Open Playoff Thread
Sorry if there is one out there that I missed...and moderators, feel free to replace this with something more official. But we really need another open playoff thread.
Bummer for Dallas today, they got the screwjob at the end. It looked pretty clear to me that the Dallas player was trying to use their extra foul on Carmelo prior to him making the game winning three.
I eagerly anticipate Cuban's next post to his blog, and the subsequent enormous fine the NBA will dole out. He appeared fairly homicidal on the court after the game.

I don't care about the Atl-Cle game today
I’m ignoring it. Does that make me a bad basketball fan? Absolutely.

Brings up an interesting question
Does it hurt Cleveland’s chances to win the whole thing if they don’t get tested in the first few rounds?
Question: What kind of bear is best?

We won't know that answer until they win or won't
Problem with punditry is that we sometimes spend so much time looking for answers that we can’t ever come up with.
Who knows? Maybe Atl has got a comeback in them. I don’t think Orlando can take Cleveland beyond 6, but I’ve been fooled before.

Hollinger
believes heavily in margin of victory, and I can see why. Not having to fight through these extended series, Cleaveland is going to be well rested and very confident.
For a team whose only end-of-game philosophy is give-the-effin-ball-to-Bron-Bron, I doubt practicing clutch plays is going to matter. Plus, now no one’s going to have tape of Cleaveland’s crunch time gameplan, so it adds an element of surprise.

Boston had to
play 20 playoff games before getting into the finals – and were still able to dispatch LA in 6 games. Boston’s margins of victory were not impressive; they got blown out almost as much as they blew out their opponents (awkward sentence).
You also mentioned the “well-rested” theory, which I have always disagreed with. To put it into perspective, the recommended exercise regimen for ideal health from most health institues is 30 minutes of rigorous exercise a day. In the playoffs – even with 7 day series – players “exercise” for about 40 minutes every other day – with several 2 day or more breaks in between games and also a great many breaks during the game.
So the whole idea of a team being more “well-rested” as determined by how many playoff games a team went through is wrong-headed. The only potential negative of having to play extra games is due to possible bruising/injuries due to the physical nature of the game.
by thelettere on May 10, 2009 8:08 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
A basketball game is hardly "rigorous"
I’d say it’s a little tougher. Plus, they have practices between games and shootaround before games. I think the whole well-rested thing is really a mental issue. Having several days off can cause teams to get out of basketball mode. Sure, the practice in the mean time but no one plays playoff style basketball during practice (ie physical play, hard fouls). Some teams don’t turn it back on after a long break (the [redacted]) as well as others do (the Cavs).

It all depends on how the react to the rest in my opinion
they had several days off and just spanked the Hawks. The [redacted] had several days off and got beat in their first game against Houston. The Cavaliers had an amazing season and the funny thing is that they are really peaking here in the playoffs when it matters. If/When they meet in the Finals I don’t see the Lakers stopping the Cavs. They’ll do a good job of making it rough for Kobe, but who stops Lebron?

I think Kobe is starting to show signs of decline
he’s not getting to the line like he used to. He’s settling for jumpers way more than in the past. He’s still very good, but not as good.

They are playing good D, but
Kobe Bryant FTA/G for the last 3 seasons:
‘06-’07 – 10.0 FTAs per game
‘07-’08 – 9.0 FTAs per game
‘08-’09 – 6.9 FTAs per game
At the height of his game, Battier couldn’t stop him, Artest couldn’t stop him, nobody could stop him.
Now, good D by Battier and Artest with no Yao to protect the rim and he can’t even get one FTA? Looks like decline to me.

The playoffs are not a fan of Yao Ming
Isn’t this the first of the past three years he has even played in the postseason? And, not even caring who wins the Denver/Dallas series (well, maybe I do, Denver could make the Lakers sweat a bit, maybe even beat them), I get so frustrated with the officiating. I don’t care much for Mark Cuban, but I am interested to hear from him and I think he will have every right to say whatever it is he says. I feel bad for all the women who have sons/husbands that are Mavericks fans because it will be one crappy Mother’s Day for them.

So did Dallas really get screwed?
or did they screw themselves?
I’m sorry but that no call was bullshit, but so was that intentional foul. If you want to do an intentional foul you lock them up, you don’t let them just bump into you.

by vfettke on May 9, 2009 10:29 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
They screwed themselves. I’m sure Dallas fans will complain about the lack of a whistle, but the Mavs have nobody to blame but themselves for allowing themselves to be put in that situation.
On Denver’s previous possession, Carmelo streaked down the lane for an uncontested dunk with 28 seconds left. The Mavs put up no defensive pressure at all; by scoring this quickly, the Nuggets enabled themselves to play honest defense and play for another possession. If the Mavs had played any defense whatsoever and caused 4 more seconds to elapse, they probably would’ve won the game.
With Nene, Birdman and JR Smith playing as poorly as they did, the Mavericks should’ve executed well enough to not leave things up to chance.
by jeremy548 on May 9, 2009 10:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ya the no call was bullshit
But even the Mavs fans are saying the Mavs shouldn’t have even been in that position in the first place, especially in what was essentially a must-win game for them.

Didn't see the foul
Wright bumped him then backed away in the classic “I didn’t touch him” fashion. If that’s your intentional foul, then you deserve to lose.
by LPKingsFan on May 10, 2009 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That wasn't a bump
He reached all the way across the body and hacked at him – the replay clearly showed a decent amount of contact. According to Wright, he then threw up his arms because he didn’t want them to call it in the act of shooting.
Hell, the NBA even said that the officials missed the call.
Question: What kind of bear is best?
by otis29 on May 10, 2009 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wright can say whatever he wants after the fact
but it looked the way it did, and they called it the way they did. I find it odd that the NBA apologizes for this call, but not the myriad other more egregious ones, in my mind.

Just saw the play after reading so much about it
and yes it was a foul, but Wright should have fouled hard and tied him out. He had chances and he made a horrible play. It was a bad call but I blame Wright and the Mavs as much as I blame the refs
by eduardo_m7 on May 10, 2009 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i dunno
can’t win for losing – the refs have been calling them tight, that game had 61 fouls called already – it is the playoffs and many hard fouls have resulted in flagrant 2 suspensions, he was near the Nug bench.
It is easy to criticize now but if he fouled him harder and they awarded shots (they had a foul to give) we would be critical of that as well. Missed call, it sucks for the Mavs – the NBA admitted it because if you have people fouling harder and causing injury they will use it as a “I didn’t want to foul too soft”.
I thought Rick Carlisle was gracious in defeat – and people will criticize that as well.
by betweentheeyes on May 10, 2009 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No-call
Listen, the refs have been getting new assholes ripped throughout the playoffs for calls made at the end of the game. They’ve heard, “don’t decide the game, let them play, allow a little more contact.” So the ref let them play. It was the correct non-call. You let the players decide the game.
As has been mentioned, you wrap the guy up. If that was the intentional foul, it was absolutely terrible.
And finally, if you have a foul to give, and you play on using it in that way, it’s the coach’s responsibility to talk to the ref. You can say, “Hey, we’ve got a foul to give, and we’re going to use it on this play.” Then the ref becomes less reluctant to make that call.
Mavs have themselves to blame. Don’t blame the refs.
Never forget: I am a complete idiot
by Exhibit G on May 11, 2009 7:23 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Completely disagree
The situation was pretty clear cut. The official should have some idea that the Mavs had a foul to give. I’ve heard people mention that the referee closest to the play had to watch the feet, and that’s why he missed the foul. My question is – wouldn’t that always be the case? Wouldn’t he have missed the foul even if Wright had fouled him harder?
My guess is that another official should have made the foul call, not Wunderlich?
Having said that, this isn’t an either or situation. Wright could have wrapped Carmelo up, Carlisle could have made sure the referees knew they intended to foul, and the officials screwed up by missing the call.
Sorry ExG, but that first paragraph is nutty. Are you saying in your first paragraph that a team with a three point lead shouldn’t be allowed to intentionally foul in the waning seconds of the game if they have a foul to give? You see that all year long in the NBA, and it’s generally an accepted practice.
Question: What kind of bear is best?
by otis29 on May 11, 2009 8:56 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
First paragraph
Sorry, reading it again it is not very clear.
What I was trying to say was this:
There has been a lot of criticism of refs recently. There’s a general frustration that refs have made questionable calls at the end of games. Game-changing decisions. The prevaling sentiment has been “let them play” rather than having the ref decide the game. Looking at it in slow-motion, the foul seems pretty clear. In the moment could be a totally different story. And the last thing the ref wants to do, given all the recent criticism, is to call a foul that essentially decides the game.
Now, if that call is obvious and unavoidable (like a Wright giving Carmelo a big hug), the ref makes the call. Wright swats at the ball, bumps ‘Melo, and then throws his arms up in the classic "I didn’t so anything" NBA pose. If he makes that call, you’d hear another round of angry fans, upset that once again the refs are deciding a close game.
Never forget: I am a complete idiot
by Exhibit G on May 11, 2009 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
the thing is, Wright was told to make a play at the ball and foul
who knows? maybe he makes a steal or hits the ball off of Melo’s leg out of bounds. Carlisle says he was shouting “get the foul”. The NBA made clear they made a mistake – that alone is clear enough evidence that – they made a mistake.
Unfortunately, it cost the Mavs a game.
Besides, my buddy Mark told me that the Nugs are punks.

aside from a couple plays in the third. I think he’s just really tired from previous years, the Olympics, and this whole season. When he turns into a jumpshooter he’s still effective, but this series he has to deal with Battier AND Ron every single game.

But imagine how many people constantly hate on him, and how emotional player he is (remember when he started crying on the bench after KG tore him a new one?). This is the one time in his career that he had a chance to throw all that talk back in their face.
That being said, he’s still a major douche bag and I hope they trust him to make a game winning shot again just so he misses and cries on the floor like a little bitch.
