2009 StR Community Draft Board: Pick #10

And now that the horror of No. 4 has mostly worn off, we're back.

Blake Griffin, Ricky Rubio, Brandon Jennings, Tyreke Evans, Hasheem Thabeet, Stephen Curry, Ty Lawson, James Harden and Jrue Holiday are off the board in the first nine positions on our board.

Reminder: THIS IS NOT A MOCK DRAFT. This is draft board, a list with the order of prospects you'd like to see the Kings pick. In other words, if we were the Kings front office, when our pick came up, we'd take the top name left on our board. So pick your choice, not who you think Petrie or anyone else would choose in a slot.

Explain your choice in the comments, and lobby for who should be added to the next pick's choices. Poll will remain open until 8 AM PDT on Wednesday.

Derozan

I have a feeling he’ll be the best player from the draft after everythings said and done. He reminds me of Josh Howard but he could become so much more.

Agreed

Guy has the physical ability to be a force in this league. Just needs to right team to harness his potential and turn him into a superstar.

Could be the next coming of Vince Carter, or if not developed correctly, a Gerald Green.

Went Teague

He might be a better shooter than Curry. He’s almost certainly better on the break.

I get the feeling after reading David Thorpe's chats

That OKC might look at hard trading down if they can get Stephen Curry in the process.

Stephen Curry is a darkhorse pick for the Kings at #4 if Rubio doesn't fall.

As TZ has pointed out many times Curry is Petrie’s wet-dream. An amazing shooter and scorer and would fit in as a great PG in the Princeton offense. He could also become a star, who knows.

There now I've met the 75 word count. -pookeyguru

I was gonna give you crap

But I held off cuz I knew it would be back. Good call on the choices for 10. I can’t wait to see how this goes when we get into the 20’s. That should be rather intriguing.

I should have voted DeRozan, but I voted Blair anyway. In my heart of hearts, I can’t really see what DeRozan would really do for this team. I nearly voted for Jonny Flynn.

Give us crap? Crap Pook, I'm starting to think like you.

So I booted up the laptop, go to StR and the draft board was up which I was pleased to see because I thought it might have been derailed because of the shock of our draft position.

I read the list, like the list, think to myself, I should vote for DeRozan because everybody gonna vote for him but all the IMG chatters love Blair and I remember how Blair dismembered Thabeeeet so I tell myself, I like Blair here more, crap it’s just a mock draft board, ok so then I voted for Blair and hit submit and return to the comments and see pookeyguru did pretty much the same thing. I’m going back to bed./

Gerald Henderson

I don’t know enough about him, but the few times I did see him I was impressed.

I almost went with Derozan, and think he has tremendous potential – he reminds me a bit of Caron Butler.

Jordan Hill

Hill at 10? Yes. please. That said, I figure that I’m going to get a chance to vote for him at #11…and #12…and…

I'm not sold on Hill

Maybe it’s the way he played against Louisville in the tournament, but he doesn’t seem worth the pick at 10.. He definitely has the skills, but I don’t think he has the intensity to make his teammates better. If I was picking a big at 10, I’d go with Blair over Hill.

Not that I should talk, I picked Terrence Williams..

I'm reading this article by Chad Ford on Hill

It’s pretty interesting. Link

Nice Article

But it’s hard to read between the fluff lines and find something valuable to take away. All the good things that we hear about Hill in this story are anecdotal, redundant, or somewhat irrelevant. He upped his numbers, but that’s to be expected given that Bayless left a huge scoring void when he jumped to the NBA last season. He’s a good rebounder, but we already know that, and in the tourney game against UofL (again, this is a limited sample size, I admit), a game he should have been up for and ready to compete in, he was a nonfactor, getting outhustled and outplayed by Earl Clark and Terrence Williams, two guys who are ranked lower than him in the current draft class.

Again, none of this is to say he isn’t a good player, but I don’t think that he’s a top 10 guy. In my opinion he just doesn’t have enough proven ability to produce with efficiency and persevere under adversity.

I digress, but humor me as I use Hill as a foil to make the case for DeJuan Blair. You pick Blair over Hill and, you get someone with more attitude, an intense character guy, also a rebounding machine with a developing offensive game, but with better numbers than Hill had at the same age, with experience playing in the most defensively challenging conference in the college game (especially for big men). He had to face up to Thabeet/Adrian twice, Earl Clark, Greg Monroe, and Harangody, saving his best stuff for Thabeet and ’Gody (23/22, 22/23 respectively) while Hill was facing Aboya, Brockman and Pendergraph in the Pac-10; not shabby, but not the same level of competition.

I think, overall, that Hill is one of those guys, similar to Earl Clark, who looks great on paper and in workouts but loses something in game situations. A guy like Blair won’t ever be a star, but you know what you’re getting with him, and the rest of the team around him will be better for it.

I went with Teague

But I feel like the “wisdom of the crowds” has already died a painful death with the selection of Jrue Holiday at #9.

Switch "next" for "needs"

and you should be able to read it. It was very tough to read without the correction… sure was

by eduardo_m7 on May 26, 2009 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Eureka!

I see now.

But in seriousness, it’s not that I am claiming to have a surefire handle on this drat, but infatuation with Jrue Holiday is a particular sticking point. I’ve never seen someone do so little and come away with any kind of hype whatsoever, let alone manage to play himself into Sactown Royalty’s 9th favorite player in this draft. As I said elsewhere, the guy did barely more than nothing this past season. How he could beat out guys like Flynn and Teague on the draft board is completely, utterly beyond me.

by nbrans on May 26, 2009 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Understandable

But dismissing other’s choices because YOU don’t think they are correct is a little obnoxious. I don’t think anyone is infaftuated with Holiday; if there’s some infatuation around here is all about Rubio and I’m part of that movement. You may think a lot of people like Holiday because we are talking quite a bit about him but I think this is just because he just had a workout with the Kings. He’s the first “big name” player to come to Sac to workout so that’s why there’s certain buzz.

I did vote for Holiday at 9 because I thought he complimented the players we had and had the potential of becoming a solid PG who had defined skills that would flourish on this team. Am I right?? Not sure, it’ll take years to find out. Are other’s wrong for not going with what I think is right? Of course not. It’s not like Petrie is actually going to use our draft board to pick his players.

If disagreeing with the crowd is obnoxious

We’re all jerks around here at one time or another.

by nbrans on May 26, 2009 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions

The word wisdom got to me

As in “you are wise, but we are not cause we selected Holiday.” You can disagree without trying to sound better than everyone, that’s it

by eduardo_m7 on May 26, 2009 8:02 PM PDT up reply actions

It was more a joke about the concept of "wisdom of the crowds"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisdom_of_the_crowd

The theory is that crowds collectively make better choices than individuals.

Really don’t think I’m better than everyone or anything like that, I just disagree with the choice. I could have said, “I disagree with the choice of Jrue Holiday at #9,” but that would have been boring.

by nbrans on May 26, 2009 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I’d be torn between Teague and Derozan. I think both could be above-average players. Teague looked great early in the year when he had those big games against top ranked teams but of course it’s worrisome that he faded late. I liked how he was able to copy Chris Paul and shoot two handed, lean back jumpers at the front of the rim, a shot that is atypical in a point guard’s repertoire. He seems to have a good bounce to his game, he’s lanky and flexible and he plays alert. Overall he reminded me of Acie Law with better athleticism.

I haven’t seen Derozan compared to Travis Outlaw anywhere but I think they are very similar players if I can say so myself. They even look alike. They’re both 6’8, with long lean frames and I think what defines them is that despite their great athleticism in terms of jumping and running, they’re limited by their inability to attack the rim all the way. As a result their primary offensive move is to shoot pull up jumpers. Derozan got pretty good at hitting them by the end of the season. Until his handle improves—and it’s not horrible, just not versatile enough—I don’t know if he’s ever going to be a stud. He’s not going to be able to get to the free throw line enough, he’s not going to be able to utilize screens, his passing opportunities aren’t going to be plentiful. Still, he comes across as a good teammates, he’s unselfish, a good rebounder, his shooting stroke looks good from mid-range.

DeDe for BPA, DjB for need followed by Teague

Based on mocks and talent grading websites – as I have no idea who is better than whom – the hype machine has DeDe as anywhere from a potential Kobe (beware Eagle Rock) on down. All very ceiling stuff. Based o that, and that alone, sure I give him a #10.

Based on need and the very encouraging words by David Thorpe along with the impressive performance I actually did see in the games this year – DeJuan Blair seems to be a workhouse type player that will probably be a slow defender and undersized at the 4 but with skills – the new Brandon Bass or Jason Maxiell. That would be nice.

Teague is the only other consideration – a large fall from grace – as high as #4 in mocks earlier this year followed by many inconsistent outings and some obvious poor decision making as a point guard on a fastbreak team. Many questions – one of those guys who will either be Aaron Brooks or Luther Head (or worse).

I don’t include the very highly touted Jordan Hill – because Chad Ford placing him at #4 for the Kings just irks me. If GP picks him I love him, if Chad Ford picks him I am irked.
