The Wildcard?
The biggest question (beyond will Rubio slip to #4) is will Washington trade out of the #5 spot and what will it take to move up to that spot.
From what I have read, you keep hearing a late first rounder, possibly a cheap young player, and someone able to take on Etan Thomas' contract. If that's really all it takes, it's down to us and Memphis, and I, for one, would love to trade for the #5 pick.
I believe Thomas' contract is expiring, so while it is taking on more money next year, it doesn't hurt the future cap flexability of the team, so really it comes down to whether you can get the Wizards to bite on just a cap dump and the #23.
If we were to get the #5 pick and Rubio slips to #4, we could probably put together a package of Rubio and Jordan Hill that would tempt the Clips into giving up Griffin. Or, we could even use the pick, packaged with Donte Greene and the first pick in the 2nd (Claver, Mills?) to tempt PHO into dealing Amare.
Coming out of the draft with both Rubio and Stoudemire or Griffin (with the hope we pick up John Wall next year) would be unbelievable.
Is it a stretch? Yes. Probably going to happen? No. But that pick would open up some interesting possibilities.

Thomas's contract is NOT expiring
unless you’re talking about Kenny Thomas.

DX shows it expiring after 2009/10 just like Kenny Thomas
Having both the terrible Thomas contracts on one roster would be quite a feat (and approximately 16mil coming off the books in 2010).

Seems I was mistaken.
What would you trade for the 5 pick?

Worst case scenario is taking a player like...
Jordan Hill, Tyreke Evans, etc.
Best case, use the #5 to trade for a player. PHO seriously would have to consider the #5 and Donte and #31 for Stoudemire (a player that is unhappy and probably going to leave in 2010), especially if we threw in the Thomas’ contracts and they unloaded another undesirable contract.

Too soon to tell
Someone brought up a good point that there isn’t much talent GM’s are comfortable drafting this year. The only warm, fuzzy picks are in the top 3 so the price might be higher this year than most.

No Chance
There is no chance Phoenix will accept that for Amare…… or Washington would accept #23 and #31 for E. Thomas and #5. Those deals would have those GM’s looking for work very soon….. This is how I see it going… We will take Tyreke Evans at #4 if Rubio is gone and just have to see who falls to #23 and #31….. We will then use the approx. $7 million in cap space we will have only if there is a free agent that we consider a bargin for the talent….. Ramon Sessions maybe?

Amar'e and his retinal detachment is a serious injury
The last update is that he is healing slowly and he will remain a risk for re-detachment. He will need to add protective eyewear and it is very likely that his vision will never fully recover.
With one eye not seeing at the same level of the other eye, most likely his depth perception will be effected.
Bottom line: this is a serious injury and very likely a career changer. As a fan, I would prefer not to have that risk, and the expense of obtaining STAT on the Kings.

As a positive twist on a tragic situation
its going to be cool to have another player sport the Horrace Grant glasses.

Maybe not but I didn't come up with this on my own...
I am basing this on what I have heard and read in the rumormill.
Steve Kerr wanted young players/picks and expiring deals for Amare. The #5 pick, Donte Greene and Etan/Kenny Thomas contracts are just that. Furthermore, we were rumored to be a player in the Stoudemire discussions, but they wanted JT and Petrie wouldn’t go there. Jordan Hill would be a similar type of player, and could possibly be better than Shock, so I don’t think it is as far fetched as you make it out to be.
Boston got Ray Allen straight up for the #5 pick, and remember Amare’s value is lessened because of the risk involved in trading for a guy that is set to become a free agent after the season. Team’s aren’t going to give up the farm for a player who could bolt after one season.
As far as Washington goes, I didn’t come up with that one. See Hollinger’s column on espn <a href=“”http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/playoffs/2009/columns/story?columnist=hollinger_john&page=PERDiem-090520" >. " >here. He floats it and he sets the parameters. He shouldn’t have a pro-King bias, and that is what he is stating the #5 pick will fetch.
