Brandon Jennings Stirs the Pot

At the post work-out press availability, Brandon Jennings apparently went off on the hype around Ricky Rubio. Sam Amick says The Bee will have video soon. This is a placeholder for said video.

The Paul Westphal introduction press conference will begin at 1:30PM. The Bee and Kings.com will both have streaming coverage.

UPDATE: Video.

UPDATE #2: Ben Golliver from Blazers Edge (@blazersedge) wins with this perfect analogy --

Finally, somebody said it!

Sure, it was cocky, but the Rubio hype train has been out of control for awhile now. Hell, even Petrie described RR as “a You Tube sensation”, as related by one of the readers/posters/stalkers here on STR.

I’m still not sold at all on Jennings, but I do like his candor. Was it calculated? I doubt he’s a calculating type of person. Honest? Brash? Absolutely. That’s not a deal breaker for me.

It's really good around 5:30

Paraphrasing: (about Rubio) “If you had a workout with me, Jonny Flynn, Jrue Holiday, Ty Lawson, Stephen Curry…. he would not come out on top.”

Yeah

I got the sense that he’s been a bit pissed about all the Rubio stuff for a while, and he just got a little carried away and let too much of it spill out. I think we may end up getting a little bit of backtracking from him (his agent?) so that he doesn’t come across as a punk.

by AnotherStupidSN on Jun 12, 2009 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree-

He looked immature, he sounded immature, at one point he was sucking on the top of his jersey like a 5 year old. And then he dropped very immature statements to go with his body language. I see red flags all over this kid, something I did not see out of Johnny Flynn who looked and acted like a professional prospect. All flash- that’s what I saw out of Jennings interview. With his draft stock dropping, I think he came in here trying to get some attention.

I’ve had questions about the guy’s character, but he sounds like an extremely confident cat. I didn’t sense he was purposely trying to badmouth Rubio (although that may have been the end result), but he was speaking honestly.

a red flag is anyone who starts talking trash about other people. Playing with Johnny Flynn is one thing but messing with someone who wasn’t there to defend himself, as a player or fellow interviewee is bush league. This was a professional interview for a mulit-million dollar job, I just get a very poor read on this kids values.

Why would we want a trash-talker

as the face of our franchise. Geoff Petrie is our GM. As Ziller points out, he is the definition of class. Just my opinion, but I think Petrie would agree with JJ here more than the rest of you saying he was just being honest. Perhaps he was showing his immaturity and jealousy. Did you see Flynn joining him in the bashfest? No, Flynn was laughing because what else was he supposed to do there? Sure, he probably agrees and thinks he could also take Rubio, but he’s letting his game speak for him, not his words.

I think it was a poor move that will hurt him in the eyes of many GMs. What is he going to say in interviews when frustrated that the Kings are losing most of the their games next year? He showed a lack of respect and a lack of maturity.

I know a lot of you will not agree with me that this shows he’s immature, but you cannot argue that he showed a lack of respect. He has the physical tools to be a good player, but I don’t think he’s a King… at least while Geoff Petrie is GM.

Talent will cover a lot of that

Kobe Bryant went from a beloved character at 19 years old to a villain due to his offcourt foibles. Michael Jordan had more vices than you could shake a stick at – and was apparently a huge jackass in the locker room. I’d still take either of those guys on my team in a heartbeat.

19 is young but personality usually sticks around. He’s talented and may be a good player but so was Stephon Marbury. I’m looking forward to seeing how these guys do against each other. Holiday just turned 19 and got way more class/maturity/humility than Jennings.

It was 25 minutes or so, right?

That feels close enough to 30 for a game a while back.

Yeah, he was just talking trash, I agree. He’s young and probably sick of this 13 year old kid getting all the hype!

Like others said in reports about the game, the USA Today boxscore is likely wrong, so we can’t really say if he was adding a few assists to make himself better or that is just how he remembered it. I don’t think that point is as important as the fact that it was a game where Rubio was just coming back from injury and still seemed (from reports) to hold his own and then some.

So, wrong game to brag about winning the head to head battle in and all.

I appreciate his candor and that he is willing to work out against other top prospects when his age and potential would make him a lottery pick regardless. I wish Rubio would, since the athleticism and size jump is such a huge one from Eurolandia to Americandia.

If I remember well

Ricky came back ahead of schedule because the lack of depth Joventut had at PG, and he was playing with some stuff on his hand, and couldn’t (and didn’t) shoot the ball.

Maybe it wasn’t that way on that game, but he was playing like that the first games when he came back.

Hype and potential is what Jennings is, Rubio is the only guy in this draft who has proven himself. Of course he has flaws, as every teenager has, but he’s the most sure thing there is in this draft.

I get that your Spanish

But if you were going to make a comparison to Jennings, Tony Parker is a much better comparison. I don’t like comparisons so I won’t make them.

Yes, I'm spanish

In fact, I live 9 metro stops from Joventut’s arena, and I’ve seen Ricky play many times, and I can say he’s one of the best (if not the best) defensive PG’s I’ve seen, and at the same time he’s an amazing distributor, and knows when to go to the basket, and he’s proven himself against the best of the NBA.

Hype is what’s being made after a press conference. I can also get on a mic and say I’m better than any of them and get all cocky, sadly I’m too old to get drafted, I could’ve made some money.

About the comparision, Tony Parker? A best case scenario, I see him more like a TJ Ford, but here in Spain we say opinions are like arses, everybody has his own and nobody wants to smell anyone elses.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

I just don’t like the punk ass bitch attitude- I don’t see competitor, I see big mouth who takes way too much of the coaches time and energy to keep under control…and that’s before he starts dribbling a ball. Reining in an over zealous player like J-Will is hard enough, managing Gary Payton will J-Will’s on court antics is tooooo much for a young team IMO.

Funny how we differ so much on that, considering I’m about as far away as you can get from being a Jennings’ fanboy. But that's a unique opportunity

From a cashier position, you can essentially ask one question. It has to come across as off-the-cuff (which is true, since it’s not like you knew they were goign to come to your lane). And we’re not saying you should stalk them through the store.

But how a guy reacts to a simple question can tell you a ton. If you asked Jennings “Hey, how are you liking Sacramento?”, we could maybe get some insight. You could maybe get a sense of if he’s genuinly wanting to be here, or if he just genuinly wants to be paid like the #4 pick.

Whether he is right or not, we’ll see in time, but I don’t think it was calculated or made for publicity (though if it was, can you blame him? There’s millions of dollars at stake for him depending on where he was drafted, and Sacramento would be a great place for him).

I always liked Jennings' early 90's high top fade

That is an ironic self awareness that tells me something about the kid, but I ain’t sure what. I think it’s a good thing.

I also like that he went to Europe, when he could have gone and starred at an American university. If he had eligibility problems they would have been corrected, like for every top prospect ever (Brandon Roy had them too, and he’s a really smart young man, so I don’t think it necessarily should be a warning sign).

I’m usually big on following the draft, but I haven’t followed it as closely this year. I worry about Rubio because he looks 13, but his body is still growing and filling out so hopefully a man’s body comes out of it. Or, he’s Leonardo DiCaprio and looks 16 years old even when he’s 30+.

I trust Petrie and think he’s a really smart GM and a good, underrated talent evaluator, so I’m sure the Kings will get a very good player at #4. He picks talent every time.

Since I like the Kings I’m gonna be following what you guys do, so thank you for the quick primer to see where the fans are ;-)

I’m just saying that it’s not anathema for Petrie to add players of suspect character, if the payoff in talent is worth it. If anything, I’d hope Petrie worries less about personality issues with a young player like Jennings and more about talent. Because talent will always have value down the road (see J-Will being traded for Mike Bibby).

I agree with everything Jennings said about Rubio, but it was in poor taste to voice his opinion in the way he did.

The guy probably gets asked about Ricky Rubio everywhere he goes, I understand his frustration.

And he makes a sound point: Rubio’s regarded pretty highly for someone who hasn’t shown much in games other than a few “home-run passes”. If you compare them, both have a less than stellar shot, both are great passers, Jennings is much more athletic. Does RR have a higher basketball IQ/awareness? It’s hard to say. There’s not much that tells me that RR is #2 worthy and Jennings is not.

Jennings hasn’t shown much in games either. He hasn’t been given much of an opportunity. But I see where he’s coming from. What has Rubio done that shows he is a better player? Why do most people automatically assume he is the better player.

If you watch the video, the Rubio talk began with topic that Rubio isn’t working out with any teams. Why not? It’s not like he has a great game-time record to do the talking for him. Compare Jennings and Rubio right next to each other in a workout and I think Jennings comes out on top, athleticism being the difference.

He just needs to be a little more tactful with his criticism.

by cbsf on Jun 12, 2009 3:29 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

If you are a potential number 2 in the draft, you probably have more to lose than gain by working out with teams.

Perception is strong and sight weak. In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things.

Yes, I agree. I just don't understand what people are basing their opinion on that makes Rubio a #2 and Jennings lower than that.

If I were a GM, I’m not sure I’d be able to draft a player with Rubio’s “portfolio” without seeing him workout.

And I wonder if not working out will ultimately have the opposite effect and hurt his stock.

I think it's his buyout situation that is concerning most GM's at this point

Not whether he’s working out or not.

by pookeyguru on Jun 12, 2009 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree that his buyout is a big concern for GM's, too.

But first you need to decide if a player is worth drafting talent wise at #2 or #4 or wherever. Then, you can decide if it’s possible to work around his buyout.

I’m not much of a talent evaluator, but I don’t think there’s enough to go on to complete that first step. With Jennings, there is even less to make that judgement, but at least he’s willing to try to prove himself in workouts against other top players.

by cbsf on Jun 12, 2009 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Well said

But we can’t forget the ability of Rubio to put butts in the seats. That might (and should IMO) be a tiebreaker if all other things are somewhat equal.

by otis29 on Jun 12, 2009 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Rubio can do that. But that shouldn’t be the reason to draft someone. That only gets people’s attention in the short term. If the Maloofs want to sell tickets, they need to get the player that will best help them win in the long run.

Plus, Jennings would get people’s attention too.

by cbsf on Jun 12, 2009 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions

That argument was used as a reason for the Blazers to draft Adam Morrison too, though

I think it’s a very short term bump in ticket sales that goes back to even worse than before if it becomes clear the wrong player was chosen.

Not that Rubio is Ammo, of course, but tickets will be sold long term if the team drafts the right dude for the basketball court. Rubio could easily be both, so it’s a moot nitpick I have I guess!

I agree with both you and cbsf

That’s why I added the caveat about all other things being equal. I wouldn’t want that to be the deciding factor if Petrie sees Jennings/Evans/Harden as clearly better players.

by otis29 on Jun 12, 2009 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed.

If talent is considered equal, go with Rubio. You know for sure he won’t have personality issues. And he’ll fill seats. It’s too bad Rubio isn’t going to work out, though. It makes it very hard to make that decision.

Especially in a town like Sacramento/Portland

We both just want a team we like and a team that plays hard and we can see improvements in.

I would think Sacramento is dying to love the Kings again and just needs a gentle prodding in the right direction, either with a high potential fun rookie, K-Mart being healthy, or just the general improvement from the young core you’re going to see this year.

“Worst record in the league” will always suffer for ticket sales, but as long as people see the team is changing and improving and it was only a temporary hiccup (like I think it is), the fans will return.

You guys LOVE your Kings, after all!

Normally I would agree

You just have to wonder if this team has enough time to achieve respectability on the court to increase ticket sales. If Rubio excites the fanbase (even artificially), maybe the idea of moving is put off.

In a perfect world, you would have both. Rubio would be a world class player, and he’d excite the fan base. Or a guy like Jennings or Evans turns into a superstar quickly, and your team improves dramatically.

This offseason has been incredibly interesting. There are so many factors involved here, I can’t imagine this is going to be an easy decision for Petrie & Co.

Pretty serious

This team has to have a new arena. We’ve got our hopes pinned on a NBA sponsored, non-publicly financed plan to build said arena at Cal Expo. Recently, there have been some questions about whether that land will even be available to build on – or if Governor HGH is going to sell it to help pay off the budget deficit. There are obviously lots of little details I’m leaving out, but I believe that is the gist of it.

Outside of that, I don’t think there is a plan out there that is even remotely viable – there is virtually no chance of an arena being built that includes even a small amount of public funding.

The clock is ticking, but right now things are NOT looking good.

Jennings came off a more on the “I’m a little twirp, Gary Payton style”.

I honestly don’t think Jenning’s thing was a big deal, though.

by cbsf on Jun 12, 2009 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I liked it

I think Jennings’ comments were in the competitive spirit and I like that. I think we need a player that has confidence in his ability, he wouldn’t have said those things if he really didn’t think he was better than Rubio. And like pookey said, these two guys know each other, they even did a photoshoot together for SLAM magazine, Rubio might even expect something like this from Jennings. Hopefully when it gets back to Rubio, it’ll make him want to disprove Jennings and I’d love to see the matchup.
But overall it seems like straight competitive talk, it wasn’t unprofessional, athletes run their mouths about each other all the time, they are some of the most competitive people in the world.

Jennings is backing up his comments on Twitter:

“@BJennings3 Rubio is all hype?? Maybe, the Olympics got him exposed but you know his talent is limitless.. He has potential, just like you!”

Oh well. Too bad too. He was a career Marine WHO LOVED Japan. Americans do real well over there if they can immerse themselves in the culture. (I knew a lot of people who lived in Japan from when I was in the Navy.)

Look, this happened last time I came around— you got all pissy for no God damn reason.

Nothing to do with being an English teacher

and nothing to do with “to” or “too” and nothing to do with Mortimer. I saw a comment that didn’t seem to fit with the argument and pointed it out. Nothing more, nothing less.

I thought you were saying

that in “a casual, texty environment” everyone just types “to” because it is easier.

So I was pointing out that he didn’t use “to” as a shorter, easier way to type too or two. He did the opposite, which to me says that he wasn’t being casual and texty.

Now if you meant that everyone uses too all the time, or everyone swaps to and too all the time on twitter, then I misunderstood you.

As for feeling attacked. What ever. There was nothing “pissy” about my response to what you wrote. It appeared to me that you responded without reading what he wrote, and I pointed it out.

Look up earlier in the tread. I did a similar thing when someone said Oakland was to the north. I disagreed, I pointed it out.

I think you can't help but come across as pissy

But that’s fine, it’s just your style and why this probably seems to happen with you (someone going “what’s your deal?”). I didn’t even mention a to vs too thing, just that everyone always mixes it up or gets it wrong on Twitter (in regards to a comment jokingly besmirching his education/intelligence). My comment was the one saying that even my fancy book learnin’ Harvard friends get that wrong, in case you combined my comment with another.

I’ve read ya before, I’ve seen ya here; this is what you do. You nitpick silly stuff. That’s your schtick, and it’s lame, but that’s cool. It’s what ya do.

It’s not that you ‘point something out’, which is always fine. It’s how ya do it. And you know you do it. I hardly come here and it’s something you do every time I’ve been here (not just to me, of course).

I barely hardly don’t even know ya and wouldn’t presume to ask you to change, just explaining where I am coming from. You seem to be on auto-snippy when you reply to mundane matters.

Well, if God damn was bad, I apologize

I know that bugs some people and I shouldn’t say it.

And since you’re a stickler, I didn’t call ya a name, I said you were ACTING pissy/snippy.

And the thing is, you likely do agree with my points (Jennings picked the wrong game to point to as a negative for Rubio, and that people mix up easy stuff in written English, especially in online media, but it isn’t necessarily indicative of that person’s actual intelligence).

I remember you having a minor hissy fit over some of us talking about a Blazers vs Kings game in a Blazers vs Kings thread here on Sactown Royalty because we weren’t Kings fans from a while back, and I’ve noticed that sort of weirdly possessive behavior about the site to other non-Kings-first fans from you. I really don’t want to fight, it’s just your general odd attitude is just… offputting.

It’s not a big deal, I’m just pointing it out. I don’t think I said anything too harsh, and there is no debate to win or anything like that— which makes it all the sillier, with me being party to the silliness. I just wanted to explain myself more.

I wish the Kings much luck and I hope Rubio falls to ya.

Jennings is what we need...

Our team lacks fire and that is exactly what I saw from Jennings in his interview. A lot of people act like basketball players don’t talk trash on and off the floor but it happens all the time. Ever sat close to floor and couldn’t believe what you were hearing??? That fact that Jennings stated his honest opinion confirms my belief he could run our team and be a true leader. BJ reminds me of all the good qualities I loved and miss in Artest. I am also willing to guarntee this guy would not back down to Rubio if they we’re being interviewed right next to each other.

by Doors Open on Jun 12, 2009 4:11 PM PDT reply actions

I like fire but not stupidity.

I understand your point but he should learn “church mouth” (that’s what she said!) or pay for a really good talking head. There is a big difference between game time and interview leading to the draft time.

Agreed!

Like many others have posted before – how mature were any of us at the age of 19?
Jennings spoke his mind and I don’t think he wasn’t too disrespectful to Rubio at all. He’s only one of the few lottery prospects who played against Rubio so he has the right to criticize him.

I’ve seen both play (olympics, McDonalds All American Game, NBA euro-basket etc) and I was more impressed with Jennings in the open floor. I don’t see how anybody can hope for Rubio based on youtube highlight videos. It just doesn’t make any sense. I didn’t see any sort of reliable jumper from Rubio in the Olympics. I won’t even mention the disparity of play between the NBA and the Euro leagues. But if Rubio comes to Sac – I really do hope I’m wrong.

As Doors Open said, the Kings lack fire. I recall C-Webb, B-Jax and Vlade having plenty of it during the hey day.

by WaymanChilcutt on Jun 12, 2009 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Now if Rubio is gone

I definitely do not want Jennings. Rubio played great in the Olympics vs Chris Paul and Deron Williams. Rubio is far more than hype he is great. Jennings is not in the same league and this petty garbage means I do not want him anywhere near the Kings.

I agree with JJ on this

and actually feel bad cause he’s been fighting by himself for a bit. As someone who has played competitive sports in the past (nothing too serious of course) saying you are better than someone else is pretty disrespectful. Growing up, I always thought that saying you were good was ok, but comparing yourself to others and saying you are better is not the way to get respect. He could very well be better than Rubio, but he will have years and years to prove that. Talking now, only makes him look like a punk.

I guess I can understand Jennings frustration and I know it’s immaturity talking, but still. Would Rubio say the same thing about Jennings?? I truly don’t know, but from what I’ve read about him, I doubt he would. It’s a respect time of thing, and though it shouldn’t be that big of a deal, it still IS to some people (count me as one of them).

I’m still hoping for Ricky Rubio, and if not, my next guy is Evans. Jennings was and still is my third guy, but I can honestly say that I will not be as happy to get him as I was before I listened to his comments. Of course, it won’t matter what I think so Petrie will do his thing.

I am guessing there is a very good reason for that

I would speculate that the agents of some of the guys involved in the workout didn’t want public footage of it released. They are already taking a bit of a risk by letting their guys workout competitively against other very good players, if one of them has a bad workout they probably don’t want to let that idea spread to other teams.

Maybe. I don't think it helped though.

And that’s coming from someone who doesn’t think it was a big deal.

by nbrans on Jun 12, 2009 9:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Here's my opinion

Did you read the Chad Ford piece? If you haven’t, here you go.

Anybody whose dealt with him on a limited basis is more likely to be bothered by this. Anybody who knows less about him will be really bothered by it period. It is bothersome in a way, but in another way, I respect him for speaking his mind. That’s one thing about athletes who are too afraid to speak the truth because the paycheck in part depends on them staying away from what the truth is.

But as far as his draft stock? I don’t think every team is in love with him, and think that his talent is overrated. One common myth that I think is funny is the idea that scouts couldn’t scout him in HS. Which is crap. Especially when it’s Jonathan Givony saying that, and then he posts something by a scout who see’s Jennings pull out to run a play in Italy, and saying he would never done that at Dominguez or Oak Hill.

The thing is here, that Jennings just added more fire to the most volatile draft stock of any player. He is not a safe pick. He is very risky in part because of his personality and in part because it’s not exactly perfect to judge how you’ll be able to see how his game works out between his AAU & Italian days. It’s just so hard to guess, and how your gut, and I suppose how you handle him will be important. For instance, all the tweeting he does will not happen during a game. If he’s found doing it, he will likely be suspended.

Here’s the deal though. Do I think the Kings will take him? I don’t know. It depends. On a lot of things. If Rubio is off the board then I say the chance goes up. If Rubio is on the board at 4, than the chances goes down obviously.

But, Jennings has done something that Rubio hasn’t: Worked out for them. However, Rubio has played in 5 on 5 action in front of Petrie which Jennings hasn’t done. So, in some ways, this whole deal is a wash at this point.

I’m by no means the most knowledgable person out there, but I do believe that Brandon Jennings has a great chance to be the best players. All his flaws are fixable, he has things you can’t teach with his athleticism and quickness, he has mental toughness and willingness to work on his game, and he’s also outspoken. Isn’t Spencer Hawes?

I chalk this up to being a guy who thinks he should, and can, be the best player in the game. Brashness will always come with that package whether it’s appreciated or not.

Interesting take

I still don’t think reminding everyone that you’re a loose cannon helps. But I agree that no one is going to be drafting Jennings for his maturity anyway.

by nbrans on Jun 12, 2009 9:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think he imploded his draft stock

He will still go anywhere between 4 (you) and 14 (Suns). In between those spots 4-5 teams will draft a point guard. With easily 10 going before #20. The Warriors reportedly liked Flynn and Jennings a lot, and will likely pick whoever is left.

And as Jennings has stated himself, the second contract in the NBA is where the real money is at.

by Norsktroll on Jun 12, 2009 9:01 PM PDT up reply actions

He was laughing at Jennings

He could just tell that he was putting everybody on some. Some of what he meant was very true, but again, I don’t think his statement was directly at Rubio exactly. It was more directed at the total process and how the media treats every player differently.

That’s all my personal opinion.

The agents have screwed up the process pretty well

Chicago was a massive failure according to some scouts and GMs, one of which vented very publicly about his displeasure with the process (Morey of the Rockets, sending sarcastic tweets from the Reebok Eurocamp how innovative it was to have players actually play 5 on 5 against each other). Now agents don’t let their clients work out for some teams (e.g. the Blazers have that problem). Or not against some players. Or not at all. It’s a mess, and I expect the teams will demand some rule changes/clarifications in the future.

A point made during the Westphal press conference...

The Coach and the Mayor talked about how they rebuilt the Suns team with character guys after the big drug scandal. So I have a hard time imagining Petrie (or Westphal) being that keen on Jennings because the guy seems like a bit of a loose cannon. Not that that is necessarily a deal-breaker, but I would be surprised if they picked the guy.

From the people who brought you Reggie Musselnatt.

by My Losing Season on Jun 12, 2009 9:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Good point,

except that (a) the Kings aren’t trying to rebuild after a scandal and (b) my perception is that Westphal will have no more input into the drafting of the player(s) than any of the previous coaches, which is to say that he will have very little input. This is Petrie’s call. The same Petrie that drafted Jason Williams the last time the team sucked. I’m not saying that’s why he will draft Jennings. I’m just saying today’s press conference will have nothing to do with Petrie not drafting Jennings.

What 214 said

I think Westphal’s impression will matter in how Petrie forms part of his opinion though. He didn’t bring Westphal just to coach these guys. He wanted a savvy, tough, smart basketball opinion maker as well. Westphal gives the KIngs that. This might go down as the best move the Kings franchise has made of all time given the circumstances.

MLS

I don’t think Westphal talked about character of the new guys. He didn’t say Larry Nance had drug problems either. I think he was, more or less, talking about Walter Davis who very much did.

But, at the same time, I do think his point about that trade was that Nance, in 1988 when that trade was made, happened to be 28 years old. I think the analogy was about how trading Artest may be the thing that reboots this franchise in terms of talent, and not just Donte, but this 23rd overall pick.

Again, I don’t think the drug scandal was really what he was referring to with that trade. Maybe 214 can fill in the Nance issue, but I’ve never heard of him being addicted to Coke like other players.

My recollection

is that Nance had nothing to do with the drug scandal. He was simply dealt because the Suns wanted to get their hands on Kevin Johnson. Nance went on to be a solid contributor for the Cavs and ended his career with a good reputation. If memory serves, he went on to drive NHRA funny cars.

I wasn't implicating Nance

But rebuilding the Suns team with youth and character was a message I took from today’s press conference. I don’t have the exact quote. Anyway, my sense of Petrie is that he will not be impressed with Jennings’ demeanor today.

This falls under the "slow news day" category

The draft is almost here, and everyone has already talked about everything there is to talk about ad nauseum, so the most interesting thing left to talk about is one basketball player saying he thinks he’s better than another basketball player. I can’t imagine that would be a story during any other time of the year. I can’t wait for the draft, I’m sick of all this crap.

My thoughts on article and comments

The statements made me laugh. They were also proved untrue and thanks to a link above we’re all able to look at that (here it is again in so you don’t have to dig http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame?gamenumber=7&gamecode=80&phasetypecode=rs)

The fact Rubio had an injury is of note too.

In regards to brash, there’s the big dog’s slow rumbling growl telling people to get the heck away or you’ll be sorry, and there’s the little dog barking because if the noise doesn’t scare you off, you’ll notice how small he is and realize you can fit his head in your mouth and bite it off. If he has to exaggerate his assists and belittle his opponent, I suspect he’s a little dog. I don’t know for sure.

The point that he’s doing this to increase value is probably valid. Bad press is still press and people will still know who you are. He’s marketing himself and he’s now out there because… that’s funny stuff he said (even if it’s not true, news is still mostly about headlines and soundbites, not facts).

In regards to character. As a Blazer fan I still lean towards character. i think a team can probably take one problem guy and use him if their foundation is secure. For rebuilding a team, I wouldn’t touch a problem child with a ten foot pole. The bulls took on Rodman, but does anyone think that he could disrupt that team or that Jordan would let that happen? However, you put him on other teams that don’t have a sound base and you have issues that effect the team.

I see the kings as a rebuilding team. As such, I’d find good solid people to build this team around and make sure they have their heads on tight. Eventually, when a run is starting to take place and the foundation is solid, then I look at an upgrade and maybe I take a chance on a head case if he’s the last piece to carry me over the hump.

In regards to the guy being dumb because he don’t speak no good english or he rites bads…

People are a product of their environment. That however has no reflection on his intellect and neither does his inability to spell correctly on twitter and neither does his failing to pass the SAT. Some people just don’t have brains that fit within the current main stream education system. You take them out of that box or THEY take themselves out of that box and they excel amazingly. Poor grammar or failing the SAT may be symptoms of an issue, but they are not the be all end all of “see, this guy is an idiot.”

I’ve typed your and you’re and reversed the two because my fingers typed what they wanted. It doesn’t mean that I’m lacking in teh mental capacity area. It may mean i’m too lazy to go back and edit before posting, but not that I’m an idiot.

If I’m rebuilding, I think I’d pass on this kid. I’d find other talent. I’d look for that quiet confidence where they’ll let their actions speak for themselves instead of brash words. I’d look for a leader. I’d look for a hard worker. I’d look for a strong desire to compete and to win. I’d look for the guy that never quits. And… i’d look for talent and potential.

Talent and potential alone doesn’t get you to the promised land. You need someone who can rise up and utilize every inch of talent they have and meet and exceed their potential, and who doesn’t quit because the thought of losing is painful, but when they do lose, they figure out how to not let it happen again.

Those are my thoughts. Loud stands out, but i prefer quiet action. This kid is loud, and the stats and facts don’t back up his bark. I care about that more than the SAT.
