Looks like Rubio's agent is trying to get him to Sacramento. One can only hope and pray that he can get it done. If Rubio get's drafted by the KINGS we need to rename Arco .. Casa de Rubio

Interesting...

…reading the comments in Spanish, it seems even the Spanish fans over there wouldn’t mind seeing Ricky here as well.

I got the gist of it from Google Translate. But this translated line made me laugh

Sacramento and Sacramento City team are now a lot while waiting for Ricky.

Thanks to Divac, Peja and Hedo Kings have international appeal.

Thanks to these former Kings the rest of Europe knows about Sacramento. Rubio grew-up watching Kings games and he is more familiar with the Kings then Memphis or Oaklahoma. In Rubio’s eyes Sacramento has more appeal to him and his country men, then Memphis or Oaklahoma. In other words Sacramento has more international appeal…. This is great news!

Agreed there.

This would bring a new wave of international appeal.

Rubio would be THE GUY in Sacramento too

OKC already has Durantula and Memphis is Memphis

The GUY in Memphis has been dead for 31 years

everyone else is nobody.

Did you catch the item about Chris Wallace and Lionel Hollins saying they were going to head to Europe and see Ricky Rubio? They hadn’t seen him at all prior to this. They stated they think they can convince RR that he would be happy in Graceland. Amazing!

by betweentheeyes on May 23, 2009 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

The article talks a lot about the downside of Sacramento being a tiny market. The commentators seem to care more about Rubio’s playing time and him getting the chance to be one of the first options on the team, which I agree is more important for his career than the population of whatever city he plays in. He’ll have a tougher time doing that in LA or Memphis than in Sacramento.

by cbsf on May 22, 2009 7:32 PM PDT reply actions

Obviously thats the main reason

The Kings need a better point guard and the Kings need a potential star player. Ricky Rubio makes too much sense. Also the fact Petrie has actually went out to Spain twice to see Rubio helps because they know Petrie is serious about Rubio and believe in him.

Get Rubio in Sactown. I want to see a lot of lob passes to Kevin, Spencer, Jason and Donte next year.

If I had to guess

his stat line would at least look like this:

11ppg, 4.7apg, 3rpg, 1.1spg

If he's playing on the break

I’d say he’d top 6 assists a game easy. The most unbelievable part of that stat line is the 11 ppg. He’s not really a scorer which is a weakness of his game.

League leader was Stephen Jackson with 3.9 to/g in 39.6 minutes, number 2 was Dwyane Wade with 3.4 to/g in 38.6 minutes. I wouldn’t expect a 19 year old rookie to average 38+ minutes a night and see no way he’d end up with that many TOs. Maybe around 3.

Sacramento is the 16th largest market in the U.S. Compared to OKC at 36th and Memphis at 48th, that’s considerably bigger. People that say Sacramento is a ‘small market’ are either ignorant or deceiving themselves and others.

by kangsfan on May 23, 2009 9:07 AM PDT reply actions

Could this get it done?

What if we did a three-way with OKC and Memphis. We give OKC our 31st pick this year to move down to fourth, we give Memphis the right to exchange second rounders next year to move down to third, and we pick second.

Memphis does it because the get the player they wanted anyway (Thabeet) at a lower salary— they save nearly half a million a year. As long as they can get him, it might not take much to convince them to trade.

OKC doesn’t need more first round picks (do they really want five rookies with guaranteed contracts?), but the 31st pick is a great way to pick someone with potential and stack them in Europe. If they are looking seriously at Harden, they might be willing to take this. If they really want Rubio (again, assuming Memphis is currently planning on taking Thabeet), it might be harder to convince them.

Sacramento does this to get Rubio at a relatively low cost (just the 31st pick plus a potentially lower 2nd rounder next year).

It looks to me like our chances at snagging Rubio in just about any scenario depend on how OKC values Rubio vs everyone else available. I’m not sure I see Memphis making a trade that costs them a shot at both Thabeet and Rubio, but as long as they come away with Thabeet, they’ll be happy.

not Goldberg enough (though I believe you occassionally exemplify the concept)

by betweentheeyes on May 25, 2009 9:19 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm almost convinced this story is true.

I knew once I saw this story came from Marca.

I follow English soccer quite a bit and especially Manchester United and every so often Marca comes out with a story about how United winger Cristiano Ronaldo has already agreed to sign for Spanish team Real Madrid and would be transferred at the next transfer period. They’ve been doing that since the beginning of summer 2008. Two transfer periods ago. Yet the stories are still coming out.

It seems this newspaper doesn’t have a problem spewing out lies and doesn’t have a problem being used as a vehicle for the process known as “tapping up”, the process of name dropping a player and saying that Real Madrid is interested in them for the purposes of piquing the player’s interest and trying to get him to force a move to Madrid through holdouts and threats.

In this case instead of Madrid doing the tapping up, it’s the Rubio camp. And instead of tapping up a player they’re tapping up a team, the Kings. Simple really. They release a story like this, the Kings say “OOH I like the idea of Rubio playing for us” and Memphis and OKC become resigned to losing him so they give up and don’t bother taking him in the draft.

You’ve all figured that part out already. The presence of this particular Spanish newspaper only solidifies that point even further.

by jveezy on May 23, 2009 1:48 PM PDT reply actions

Other newpapers have printed similiar stories.

Draftexpress printed a story that Rubio and his agent prefer LA or Sacramento over Memphis and Oaklahoma. I would tend to agree that the best fit for Rubio would be LA or Sacramento. He’ll sell way more shoes in LA or Sac. Lets face it California has a huge Mexican population that would jump on the Rubio bandwagon.

by AyyJude on May 23, 2009 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know if the Mexican population would necessarily jump on the Rubio bandwagon

but a large Spanish-speaking population would certainly make Rubio feel a lot more comfortable.

I recognize that other sources like DraftExpress have printed similar stories, but coming from other sources it still leaves debate on whether or not this is true or just speculation. From what I’ve seen with Marca in the past, their presence is an absolute verification (to me at least, everyone else seems to have been convinced by the prior stories) that the Rubio camp is actively trying to engineer a move to Sacramento and is now using an all out media assault in order to do this.

Kinda new for us but this type of activity is common practice over in Europe. Marca is almost always involved when Spanish athletes are involved.

All this RR talk is crazy

Jennings is everything RR is and a whole lot more . Superior athlete ,good mechanics ,great court vision ,excellent passer ,nasty crossover ,loves to dish the ball….ah nevermind…you guys go ahead and keep talking about giving up our assets for the long lost Jonas brother

I think not Aykis16

The only slight advantage Rubio has is court vision . Rubio has terrible shooting mechanics and Jennings crossover will be superior to most proven NBA PG’s . Not only is Jennings a pass first ,true PG ,he is also a scoring threat

The way I see it is the Kings don’t need Rubio to be a scoring threat per se. They need him to be like J-Will without all the stupid shots and off court troubles. Scoring can come later when the Kings have him quaterbacking the ball to Martin, Hawes, or Thompson. IMO

by KingsAs49erSharks on May 25, 2009 12:31 AM PDT reply actions

Agreed

Scoring is not what we need. We also have Beno off the bench and he’s a decent scorer. If anything, having Rubio running the show will up everyone else’s scoring, especially since he’s good at getting to the rim and penetrating defenses, hopefully leading to a lot of kickout 3’s for Speed and Cisco.
