Around SBN: Ohio State And Florida Target 2013 Receiver Recruits

There has been speculation in the Sacramento media that the Kings might prefer Rubio over Griffin. The thinking goes that they have a terrible point guard (Beno Udrih) and an up-and-coming big man (Jason Thompson). The problem with that thinking? The Kings aren't stupid. Griffin is the best player in the draft and is a big upgrade over Thompson. They might need Rubio more, but they won't pass on Griffin at No. 1.

Yeah

because outside of Voisin’s article about Rubio… there hasn’t been that much speculation by the Bee right? I probably shouldn’t speak, aside from what shows up here, I can no longer speak as if I read the Bee.

Chad Ford
The problem with that thinking? The Kings aren’t stupid.

The problem with Chad’s thinking? He’s not a very good talent evaluator (see Milicic, Darko). Chad can tell me who the Kings would draft only if he’s got a direct quote of Geoff Petrie.

I agree with Chad

His past brain-boners aside, I don’t see us passing on Griff, except maybe in a trade. It’s one thing to have no idea where Geoff Petrie is gonna go in the mid to late first round, its another beast altogether with the first pick.

by Citadel 29 on May 19, 2009 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions

I think

if they get the first pick, they’d be dumb to pass of Griffin. But I just wish for one of the top 2 … that’s all i ask!!

I not saying they'll pass on Griffin

I’m saying that Chad Ford has a track record of poor evaluation. So when he says Griffin is a slam-dunk compared to Rubio, I don’t care. Petrie will evaluate both players, and he’ll make the choice.

Top 2! Top 2! Top 2!

If we dont get in the top two I hope we trade our picks to get two picks in the second half of the lottery. I think there’s pretty decent talent there. I’d like Tyreke Evans or Jrue Holiday and Earl Clark, please.

by DustyG on May 19, 2009 9:09 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not so sure...

…that Evans will be available in the second half of the lottery. I think someone will take him by #7. I would not be too bummed out if we got him at #4.

by corbin on May 19, 2009 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree.

I think Evans and/or Holiday might very well go before Hill, Thabeet, Jennings, DeRozan, and/or Harden.

by DustyG on May 19, 2009 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed.

I think Ford is bringing a welcome dose of sanity to these proceedings.

However…

I don’t believe in luck or karma, but it’s definitely bad luck and bad karma to be talking about what we’ll do with the #1 pick before it becomes a reality. So, on that note, let’s start talking ourselves into how great the fourth pick is going to be, otherwise there’s going to be collective depression on a massive scale among the good readers of this site…

by Citadel 29 on May 19, 2009 9:09 AM PDT reply actions

the key there is...

BG is a “big upgrade” over JT. I agree. As much as I root for JT, with BG you could pencil in a double double every night. You wouldn’t have to worry about the 4 spot, and just focus on everyone else. That’s a big upgrade.

Life is every mammal's journey from very very wet to very very dry.

by Holmdel on May 19, 2009 9:22 AM PDT reply actions

Funny

I think that with JT you have a double double almost every night. This is not about the Griffin/Rubio debate, more about the player I believe JT will be next year

by eduardo_m7 on May 19, 2009 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Last 17 games

of the ’08 – ’09 season JT averaged 14.2 pts. and 9.88 rebounds. I can only imagine that will translate into next season if he gets the same amount of minutes. With Blake Griffin on the roster, it may not. I do like the fact that the Kings will have front court options and flexibility with three potentially great young bigs.

He can play it. He just doesn't know it.. lol

If he can’t take his man on the outside he needs to learn to take him on the inside. He has the ability to be as good or better then JT or Hawes if he’s willing to work hard. He’s the X-FACTOR next year.

by AyyJude on May 19, 2009 10:08 AM PDT up reply actions

not a question of ability

its a question of hunger, we’ll know next year if he has the drive to be good, or just a career bench shooter a la tim thomas

I

honestly think he’s a major, major key in the success of the Kings’ future. If he can come through and be a solid pro …. nice. If not, yikes.

One of the many things I love about Chad Ford is his ability to get details right
The lottery can literally change the course of a franchise. In 1992, the big prize was Shaquille O’Neal. The Magic had less than a 1 percent chance of winning the lottery, but walked away with the prize. That year, it was the Timberwolves who had the best chance of winning. How many championships would the Wolves have won with Shaq anchoring the paint.

That was 1993 homeskillet. Orlando had the 2nd best odds to win the Shaq sweepstakes in 1992.

But Minnesota did have the 2nd best odds in 1993 as well

And another error
In 1997, another amazing center, Tim Duncan, was the favorite to be the first pick in the draft. The Celtics had the best chance of winning the lottery, but the Spurs (with that second-best chance) prevailed. Celtics fans are still mourning the big guy that got away, and the Spurs turned into the top dynasty of this decade.

Spurs actually had the 3rd best odds, and the Celtics 2nd, but because the Grizzlies and Raptors were banned from getting the top picks in those years, the Spurs got the pick instead.

Certainly Shaq is a first ballot HOFer and a franchise guy, but....

he didn’t win a championship in Orlando, why would he have won one in Minny. If the T-Wolves drafted Shaq, they wouldn’t have been able to draft K-G and Shaq would have left them for LA like he left the Magic. That was my point LTTG.

Ford is probably wrong more than he is right but when it comes to the draft that's the way it goes, Who isn't?

The thing I like about him is he is well connected to many gms/ team execs and he gets a lot of interesting stuff for them. I thought he did a good job of evaluating players on his recent workout toursl

According to NBA.com

Shaq put up 23.4 and 13.9 in the 92-93 season. Looks like Ford wins this round.

I said that Ford’s details of how he said each team had a chance to win was wrong.

On Chad Ford

While I agree with his assessment, I am reminded that this is the same guy that blasted the Kings for taking JT at #12 last year. My point is that Ford does not know what the Kings are going to do any more than we do.
