Looks like Calathes won't be available at 23 after all.

This isn't terrible news at all
It just means that Calathes will get more exposure between now & whenever. But, a team is likely to draft him in the 1st round anyway because the risk isn’t that great with a low 20’s selection.

You mean draft him and keep his right??
Or draft him in the future??

Draft him this year and keep his rights

If he drops out of the draft then noone can draft him.
If he stays in the draft then we can do that.

He'll still be draft eligible

You are correct.
IT may even be better since we would get his rights and not have to pay him for a while. Then if our #4 does not work out we can bring Calathes over.

This is weird to me
Came out of nowhere. Where was Chad Ford on this one huh?? LOL
I was actually very intriguedby Calathes but I guess he won’t be there for 23, or any other pick. Plenty of PGs in the draft and it looks like the Kings will use the 4th (or 2nd, come home Ricky) to get Beno’s replacement

ugh
damnit. Honestly, the player I was most excited about the Kings possibly getting in the late first round.
damnit.

Good for Nikos.
I would’ve liked him to be on the Kings so my Greek screams could once again be interpreted. Peja could speak Greek, and Vlade knew a little. It was fun talking with them in another language when I met him.
So if I’m not to be mistaken, a team can still draft him, he just won’t be available to play? He hasn’t pulled out of the draft, just signed with another team?

This is bizarre
I really don’t understand. He could have snuck into the teens with good workouts … Now, he’ll be a second, most likely. To make a couple extra million next season.

he’ll make more money when he does come over, if he’s a second round pick.

if he can make it in the nba game
Then yes, over time, he’ll make more money. But he’s gotta be ready to play right out of the gate, which is hard for a pt guard

If he's doing this
as a family/roots kind of thing, I think it’s cool for him – a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Sucks for any team with picks at #23 and #31, though.

similiar in a way to Blake Griffin staying in Norman to play with Taylor
Nick is going overseas, to a very repuatble team, for more money, more experience and an oppurtunity to hang with his big brother, Pat.
He must feel that if he is good enough to have a 3 year commitment in the NBA – and that is only a probability, some mocks have him as a 2nd rounder, than he should perform well for a European club. It is a reasonable move.

If you're OKC
Wouldn’t you want to lock him up with a 1st round pick? (They do have the 25th overall selection.) He would be a nice backup PG to fit with Westbrook.

I like him, but I don't think he's worth a 1st round pick if he's not available
I certainly don’t take him over (for example and not just restricted to PG’s), Patty Mills, Sam Young, Darren Collison, or any other number of players that will be available to play this year.

What about OKC or Chicago?
They might feel differently. After all, they might need a quality backup PG.

Lakers or Cavs, maybe
I don’t recall rebuilding teams spending picks on guys that they know they won’t have access to. I do recall premier teams like San Antonio and the Lakers doing this, but not teams that need bodies and assets. I guess it all comes down to how highly these teams value Calathes. I like him, but not enough to pass over another prospect if he won’t be available this year.

OKC can afford to wait
They did so last year with their 24th pick from Phoenix by taking Serge Ibaka.

Portland did the same type of thing in 2006 and 2007
When they took Joel Freeland, Rudy Fernandez and Petteri Koponen.

Freeland and Rudy look like good picks… Petteri is struggling for playing time, beaten out by Earl Boykins…

I actually agree with you
Hes a legit shooting-guard-sized point and I think a guy like him would pair perfectly with Westbrooks aggressive mentality. He doesn’t need to score to be effective and his size gives you options defensively.
The Thunder have a lot of picks and options this draft.

I would not be surprised if the Thunder fell in love with DeRozan
And simply decided to roll the dice on him. They might be willing to swap the 3rd pick for the 4th pick if that’s the case.

That could be
Derozan and Durant sort of play the same position though, although I guess Derozan could play the 2.

I think they might prefer Harden for that reason. Then again, maybe not.

Don't understand the fascination with this guy
Not that athletic, really not quick enough to play PG in the NBA, then you’re looking at a 6’5" shooting guard who depends on penetrating to be effective, but isn’t that quick.

Yeah, I watched him play against European players his age when he played for the Greek junior national team
He and his teammates sucked. They finished 13 of 16.
He and his agent likely figured he if he could combine a nice deal (net salary) and some good sponsorships in Greece that adds up to being a lottery pick in the NBA – which I have a hard time to believe he would have achieved.
