Preliminary draft measurements in! **Update Alert: All Stats Now UP!**

DraftExpress has just posted early height/weight/wingspan/reach results for the projected first rounders. There is more to come but here are some highlites.

  • Blake Griffin- 6'-8.5" w/o shoes 6'-10" w/ shoes. 7'-4" with a proper fro...and shoes
  • Hasheem Thabeet- 7'-1.25" w/o 7'-2.5" w/.   Duh.
  • Tyler Hansbrough- 6'-8.25" w/o 6'-9.5" w/.    OMG!
  • Lawson, Flynn, Mills all measure in at 5'-11.25 w/o- Johnny Flynn wears taller shoes than the other two.
  • DeJuan Blair- 6'-5.25" w/o 6'-6.5" w/.    OUCH!

More stats are coming but this is a good start. FYI, Jordan Hill is a big man as is BJ Mullens.

Updated OMGs.

Johnny Flynn- 40 inch vert- wow.

Holy Beaubois Batman- 39" to go with that 6'-9.75" wingspan- sounds like the next Barbosa.

Chase Budinger = Joe Alexander

Blake Griffin = two foot jumper (32" standing, 35.5" max)

Vince Carter (43") > Demar Derozan (38.5")

Geez

Check DeJuan Blair’s wingspan. Dude can probably tie his shoes without bending over.

I find it so hard to believe

that Hansborough is basically as tall as Griffin. That blows my mind. I would’ve sworn that he was two inches shorter when I watched them shake hands after the tourney game.

by furious.d on May 29, 2009 10:26 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Wingspan is about the same as well

Griffin’s got him by a ton in athleticism though.

by otis29 on May 29, 2009 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Makes me feel vindicated

Griffin will always have to play next to a quality shot blocker to be as effective as he could be. I think the Clippers are an absolute terrific fit for him. Despite what people feel about the Clippers, they have the right talent to help Blake Griffin perhaps make that Karl Malone comparison come true.

Here’s another point: When the Jazz signed Malone, they were on the rocks. Maybe this will make Donald Sterling come into the land of real ownership.

I think

Griffin will be average to above average for a PF at blocking shots given 6 fouls and not having as much pressure on him as he did at the NCAA level to always be on the floor. I’m curious…how is his height being verified as well taller than rumored vindicate any sort of doubts you had regarding his shot blocking?

I never recall Malone being a great defender or shot blocker. He would punish you on the offensive end, run the floor and wear you down. But I never saw him lock down guys like Barkley, Duncan, KG or Webber. That’s not to say that he was a crappy defender. It is to say that he didn’t make his reputation on the defensive end.

This is always my favorite pre draft piece of info

It concludes much of the speculation about a players height and length, and gives each a certain level of rank based purely on physical dimensions.

Being responsible and reasonable while interpreting these numbers to tear down/ build up a draft candidate is no easier. Especially when you factor in those “intangibles”. For what they are though, these numbers are great because they don’t lie.

Nice wingspan on Flynn. He is a bit taller than many had feared, it seems.

Does Hansborough's measurement

increase anyones interest?

I doubt he’d be available at 23 now, but if he was he’d be hard to pass on.

he is the opposite of all the rest of the picks

as he has nothing but down hype – it is the opposite of bust potential.

The guy is the leading scorer in UNC history – hard to compare as he is post Dean Smith – but he HAS to have some skills. Whether or not they translate will remain to be seen. The usual rejoinder fits here: If GP thinks he is a good grab at the #23 (or #31) than so be it.

by betweentheeyes on May 29, 2009 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting comment.
as he has nothing but down hype – it is the opposite of bust potential.

My interpretation of this makes him seem like a thankless pick.

If Hansborough is available (at 23 or 31), we pick him and he does well, it’s because he should have(considering his pedigree and legitimate heighth for a PF). If he’s picked and busts, the writing was on the wall and Petrie takes a Daniel Russo crane-kick to the tuna tackle for drafting poorly.

by BPaoliano on May 30, 2009 8:13 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Respectfully disagree

Your point has merit, but I see it this way -

If we take him and he succeeds, then we were the only franchise smart enough to see his true worth. If he fails, it’s just another #23 or #31 pick that didn’t make it in the NBA.

For the record

I agree with the way you see it, section. In my original post I was just reacting to the way I interpreted bte’s blockquoted comment.

IMO, after measurements, I think TH would be a steal at 23 let alone 31. We could definitely use some depth in the frontcourt and Hansborough’s drive, skills and winning pedigree would be a valuable asset. His only knock all along was his (supposed 6’ 7") height.

Hansbrough has a wingspan one (angry) inch higher than Blake Griffin

it is his discombobulated movements that scare everyone.

My point is that he is underhyped. He is expected to fail at the next level. Any success he has would be a “surprise” and any credit he is given will minimize his abilities and speak to his effort (which, with desire, brains and attitude IS an ability – too many don’t have those qualities, though in fairness, it takes a bit of all of those qualities to make it this far).

Would this be a reason to draft him? Could be be Luis Scola, American-style? It is part of the great debate. Both sides have plenty of examples of success and failure – the Duke guys (Laettner, Parks, JJ Redick), the oft named Mark Mad Dog Madsen, hey remember the great Indiana point guard Steve Alford? And pigmentation aside those are only the lighter ones – it is not a Caucasian fraternity solely.

It is hard to bet against this guy and it is hard to place money on him at the same time. I am glad my reputation isn’t riding on it.

I think Hansbrough would be a great pick in the twenties. He has his limitations, his lowpost game may not translate to the nba, he’s never going to be good defensively but he has the tools to be a rotation player. His outside shot isn’t bad so he’ll be able to play pick and pops. A backup big who can hit a few outside shots a game is valuable. He’ll also be able to rebound, at least offensively. He’s too aggressive and energetic and his hands too strong for him not to. I have almost no doubt that there is going to be some point where he keeps a possession alive multiple times and he becomes instantly very likeable. There’s going to be a Psych T cheering section. He’ll also be able to put a few of those offensive boards back in. So boards, energy and outside shooting—that isn’t a bad package for a role-playing power forward.

Hmm
his lowpost game may not translate to the nba, he’s never going to be good defensively

Isn’t that the opposite of what we need from the ideal third big off the bench for us? He may instill some sort of amazing work ethic but unless he can translate even a little of his post game to the NBA I think I’d pass on Hansbrough.

He’d probably be picked before the 23rd pick anyways.

Why do you think Hansbrough won't be able to play defense?

Sure, he might not be a shot blocker but a guy who works as hard as he does should have no problem being a solid to good position defender. Also, good defensive teams rebound- something I see Hansbrough doing well at the next level.

Was Thabeet injured

or did he just choose not to complete the testing beyond the measurements or have they just not put his numbers in yet? If he chose not to, that would have to be a red flag of some sort, wouldn’t it?

I'm not sure it matters Kfan

They can figure out how quickly he can move laterally & all that. I really don’t. For other players yeah, but not necessarily him perse.

But how many backup bigs have great post games? All I was saying was that i don’t think his entire game will translate to the nba so instead of scoring so much on those awkward, half-turn post moves, he’ll rely on other things, like shooting the mid-range jumper he showed this season and putting back offensive boards. All that’s important is if he has ways to contribute coming off the bench.
