I dont know....

if its the beard or his size, but he reminds me of Baron Davis.
Is he predicted to remain a shooting guard or can he slide over to the point?

I have suffered through Joe Kleine, Pervis Ellison, Greg Kite, Dwayne Schintzius & many others. This team doesn't scare me!

Read this

http://www.sacbee.com/kings/story/1937019.html says he can play 1, 2, and 3 whether or not its true or just an attempt to raise his stock is for Petrie to decide.

Probably the most impressive workout they’ve showed in this youtube series. I wish we could of seen more or of T Evans but Evan’s jumper is not as smooth or balanced as Harden’s. He has poor man’s dwade potential haha

by KingsForLife on Jun 11, 2009 11:46 AM PDT reply actions

Harden makes it look easy.

He has an effortless air about him with the way he moves, dribbles, and shoots. He reminds me a lot of Brandon Roy. If we are able to take him at 4, most drafts says he goes either 2 or 3, I wouldn’t mind at all. He plays the same position as our best player, but he would definitely be the BPA at 4.

There now I've met the 75 word count. -pookeyguru

If you liked Harden's jumper

…check out Stephen Curry’s workout with Minnesota. He makes Harden’s jumper look like Shawn Marion. (Not really, but it’s pretty damn good.)

Thanks for posting this because if Rubio is gone I now officially know who I want! We figure out how the minutes will break down or who gets traded later.

No issues with Harden rockin’ the purple…

by Noble_Bloodlines on Jun 11, 2009 11:57 AM PDT reply actions

Not much elevation in his jump shot and he holds the ball out in front of him while leaning down. Could have problems getting his shot if the defense really wants to contest him. Otherwise, you can see really well developed basketball skills. Also, he didn’t look fat to me.

by bignerd on Jun 11, 2009 11:58 AM PDT reply actions

This is what I was going to say

Not much elevation and lack of size means he’s going to have a hard time getting his shot off.

by nbrans on Jun 11, 2009 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions

my takeaway

The 4 pick is way too high to take Shareef.

Harden looked incredibly smooth, but also slow, and also not much elevation. Like a 40 year old Joe Dumars.

Not much elevation? Silly. The guy just plays the game. You don’t win points for jumping 36" v. 32". May want to check the combine numbers if you are concerned about his athleticism.

Harden is more athletic than Dwyane Wade.

+1

He wasn’t getting lift on his midrange J. Half of those shots he put up would have been easily contested. Or even blocked. And he’s not a quick guy. At all. Remember that prospects get in maybe the best shape of their lives just for these workouts. And he still (!) looked slow and plodding.

At the same time I think his outside shot is excellent. He’ll have a lot more time to get it off on the perimeter, too. And his ability to get off the floor and dunk is better than I thought. Not necessarily good. Just better than I thought.

Ha, I know what you mean.

He looked really good there. Harden can definitely shoot. His release is a little weird and slow, but he’s probably the most polished player in the draft. He’s also probably the least likely to be a bust (after Griffin), and I think any team in the league would be ecstatic to have him.

But…I’d still prefer Jennings – just think he has a higher ceiling. Guess I’m greedy.

by Charlieb on Jun 11, 2009 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions

i’m still all for tyreke. One of the things that people comment on is how much softer hardens shot is. A shot is something that is very easy to fix, and Evan’s handles and size at PG are too much for me to pass on. I have to admit though, standing two handers for a guy that’s 6’5" is pretty impressive.

by boffacheerios on Jun 11, 2009 12:23 PM PDT reply actions

Can't shoot in college?

The guy played ONE year. In a system where he was encouraged to drive the lane and finish rather than operate in the midrange or on the outside. He’s said so numerous times when talking about Calipari’s system.

If guys like Sam Young can learn to shoot by the end of their college careers, Evans can learn in a year or two of NBA ball. I have all confidence in that.

by oldenpolynice on Jun 11, 2009 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Per Draft Express he won't be drafted by the Kings

because he refused to work out with Terence Williams who we had in – and was standing on the sideline there, salivating to go up against him.
Listen to the radio interview posted.

I don’t draft a combo guard who can’t shoot myself. QD could shoot in college and we know what happened there.

These guys,

that don’t work out are a bunch of Primadonnas.

I want to make lots of money, but don’t ask me to prove myself.

The NBA should make it mandatory that players work out at least twice prior to draft day. One of those work-outs should be open so multiple teams can review it.

Its like buying a car without a test drive. You’ve seen it in commercials and on the road but you have never gotten behind the wheel.

by nothingbutnet on Jun 11, 2009 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I understand your point but I don't agree

that is like say I won’t buy that $2500 bottle of Ch. Patrus unless you open it first and let me taste it.

This is the draft – caveat emptor is the rule.

These young men have a body of work and ample oppurtunity to display their wares. Experts who are paid millions of dollars stake their reputation on their decisions as to whom they will pick. If a player choses not to work out – and you have had the oppurutnity to see a sample of the work outs on fan shot video – does the work out make or break the pick? sometimes yes, often no. If Rubio can afford to not work out than so be it. If that makes you not want to draft him and you are a GM, so be it.

working out is not the same as not working

this is a meat market – not a stock market – you are allowed to play coy. Sometimes showing more is too much.

I am a strong advocate of work, and action, but I don’t think we are on the same page on this one. We are comparing apples and oranges, PCs and apple pies.

i don’t see us drafting any position besides point guard with the #4 pick. my pick is evans since he can play both guard spots but can effectively run the point.

by gedrosolan on Jun 11, 2009 12:24 PM PDT reply actions

Harden

Rated really high athletically at the combine. He’s one of those guys that looks like he plays close the floor but will surprise you with bursts at times. I like the Roy comparison. If he can play some 1 he is a no-brainer. For me it’s between Evans and Harden (if Harden’s available). Rubio will probably be gone, but I’m not sold anyways…….Evans reminds me of Gary Payton. For the Kings that would be a good thing.

Tomorrow could be the day of reckoning for who we take.

Tyreke Evans has great size but really is a two, also for all the talk about going up against whoever; Terrence Williams was at the Kings facility the same day that Evans’ worked out, or so says the DX podcast, and god knows Williams would’ve loved to defend Evans and increase his stock.

Flynn has seen his stock increase and if Jennings or Flynn really perform tomorrow either of them could go 4, Petrie doesn’t mind small PG’s as he was high on Aaron Brooks (that would’ve been nice). On the flip side if Holiday locks down the competition he’ll also lock down number 4.

As far as Rubio goes, I think he’ll be there at 4, but I think the Kings will pass on him if he hasn’t worked out for them. The Maloofs definitely don’t want to spend the number 4 pick on someone who won’t play immediately. They are worried about ticket prices and if Levien can’t get it worked out by draft day, he’ll drop past us.

That’s my 2 cents and I am sure Petrie will do something completely different.

I don't really think there is a #1 pick overall that is clearcut

Like there was in 2008 or 2007.

Which is not why I’m thinking higher of Brandon Jennings than Ricky Rubio.

It’s all about cost vs appropriateness, and for the KIngs to acquire Rubio without moving up is too costly and not really worth it overall.

I’d be just as happy if the KIngs settled on Holiday, or Flynn too truthfully.

But right now I’m stumping Jennings. Too many good things overall to look at. And, Jennings, unlike Rubio, is very athletic.

He didn’t go to Treviso for the Reebok Eurocamp because he got tired of being in Italy and he felt without better players there he wouldn’t look good anyway. It was a smart decision.

How well he works out I think will determine his draft stock ultimately.

Music to the Maloof's Ears

I know one thing Mo; if the pick comes down to Joe and Gavin being worried about their wallets, then Rubio is the biggest no-brainer decision in the history of this franchise.

Ricky Rubio may or may not be the best player in this draft after Blake Griffin, but he is hands down the most exciting player in terms of marketing since LeBron James.

The Maloofs look at a flashy, 18 year old kid with a Pete Maravich haircut who speaks Spanish as his first language and who is the most famous player in Europe and they hear one sound: “ka-ching, ka-ching, ka-ching”.

(Hunter Thompson)

by Mucho Moss on Jun 11, 2009 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree about Rubio's marketing and popularity,

but I don’t think the Maloofs would want to stash the pick as they are hurting financially. I forget if Petrie or the Maloofs said it but they alluded to the fact they would not draft someone who didn’t come over and play immediately. They want a reason for prospective season ticket holders to buy now, not next year. That’s why I pointed out if Levien cannot iron out the details by draft day, the Kings will pass on Rubio.

There now I've met the 75 word count. -pookeyguru

by moproblemz on Jun 11, 2009 1:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Rubio's Buy-out

I understand Levien is negotiating a reduction to the buy out, but I’m not familiar with what other potential hang-ups remain.

I assume that neither OKC nor any other team looking to jump up to the second pick would select Ricky unless he is definitely headed to the NBA this coming season. Is that not true (as far as you’ve heard)?

"When the going gets Weird, the Weird turn professional."
(Hunter Thompson)

by Mucho Moss on Jun 11, 2009 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

What I've heard...

Is that he’ll be suspended indefinitely w/o pay from Joventut, not surprising, but if he cannot get the buyout worked out he’ll essentially be in no mans land and forced to sit out next year as he won’t be able to play for anyone, Euroleague or NBA.

Again, the buyout being negotiated should happen at some point, you just wonder if the Kings are willing to take any risks as they are financially strapped. Just look at how they handled the coaching search with the main mitigating factor being money.

Also since the debt has been sold to the Spanish IRS it could make it more complicated to lower and/or change the buyout.

Harden.

He uses his off arm to push defenders away almost every time he drives, and I’m not sure he’ll get away with that in the NBA. After watching him do that consistently last year in college, it was funny to me that he actually did it here in the drills (take a look at the one where he is supposed to go around a defender around mid-court and then another in the post for a layup/dunk).

I like the size of Harden's hands

He can easily palm a ball even though you could only see him doing that (about a min 15 secs in or so), and his athleticism is sneaky somewhat. I do think he made an emphasis on going up in the workout’s to show how athletic he is.

I think Harden will fit in really well in OKC or Memphis.

My thoughts...

I like how balanced he is going both right and left. He also looks like he has pretty good hands.

I dont like how he kicks his left leg out on nearly every jumper. I also worry about his lack of elevation when he shoots his jumper. While he may have unbelievable combine numbers, that doesnt mean he can shoot a jumper while jumping that high. Without being gaurded he barely gets up.

He's really not very good going right.

It’s a fairly large weakness, and if you watch him in the video, he cheats by dribbling with his left hand until he absolutely has to switch to the right hand.

closest thing to Brandon Roy this year

I doubt Harden can play PG consistently but he’s the kind of player that you can have run the point for stretches at a time. He’s a solid passer and knows how to find his players when he drives to the basket. He may not be an all-star player but he’ll definitely be a starter in the NBA. He may not be as good a scorer as Kevin Martin but he has better all round game. For those commenting on his lack of elevation on his jump shot as long as he’s consistent that is what counts. A lot of players are more consistent as shooters when they just barely get off the ground. Bibbly and Peja never got high off the ground. Kapono is the same. Harden is a crafty player…I don’t recall him getting blocked much in college. All that said I think the Thunder pick him up because he’d make a great pairing with Westbrook.

Harden looks like

he’s definitely put some time in at the gym, much more muscle definition then during his college time, although wearing a t-shirt under his jersey probably covered some of that up. Although he definitely has a solid skill set and from the video his jumper looks much nicer then I remember, every time I watched him play I was always underwhelmed. Maybe I just expected too much with all the hype but it never seemed like he could just take over a game whenever he wanted to, something that a top-five draft pick should generally be able to do on a college team (I don’t think Thabeet can either for that matter). Part of that is his style of play (very smoth, controlled, and never seems to be in a rush) and in the NBA he may prove me wrong but I was always much more impressed with Evans.

More impressive than Tyreke in the workout. I wish he had PG skills. He makes more sense for OK and Memphis than Rubio.

maybe we trade the 23 & 31 slots to pcik up a PG and use the 4 for Harden. He would provide defensive toughness at the 2 that Martin can’t provide. Lets get rid of Garcia and use him at the 2 & 3.

I thought the same thing..

..he does remind me quite a bit of Mitch in his motions and frame. Doesn’t seem to have blazing speed or a super quick first step but has a knack for creating space and using angles to get off shots. Mitch was as strong as they come and certainly no slouch as an athlete. It remains to see if Harden’s combine numbers will translate as they seem to indicate the same. As others have mentioned, the mechanics on his jumpshot are quirky. Never seems to full square himself and is always fading away kicking out that foot. Also as pointed out his release point isn’t very high nor quick. It does work for him up to this point but I can see longer 2 guards giving him fits.

These workouts are useless

Seeing a guy go 1 on 0 at 1/4 speed just shooting jump shots is completely useless. I certainly hope the team is working players harder than that behind the scenes. I can dribble the ball around at 2 miles and hour and hit jump shots.

I appreciate that they’re posting something but this doesn’t tell me anything at all about Harden. Even his jump shot – people say he holds it out front and doesn’t get any elevation – think about how you would have viewed Kevin Martin’s ridiculous windup in a 1 on 0 drill. I’m not defending Harden as much as I’m saying that these videos don’t tell us anything at all.

I don’t get this consternation about Harden’s lack of lift and how that’s going to hurt him getting his shot off. He’s going to be able to get his shot; it’s not only the most athletic guys in the nba who can do so. At 6’5 with long arms, he has more than enough raw size and length against other two-guards to release his shot before getting into his ability to use the dribble to create space and his skill with screens.

I think he’s a very safe prospect because he is so skilled and has solid athletic ability. He can shoot, pass and is a very good ball handler. The passing part is the biggest thing for me. When I first saw him, he reminded me of Calbert Cheaney. The athleticism didn’t wow me, the production couldn’t be argued with but I thought the great athletes in the nba would be able to handle him Then I kept seeing what a great passer he was. Cheaney would have had a much better and longer career if he could pass. So would have someone like Ron Mercer. Playmakers already have one leg up in the league so to speak and if they can shoot and get to the line like Harden can, they’re very valuable.
