"When we do get a call, Gavin or myself, we just ask them to get a hold of Geoff and that Geoff would be happy to talk to them, and then Geoff and that particular candidate can go from there. That's what I tell them. ... I don't turn anybody down. I think if somebody calls us, and they're interested enough to make the call, what I usually tell them is that Geoff is making the decision, he's the president of basketball operations, and you have to square it with him and go through him."

That's right!

“We’re the billionaires without secretaries who answer our own phones!”

Do they put their cell numbers on billboards or something?

Why don’t I believe anything these guys say any more?

To be fair

I think it’s entirely possible that coaching candidates get hold of the Maloofs’ cell numbers. I’ve found that as a general rule people are perfectly willing to give up someone else’s cell phone number to pretty much anyone who asks.

My guess would be that there are a LOT of people in sports/entertainment/Vegas who have their numbers. For some, it’s a badge of honor to have hundreds of contacts in their phones or on facebook, whether they actually know or like the people or not.

I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt here. Joe could have just ignored the question, but instead he reaffirmed publicly that the coaching decision was in Petrie’s hands.

Ok, people, let's generate all the good Karma we can until May 19. Then you can go back to your shallow and empty lifestyles.

Agreed

If a top flight coach on any level (or his “people”) call to speak with the Maloof’s, I’m betting that the call gets through.

A few years ago I had an issue with my seats that could not be resolved at the associate level. Joe Maloof called me personally and helped to solve the issue. Gaining access to these guys has never been the problem. Getting them to defer to Geoff Petrie’s expertise is the ongoing challenge.

This passes the smell test

It seems like they’re trying to reassure fans that Geoff Petrie is in fact control. They seem to be GOING OUT OF THEIR WAY in fact to show that.

Yes.

I’ve said this before, I’ve always felt the Maloofs have gotten a bad rap. But they’ve done a lot for the organization. More good than bad.

by Aykis16 on May 9, 2009 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Definitely

The Maloofs are great for basketball, as are guys like Cuban. I think the Maloofs bought the team, experienced success, never got as far as they wanted to, started to believe they knew the game as well as their casino business, made/forced some bad decisions, learned their lesson (hopefully), and now realize that basketball decisions should be left up to the guys they pay to run that side of the organization.

I mean if we were billionaire team owners, wouldn’t we probably be susceptible to the same types of impulses and desire to be more hands-on than we should be? The key is learning to respect the balance of knowing the business and knowing the game.

I know I would be

The thing about owners like the Maloofs and Cuban are that they’re not just owners but actual fans of their team. It must be extremely frustrating for them to see their team struggling, just like it is for us. Only difference is they actually can do something about it.

by Aykis16 on May 9, 2009 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it shows that the Maloof's (or Joe & Gavin) are playing the role of willing ambassador

while leaving the basketball decisions to Petrie and the basketball people. Best of all worlds here if you ask me.

This is exactly what we've wanted to hear from them

And now people are bashing them when they say it? These guys just can’t seem to win with Kings fans anymore. What the deuce is he supposed to say about being called by coaches or agents?

Hopefully if they ask Gavin this question he’ll say he doesn’t answer any unknown numbers for fear that it might be a prospective coach and that he refuses to talk to any coaches until Geoff brings them to their office to sign a contract.

It reminds me

of the beating that Bob Lurie used to take from Giants fans. The same Bob Lurie that kept the team from relocating to Denver at the 11th hour.

Has anyone stoppedt to think how bad this franchise was before the Maloof’s became involved? Lukenbill was a pioneer, and there should be a statue honoring him somewhere, but this franchise is probably long gone by now if it were not for the Maloof’s. They are far from perfect, but sometimes they take more than fair share of public crap. On the other hand, they have put themselves more into the public eye, and that can make you a juicier target (look at how much more crap Mark Cuban gives and takes than the owner of the Celtics…I don’t even know who owns the Celtics).

Absolutely

An unbiased look at the big picture should lead one to believe that we are actually in pretty good hands with the Maloof family

Thank you

An that is the polar opposite of Cuban or the Maloof’s. Owner of the world champs and I don’t know who he is…I also did not know of him when they were a laughing stock.

Yeah but you know who Glen Taylor is...

And Jerry Reinsdorf is….

I bet most fans don't know who Glen Taylor is (unless they are fans of the Wolves)

Maybe Reinsdorf, but my parents wouldn’t know who owns the Knicks or Lakers or Kings for that matter.

You being an expert on franchise history, let me ask you

Have the Maloofs ever been caught openly lying to the fans? I know they can be overly open sometimes about their opinion and occasionally put the foot in their mouth , but I can’t remember any lying.

by HighTops on May 9, 2009 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions

Not that I can remember

And this is not to give them a free pass. They were certainly not in lock step with the city as it pertained to the railyard development, and that in itself was OK. But the timing of the infamous Carl’s Jr. add certrainly cast them in a different light, and they have no one to blame for that but themselves.

They are not perfect by any means, but ask Clips or Griz fans if they would swap for the Maloof’s today. For that matter, ask Bulls fans, Dubs fans, and probably a lot of other fans.

ditto, and

thanks for saying it…. the Maloofs are terrific NBA owners…not without mistakes, but Sac is lucky to have them. Their errors have been caused by a desire to bring us a winning product (artest, muss, theus), not to save money, not to move the team, not squeeze every nickel from the fans. The boyz are saying exactly what we want them to say, namely that basketball decisions are in GP’s hands, can’t we just say “thank you.”

by longtimelistenerfirsttimecaller on May 9, 2009 9:28 AM PDT reply actions

I agree with the sentiments

Kings fans are lucky to have the Maloofs here. Never forget Jim Thomas.

by Tom Ziller on May 9, 2009 9:57 AM PDT reply actions

I agree with them

But on the other hand, which Jim Thomas? The one who approved the trade for Webber and hired Adelman? Or the one who preceded that. (And the one who hired Geoff Petrie. Or didn’t fire Jerry Reynolds.)

Agree with most of the comments as well

I do believe Joe in this matter and don’t really understand why they have such a bad rap with a lot of the fans. They do make their mistakes and get inolved a little too much but that’s just because they have an invested interest in the situation. I trust them that they are letting Petrie make the decisions now and look forward to what’s going to happen.

While i wasn’t a fan for the Jim Thomas era, I trust everyone and believe that we should appreciate the Maloofs for what they’ve done for the organization.

On a side note, I thought it was ridiculous and disrespectful when they got booed during the Webber retirement ceremony

by eduardo_m7 on May 9, 2009 1:08 PM PDT reply actions

Like 214 said above

They live and die by the sword of publicity. It seems that their success in the entertainment business has shown them the value of putting themselves in the spotlight. Their name is a brand, and they are the faces of that brand. That makes them extremely easy to criticize when the team fails.

It seems like they’re now learning that people will accept them as the faces of the franchise – without blaming them for its poor basketball product – if they make it clear that they are allowing Geoff Petrie to do his job as President of Basketball Operations. Hopefully they’re not just paying lip service to this notion, but the re-hiring of Coachie and mid-season trades seem like good signs to me.

The only major problem I've had with the Maloofs is when Joe opened his mouth during the Reggie situation

and pretty much cut his legs off from under him. That and driving Rick Adelman away and hiring Muss and Reggie. And really, I’m not capping them, that’s my major complaint in 12(?) years of ownership.

To really appreciate the Maloofs all you have to do is to go to any of the dub web sites where the only subject of discussion is not the upcoming draft but how bad the ownership;Chris Cohan, management; team president Robert Rowell, coach; Nellie and GM are. They would be bitching about the GM more except nobody knows who he is.

The Maloofs are not without their faults but they are much better then many other owners ie, we could be owned by Donald Sterling who has kept the Clippers in a state of perpetual mediocrity or Robert Sarver, currently dismantling the Phoenix Suns. At the end of the day, the Maloofs are the only reason that the Kings are still in Sacramento and why we got to be good enough to notice how bad we are now.
