Summer Scorecard
Now that we know where our #1 pick is (boo/hiss) I thought it would be interesting to lay out my hopes and expectations for the summer and see how many (if any) our beloved GM achieves. I also think its much more fun to do this now, and then look back on it, rather than just second guess later.
The Coach
We've seen a lot of names go by, some interviews have been conducted, here's my evaluation of the candidates:
- 3pts - Messina + veteran assistant, Eddie Jordan + an assistant that we think adds up to better defense
- 2pts - Thibideau + veteran assistant
- 1pt - Any of the guys above with questionable assistants or Jeff Van Gundy
- -1 - Rambis, not sure why he deserves a chance
- -2 - Porter, Westphal, Silas, etc, these guys seem like placeholders that don't add much to me
- -3 - any candidate plausibly connected to the Maloofs
- -5 - Whisenant
- -10 - Avery Johnson, because everyone is allowed one bout of irrationality in their FanPost
I like the concept of bringing a great Euro coach over, if he had the right support in place. Jordan or Thibideau I could also feel pretty good about, again if they put the right people around them. My most important criteria for the coach is they have to have a legit plan that vibes with GP, be effective at developing players and teaching their plan and that they play a modern style of basketball.
Beyond those three candidates it seems like a wasteland of retreads and people I'm not convinced are right for us.
The #4 Pick
It still hurts a little to write that, but hey, it is what it is.
- 5pts - GP calls the other GMs bluff and Rubio falls to us
- 2pts - we figure out how to get Rubio for a reasonable price
- 0pts - GP makes the #4 pick
- -2pts - that pick is Thabeet (ok I lied, I get 2 irrational dislikes)
Cap Management
We've made some strides on our salary situation, but still have some major issues. Here are the priorities as I see them:
- 5pts - We find a way to get rid of Beno and get back a 1-2 year contract
- 5pts - We dump Nocioni for expiring contracts
- 4pts - We find a way to land a young core piece for a reasonable long-term deal at a position we need
- 2pts - We dump Nocioni for a 2 year contract of a contributing player
- 1pt - We spend no more than $3mil per year on a roll of the dice with a young talented guy
- 0pts - We move K9
- -3pts - We sign a veteran for more than one year for more than $2mil a year
As you can see, I think Beno will be almost impossible to move. There was a rumor we could move Nocioni for expirings, if that possible we have to do it. He's redundant with Cisco and neither are NBA starters. Moving Nocioni out the door paves the way for landing that scoring, defending wing player to complement Kevin Martin that many on these boards say is easy to find. If we find a way to add a core piece who's young, say Trevor Ariza or Marvin Williams, I'll be very happy.
Team Building
In my opinion, we have 4 players that matter: Martin, Hawes, JT & Garcia. Maybe Donte plays his way onto the list; I'm not advocating getting rid of him. The #4 pick obviously should be another piece.
- +5 - With our other two picks, Petrie lands two guys we plausibly think would be in the top 8 of a good team eventually
- +3 - We trade up and draft a guy that fits well
- +1 - One of our two lower picks fits
- -2 - Petrie rolls the dice on a shooting guard and skilled center that does what Spencer does but worse
We need more good basketball players, which seems obvious, but I don't think it is. We're not the team that needs a super marksman 3 point specialist. We don't need a big guy that is a specialist. We need to roll the dice on guys who's game can grow. I love that Petrie is holding the dice; I just want him focusing on the right kind of guy.
---
So that would be my plan for the offseason. I'm hoping Petrie finds a way to get about 10 points in this competely arbitrary and just for fun system. Note that points for creativity and extra credit are available! I look forward to a potential surprise or two this summer. One way or another it should be fun.
Fire away.

Good encapsulation of what is going on this offseason.
I would argue that Thabeet should be positive points as he’s a defensive minded center that focuses on a skill set that none of our other core players currently has. As far as the cap space goes, it will be really hard to judge based on a points system alone as a lot of contract swaps can be extremely arbitrary. We also may impact our cap by trading up to #2 for Rubio i.e. swap K9 for Jaric, which would be a positive roster room that would impact our salary negatively.
There now I've met the 75 word count. -pookeyguru
I've heard that Jaric idea before
but imagine having Beno and Jaric on the same roster! And for the next several years no less.
The terror
Wouldn’t that be kind of like having John Salmons and Kenny Thomas on the same roster?

sorry
I don’t know who that is.
I didn’t do the points as anything even remotely serious, only to give some perspective to my opinion of the relative importance of different possibilities.

I have such high hopes for this summer for what the team can be going into the 09-10 season. The #4 pick still hurts but there is so much room for improvement that unless something really insane happens we should be in the positive side of your points. I like that it’s in four parts because not one part is going to turn it around as well.
All I know now though is that one more month of this until we know about the draft and who knows at this rate of the coach search is killing me. I had this to look forward to when the season was going on but now that it is here what now!
Nice work, great FanPost
I will note that I personally like Rambis because he reportedly studied the Hades out of the Thibodeau’s defense over the summer, and implemented it for the Lakers. Lakers ended up No. 6 in team defense, after spending much of the year top 3. Not a small matter, considering he was dealt Pau Gasol in the middle and the Corpse Formerly Known as Derek Fisher at the point.
This is not a rhetorical question
How was Rambis’s tenure as head coach in LA perceived? He won a good percentage of his games (admittedly, with a totally stacked team); and it’s not exactly a vote of no confidence to be replaced in favor of Phil Jackson.
I would not cry one iota about Rambis
I’d be more concerned about Thibodeau though.

No on Rambis
I don’t think he can coach a young, inexperienced team. This Kings team will require an exorbitant amount of patience and guidance. I think Rambis’s hard line approach would wear out fast. He’d be perfect for a team like the Atlanta Hawks. He’d give their underachieving talent a huge kick in the ass and make sure they come out and perform to their best each night. Also, teach them how to man up in big time games. Lessons this Kings team is probably 2 years away from needing to learn.
Based on this past years perfomance
… the Kings could use a kick in the ass sooner rather than later.
Add to "Team Building"
+2pts: A steady stream of stories about our young guys’ workout regimens that give us a good feeling about next year.
+1 extra point: Thompson trains with Thorpe and gets rave reviews.
-1pt: The only thing we hear about Donté is his next prank.
-3pts: Somebody gets hurt in summer league.
Nice post
I strongly agree with the first of your irrational dislikes (Avery) and
strongly disagree with the 2nd (Thabeet would be a dream pick if available in this draft at #4)
Can’t put more thought into this right now due to crazy work stuff in a different time-zone

And when the workload gets really crazy, he ends up just not posting here. Either that, or he’s really depressed.

I know we disagree about Thabeet, that’s why I labeled my dislike irrational, lots of people I respect want the guy, so I certainly am acknowledging I could be wrong.
I’m sure if we do draft him, it will be a minute or two of annoyance for me, and then rooting my brains out for him. I mean, we rooted for Ron Artest, that pretty much says it all.

Agreed
As much as I have joked about Thabeet, I will be on his bandwagon the moment (or maybe the moment after) we draft him.

I will go through the 5 stages of Petrie drafting
that wonderful post by Section214.
And then I will read it again.
Then I will wonder what number he will wear on the Kings and eagerly look forward to his first blocked shots and dunks.
Being a fan makes me such a team slut. (i.e. I can’t stand that guy – what! he is a King now? But… well.. the dude is freakin’ awesome!)
