The Unconsensus No. 1 Pick
I don't think I'm the only person completely amazed that after two full days of voting, some 650 ballots cast, Blake Griffin and Ricky Rubio finished tied. Like, perfectly tied. Not a statistical dead heat. Not within a few hanging chads. Tied. Actually tied.
There is no Sactown Royalty Consensus No. 1 pick right now. So we'll move on to No. 3 a bit later today, and run that to Friday morning. Once we get closer to the draft, we'll have another official ballot between Griffin and Rubio.
Amazing.

I'm amazed too
Rubio had won the prior 2 polls, but those were both well before Griffin had gotten a ton more exposure and hype as the “consensus” first overall pick in every mock draft available to every Kings fan (knowledgable and otherwise). I really thought Griffin would run away with this thing because simply more fans (and not necessarily StR regulars who do not make up the majority of the fanbase) know who Griffin is. Hell, one of the editors of this very site cited his more familiarity with Griffin as his choice. And, he is surely not someone to let anyone else do his thinking for him.
In short, the argument of Rubio vs Griffin is quite amazing because it really, especially if you judge it by the poll, has completely polarized a fanbase around here. Amazing.

Apart from a few oddballs
I think most of us who are either in the Rubio or Griffin camp still see this as a close call. In that, they won’t be hugely upset if we end up with one or the other. I know that’s the case for me, and it might explain the closeness of the vote.
Rubio fits a clear need for the team, he seems to have a huge upside, and I think he reminds many of us of a guy that would have fit in well with the late 90’s, early ‘00 Kings. Problem is, there isn’t a whole lot of data or gametape we can use to analyze him.
Because of the growth of our young frontcourt, Griffin doesn’t seem to fit the needs of this team as much as a top-flight PG would. But his athleticism and skill, as well as nearly historic numbers from his college career, make it difficult to pass him up. I think even the most ardent Rubio supporters might be scared of passing up a guy that COULD (yes, I said could) be an all-time great.
Should the team be lucky enough to garner the #1 pick, I’ll be happy with whomever is chosen – since Geoff Petrie will be doing the choosing. There’s a lot of issues I get worked up on at this board, but this isn’t really one of them. Kings management can’t control the ping pong balls, and even if we end up with the #4 pick, I know Petrie will make a solid choice.
The new coach, potential trades or free agent signings – those are a whole different animal, as I feel Petrie has been pretty hit or miss the last few years in those regards.

I like Griffin for what I think he is, and Rubio for what I hpe he is. If we have the opportunity to draft either guy I will be thrilled. If we are given the opportunity to choose between them, I will happily defer to GP’s expertise. And if GP picks Thabeet or Evans or someone else with the 1st pick, I lustily anticipate the impending draft thread.

Oh man
We’d be burning the midnight oil on that thread. Similar to the last two years, I’d expect inital anger, followed by resignation, followed by cautious optimism, followed by “what the f#ck are we bitching about, Geoff Petrie baby!”.

97% of the vote
was for Griffin/Rubio, 3% for the “field.” That is amazing.

Given the fact that we are the clowns that are voting?
I’d say about 100%.

It is not a close call...
The close call would be whether Rubio deserves to be the 4th pick. In retrospect I think the answer is more likely than not that he shouldn’t have been even that, and certainly more likely should be 3 or 4 than should be 2 or 1.
