On Today’s Tom Thibodeau Interview
"We met for two-and-a-half hours in what I would categorize as an impressive overall interview. We talked at length on his basketball philosophies. Tom was very well prepared and is very engaging. He certainly is someone whose extensive NBA coaching experience, which includes approximately 140 Playoff games, really comes across when you sit down and talk with him. He is definitely a teacher with a pragmatic approach to development."

What I like about this

Is it reminds me of Messina’s philosophy on being a teacher and developing your players.

Kurt and Thib

I’d be happy with at this point. Westphal is a big ball of meh to me. Messina is obviously my dream coach, but it doesn’t seem likely he’ll even get interviewed.

What are the odds

cbssportsline had this tid bit to add to Amick's notes.
Internally, there was a strong feeling in the Sacramento front office that former Kings and Wizards coach Eddie Jordan would emerge as the front runner. According to a source, Jordan called the Kings two days before accepting the Philadelphia job and said he was getting close to an agreement with the Sixers. The Kings informed Jordan that, while they believed he would be a good fit, they needed to interview two other candidates.
Ken Berger cbssportline.com

Now why did they have to go and did up this information to make some of us Eddie Jordan fans that much more frustrated by the Kings, their current coaching search and the current financial situation of the franchise..

Respectfully disagree.

In a professional setting such as this the main decision maker should be present. Now, I don’t know what personal reason called Petrie to the East Coast, but it better be a good one. I don’t think I’d be the only one to interpret Petrie’s absence as a slight to Rambis. Unless, of course, the interview was merely a formality.

It's not like the interview couldn't be postponed.

Even if it was until after the finals. Petrie has said all along that the process will take as long as it’s gonna take. There’s nobody else to even compete against anymore for these candidates. I understand that people use technology nowadays to leverage time, hell I do it on a daily basis but doing so removes a certain personal element that is critical in decisions such as this. It’s a bad precedent. I’m just saying.

Teh Dego Dagger

by BPaoliano on Jun 1, 2009 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions

But they are not making the decision based on one interview

Or at least, I would hope. If they like a candidate I’m guessing they will have a second interview and THAT one could happen after the Finals.

As has been said before, Petrie interviewed Rambis personally before, so those personal elements had been touched on , and maybe Petrie had a good feel of what Rambis could bring to the table as a person. Maybe now they are more interested in what he has learned in the past couple years.

I think you are being a litle harsh, especially on something that sounds a little trivial (ex. communication tools)

I'll admit

that it may be a little bit of an old school opinion, and I understand that Rambis is a known quantity, but I bet Petrie wouldn’t have phoned in his interview with Eddie Jordan. We may just have to agree to disagree on this. Personally I never really saw Rambis as the next Kings head coach, this only enforces that.

Teh Dego Dagger

by BPaoliano on Jun 1, 2009 9:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough

I do see your point though. I just think that personal matters do happen, and if you think about that way, it just shows that the Kings really wanted to interview Rambis and did not want to wait any longer. We’ll see what comes out of this…

Also, it possible that Petrie has already had a meeting off the books w/ Rambis

and this is a meet and greet with the bothers Maloof and co. to earn their blessing. Remember, BP- we are on the outside looking in and Geoff Petrie has to my knowledge been nothing but a professional in all aspects of his job. Missing out on a potential coaching hire tells me three things-

-Rambis is not a viable candidate.
-Petrie already knows all he needs to know about Rambis.
-Low and behold, we as fans on a website don’t have all the information pertinent to the situation.

I've hired and fired hundreds of people-

I would never hire a person who I couldn’t look into their eyes when I asked them a question. Hiring people is about trusting your instincts, gathering all the information you can get and then making a decision that you are totally confident in. There is no way that after the Musselman/Theus debacle that Petrie is going to allow his opinion to be swayed by fancy charts and coaching mumbo jumbo. This is about finding a successful basketball man, with experience that Petrie feels he can trust and work with…at least until his contract is done….

I've also hired and fired my share

and I’ve always dealt with the hiring process with the utmost respect and professionalism. This next hire will have a lot of pressure: to help put butts in seats, teach the youth and lead a charge from the cellar. The future location of the team is at stake. Considering this, I (as hypothetical hirer) am at every relevant interview showing the same respect and professionalism that I expect from the candidate to I chose to help achieve the goals listed above.

The operative word there: relevant.

Rambis is prepping for the finals

I think it was a courtesy, so he only had to take the 2 1/2 hours out of his prep time instead of basically a full day to travel to Vegas, interview and travel back.

Rambis has a window before the finals...

and although the process has already taken longer than it should have, the Kings need a coach asap so he can be part of the draft prep process and so he can direct players for next season. Waiting around, even this long is ridiculous, the only reason to wait this long is if Rambis is an actual viable candidate and this is the first opportunity to take a run at him. After this interview, I expect a quick round of 1 or 2 second interviews- Petrie can meet Rambis in LA for lunch late this week if he is the Maloofs guy. I also think that it is important that the Maloofs have seen two guys in one week for the same position although I don’t think Rambis can possibly be prepared like the other guys were do to his playoff commitments.

Lastly, is Rambis interested in this job or is he already the heir apparent in LA and he’s sitting down with the Maloofs to be respectful.

Hot dogs, get your hot dogs.

by jjham15 on Jun 1, 2009 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I could be wrong,

But I thought Rambis was interviewed for the job previously when they hired Theus or Mussleman. My guess, is that Petrie has a pretty good feel for Rambis.

I’m with you though, I think the interview should have been postponed. Maybe they’re trying to get the decision completed prior to the draft.

I have a feeling that Rambis may not interview that well but may turn out to be a great coach.

by nothingbutnet on Jun 2, 2009 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Remember, though...

…Petrie has interviewed Rambis two times now for the same position, and likely would have no problem if the Maloofs have a ringing endorsement and encourage his hire. His repeated interviews speak to Petrie’s belief in his abilities.

by KevinSalvadori on Jun 1, 2009 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

The repeated interview is a good point

I guess my 2nd question is this: Why isn’t Brian Shaw being interviewed?

Not necessarily.

People are interviewed all the time for reasons other than they are the perfect person for the job. Just interviewing for the position is a resume builder for Rambis. Well theoretically.

But Petrie's only reason for not being their is personal reasons

plus he already has a pretty strong indication of what Rambis brings and is obviously still interested in him since this is his 3rd interview. The only difference this time is that it’s Petrie’s decision, where as the last two had Maloof meddling

There's really no rush here

We’re in a good spot in terms of supply and demand. Nobody else is looking for a coach, so what exactly is the hurry?

Being an optimist, I’d like to believe they aren’t just trying to hire the cheapest guy who wwill take the job. It wasn’t that long ago that Stan Van Gundy was on the hot seat, and maybe the Kings are waiting for someone like that to emerge.

Maybe there is an assistant for the Cavs or Nuggets that will now filter into the mix?

I think this search has at least a couple more weeks to go, if not longer.

Or did I miss a decision to keep McHale on as coach next season? Not that that would mean we should hurry, but it wouldn’t be a bad thing to decide before another option opens up.

Coaches are almost always part of the draft process CC.

It’s another set of eyes. A coach has his own opinions on what he wants going forward. Remember, this is a coach who in all likelihood is locking himself into a 3 year contract, why would he not want or need a say in what the future top 4 pick would be. If I’m a defensive guy, I’m pulling for Thabeet or Evans- if I’m an offensive guy, I want Rubio or DeRozan- now I know its not this simple, a coach needs to have his say in this process.

Agree

And to add, none of the guys we are interviewing are exactly Phil Jackson or Gregg Popovich. I’m not sure losing out on Eddie Jordan is the end of the world, same as Kurt Rambis/Tom Thibodeau, etc.

by otis29 on Jun 2, 2009 6:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Petrie is not present because of personal reasons and Rambis could not reschedule because the Finals start Thursday

and Brian Shaw isn’t considered and they want to make a decision soon, but not with Ettore Messina and Eddie Jordan was too much money and Paul Westphal is reasonabley affordable and Tom Thibodeau is a teacher but not much is being said and I am so goddamn confused because it is Petrie’s decision and the Maloofs are conducting the interview but he is using the Cisco commercial Mr. Gadget CGI stuff to be there because maybe they think they need to make a decision before the draft and Rambis won’t be available for possibly two more weeks….

by betweentheeyes on Jun 1, 2009 9:16 PM PDT reply actions

Jordan...

After further thought, I now believe that Jordan’s courtesy call was probably not so much a courtesy but a confirmation that he couldn’t get more cash out of the situation. Obviously the Kings were not going to break the bank to lock this guy down and a matching contract offer would only have led to a higher offer from Washington and more egg on the face.

The Maloof's going to LA, instead of the candidate going to Vegas shows respect.

Also, Full Court Press has this

Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof and President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie interviewed Kurt Rambis today in Los Angeles for the team’s head coaching position. Geoff participated in the interview via conference call as he is back East attending to a personal family matter. Following are some direct quotes from Petrie on Rambis following the interview.

"Kurt did an excellent job of communicating his thoughts on our head coaching position and our roster over the course of a two-and-a-half hour interview. His experience having been around so many championship teams over the years really shines through when you have a chance to sit down and talk
with him about the necessary elements to win in this league. He has some strong beliefs in what it takes to succeed on both ends of the floor. We really appreciate him taking the time to go through this process with us as he is working so diligently in preparation for the Finals."

Why would Petrie be dragging things on like this, not worried about Jordan getting snapped up by Philly? He knows Rambis isn’t going anywhere until after the playoffs are over.

On a less speculative note, however, Petrie’s listed qualifications are clear. Rambis is the only coach with both championship experience and head coaching experience. He’s played on title teams himself, and did reasonably well as a head coach in LA before PJ came along. Just as important, if not moreso, he’s coached defense now in LA as a lead assistant.

I’m not pro-Rambis or pro-anyone, but I can see Petrie hiring him.

On a Purely Speculative Note

I wonder if GP’s trip back east is to do “personal” background checks on Thib.
