Why we should take Pat Calathes at #4

So I'm sitting at my desk, and I realized something kind of incredible..

1998 is the year that the Kings started their ascent towards greatness.  Which two teams had the top picks that year?  Oh, that's right, it was #1 Clippers and #2 Grizzlies, just like this year.  Very interesting... They are projected as of right now to take a big guy and then a point guard, just like the Clips and Griz did that year (Olowokandi and Bibby).  Another amazing coincidence is that there is a white point guard out of the university of Florida available and he will seem like a reach at our draft spot.

So obviously, we need to draft Calathes at #4,  trade K-Mart for Amare this summer, and then in two years trade Calathes for Rubio.. (or maybe Jennings, since he was supposed to go to U of A like Bibby).

READY... GO

Let's not

“Nick” Calathes will be available at #23. Jennings or Evans @ #4.

I was looking at the name and thinking

it must be “Nick’s” brother, I didn’t even know he was in the draft.

Ohh that's for sure

Why even say it? Top to bottom the Warriors organization is better than the Kings. Starting from the great owners, down to the proven GM, and the all the way to the thoughtful coach

by eduardo_m7 on May 20, 2009 8:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I was not here to start an argument, but if that's what you guys want...

Yes the Maloof brothers are better owners than Cohan, whoever your GM is is probably better than Larry Riley (even though he has yet to do anything), I mean look at all the great things he’s done for the team. He brought in Nocioni, gave Udrih a big contract, and…and…and….

Roster:
Monta>Kmart
SJax>Francisco Garcia/Nocioni
Randolph>Thompson
Biedrins>Hawes
Azabuike>McCants
Wright>Gooden/Diogu
Bellinelly>Udrih//Will Solomon
CJ Watson>Bobby Jackson
Donte Greene=Bust city
Calvin Booth=Bust city

Good jobe tanking and getting the 4th pick.

Um, no
Monta>Kmart

KMart- Younger, bigger, cheaper, better scorer, statistical tie in rebounds.

As for the rest, we don’t even have McCants, Gooden, Diogu, Solomon or Jackson under contract anymore. And you’re comparing veterans with first and second year big men.

I’ll give you Jackson over Nocioni, but Noc isn’t a starter for most of his career.

If you must troll, troll accurately.

Ok, people, let's generate all the good Karma we can until May 19. Then you can go back to your shallow and empty lifestyles.

by LeaguePassAddict on May 21, 2009 7:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Since Monta barely played 2008-2009, let's compare 07-08

Monta – 81 games/53% field goal percentage/5 rebounds/3.9 assists/20.2 points
KMart – 61 games/45% field goal percentage/4.5 rebounds/2.1 assists/23.7 points

KMart might score more than Monta, but he’s not as efficient a scorer as Monta is. He also can’t spread the ball as well as Monta (an area Monta is still improving in), or rebound as well as him (plus KMart has 4 inches on Monta too).

Monta had this one season where he was injured, so I wouldn’t be ready just yet to call him injury prone, but this is the second straight season where KMart has missed at least 20 games.

Another thing is that Monta is still 23 and is still improving, and KMart is 26 isn’t really improving in anything. His numbers have stayed about the same for the past three years, except his scoring has increased (but his field goal percentage has dropped) and his turnovers have increased.

Career True Shooting Percentages

Martin = 58.9%

Ellis = 53.4%

Next.

by section214 on May 21, 2009 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

True shooting is a stat made by fans. It's not very relevant.

The only reason KMart’s is higher than Monta is because KMart is a better 3-point shooter than Monta.

Again. Look at the numbers. Over the past three seasons, KMart has increased scoring, but has dropped in FG percentage and has increased his turnovers to the point where he gets more turnovers everygame than assists.

by ZaMzAm FiRe on May 21, 2009 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

Or more accurately, it was made by Dean Oliver who now works for the Denver Nuggets as a stats consultant.

Oh -

And Martin is #20 on the list this year. I’m not sure where Ellis is, because I don’t get “ESPN Insider” so I can only look at the top 50 players. Sorry, Monta.

It is interesting to me that playing in such a fast pace high octane system

that Ellis doesn’t get to the FT line more often.

Also

Look at this. Kevin Martin’s stats on Basketball Reference. And Monta Ellis’.

They have multiple stat references, and it’s amazing that they have the traditional stats, as well as the stat geek fanboy stuff you discount. Amazing how that works sometimes.

How is that a fail?

KMart scores 3 points more, but shoots at a lower percentage.

Don't foul shots and 3 point attempts/makes/percentage factor into this equation?

As well as 2 point attempts/makes and percentage factor?

Don't even know why I'm arguing with you

Since you consider the True Shooting stat irrelevant, why are we even discussing this? You don’t seem to care about three point shooting or drawing free throws.

And we haven’t even touched on how a Don Nelson team might inflate the stats of a player.

I’m not saying Monta is not a good, or even a very good player. And I’m not saying that Kevin doesn’t have issues with turnovers and defense.

I just find it laughable that you called Monta a more efficient scorer than Kevin. That’s a joke.

To name an occassion in which the Clippers had first pick, the Grizz had second pick, the Kings took a white UF point guard with the first pick in the draft and it didn’t begin a period of greatness for the organization. I dare you

Great!

1. Do you have aging All Star SG you can to trade for young, underachieving, disgruntled but purely elite talent PF who also happened to be a past #1 NBA pick?
2. Is there a free agent Center available who can contribute leadership along with great ball and passing skills?
3. Does the team have a budget to bring in whole slew of available 2nd tier talents that will gel into the mold of the bench mob?
