A long time NBA fan, fairly long time Kings fan. THis season there were some things that led me to not watch as much. (The Kings were lousy, little league, and 2 other kids taking up a lot of time) But basically I have to ask. What is it about Hawes that everyone loves so much? His stats are decent, 11 points and 7 rebs per game. Am I missing lots of something that make him such an important piece of this teams future?
He does not overwhelm me with his game, he seems to settle for jump shots too early and often, his FT% is well below passable. He seems (to me I remind you) to complain to the officials way too much. I may be very wrong, I admit I haven't watched 1/20th as much basketball this season as usual...I just don't get the love for this guy. His shooting percentage will be lower than it should be, if JT gets more looks around the basket. This will of course put Hawes further away from the hoop, and his FT attempts will most likely stay where they are. (136 attempts, Tied for 32nd among Centers) I would like to see him more involved around the hoop, although with JT there, that may clog up the works a bit. This is no means a complete analysis of Hawes' game, just some preliminary opinions.
As for the PG situation, I would rather have Evans or Holliday than Rubio. I know Rubio is the favorite here, as well as a youtube sensation, and by all accounts a genius at getting the ball where it needs to be. But with this roster, I would rather have an athletic, quick PG that can handle other PGs defensively. This team isn't going anywhere for a year or 2 at minimum. Many will say, that gives Rubio a chanve to fix his shooting, maybe develop; a little more athleticism. I say, take someone that already has those qualities, run this team a little more, push up the tempo, the best way for inferior teams to compete on a limited basis, is to run and press. Holliday and Evans fit that mold the best. In my opinion of course.
As always, I welcome your thoughts.
