are XYY or have acromegaly or precocious puberty

anyhoo -

I again, for the third time, vote for Holliday because he when his skilled are harnassed we will witness the Taming of the Jrue (I have already used (he doesn’t look Jrue-ish, and I am a Jrue blue believer). I am very swayed by the comments of David Thorpe who has said wonderful things about two guys working out with him – DeJuan Blair and Jrue Holliday.

by betweentheeyes on May 18, 2009 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I took Hill here

I don’t like him as a top five pick, but at #9 he could have some value. He has unlimited potential – he could be good or a bust…unlimited, see?

I’m betting that I will be voting for Hill for the next couple of rounds, but in a draft short on tall guys, I think he’s worthwhile here.

I also voted Hill here

based on talent/potential instead of need. Hill doesn’t really have a lot of glaring deficiencies AND the potential to be great. Seems like he would be the ultimate steal at 9 while Jrue seems kinda of reach-ish based on offensive skill set and stats.

by CDinSD on May 18, 2009 10:41 PM PDT up reply actions

I went with DeMar Derozan here

He could be a really good pickup in this draft. He reminds me of Josh Howard.

Blair or Holiday would have been my next choice.

by Aykis16 on May 18, 2009 1:22 PM PDT reply actions

I picked Jordan Hill and my reasoning is this:

Value.

I know we don’t help at the 4 as much as we do other positions but in most mocks Hill is a top 5 selection. I’ve seen him as high as #3 overall.

IF Hill slipped that far (he won’t) and IF the Kings were to somehow end up with the 9th pick (they won’t) there is no way they would let him get past them. Even if he’s only selected as trade bait the 6’10" Junior easily the best value on this imaginary board.

That said, this little exercise doesn’t really make sense to me. The Kings are going to get a top 4 pick and it’s pretty much a dead certain lock they won’t trade it. What do we care about who’s on the board at #7 or whatever. Let the poor saps below us worry about that!

C’mon, let’s have some fun and start looking at who the Kings will draft at #23. (Sam Young? Patty Mills? Wayne Ellington?)

That isn't the point of a draft board

It’s who’d you pick if you had that slot. There’s no point in skipping to 23 if we don’t know who will be between 5 & 22.

OK, wait...

… you mean it’s not about who the Kings would pick? I thought that was the explanation for Ty Lawson and now Jrue Holiday going ahead of Hill (i.e. we need a point more than a power forward).

Nobody here actually thinks Holiday will be selected before Hill, right? Guess I’m all mixed up…

It is about who the Kings would pick

you have a list of guys you like and cross them off as they get picked. Sure, you expect your #9 guy on the list to be crossed off by the time the 23rd pick comes around, but maybe he’s not. Stranger things have happened.
