Jennings at #4?
I've heard an awful lot about Brandon Jennings calling out Rubio (which is all fine and good), but there hasn't been much comment on the fact that Amick is reporting that he outplayed Flynn who was guarding him (and who is more athletic and quick than Rubio).
Amick's blog this morning was eye opening. It sounds like Jennings can get anywhere he wants on the floor, and his jumper (at least yesterday) was better than advertised. We had 300 comments on whether or not was professional to call out Rubio (it wasn't), but very little on the impact of the workout.
Jennings came off as cocky or confident afterwards, but it sound like he had a right to be. If he did clearly outplay the other two, I don't care if he is cocky, I want him on our squad. We need a little swagger and athleticism, and it sounds like Brandon Jennings has both in spades.

Indeed
We’ve gotten so caught up in Jennings brashness, we still haven’t discussed (or seen) the workout.
BTW, here is a link to Sam Amick’s blogpost. There’s some great information, including a blow-by-blow of a portion of the workout.

Hind sight is 20-20- but its a pretty nice recovery.
I also agree with Pook- there is no such thing as bad publicity (unless your a wide receiver from Sacramento playing in the NFL).

If Rubio isn't there
I see no reason not to take Jennings
Amick’s article makes it seem like Jennings is a fairly decent defender. He was able to stay in front of Flynn, whose quick as hell. He might not be a great defender but it doesn’t seem like he’s all that bad

Jennings should outplay Flynn, he is projected as a higher pick. I dont hink Flynn is in play for them at #4, but he is a good bench mark to see where Jennings and Holiday stand as being fits with the Kings.
by LASportsCentral.com on Jun 13, 2009 11:28 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I do have to agree. Flynn is probably overrated at this point. He’s the guy in 2009 that has shot up the draft boards due to supply and demand. Given the projections over the last year Jennings ought to be the hands down better player.
Also, lets not give Jennings too much credit. Yesterday was his entire pre-draft workout. He’s not jumping from one workout to the next, his entire concentration has been on this workout. I’m sure he was motivated out his mind and doesn’t have to worry about competing again until summer camp. It’s one performance, lets not forget he spent an entire year playing in Europe where his performances considerably dropped his draft stock.

You have no clue what you speak of with regards to Jennings draft stock and Europe
It’s volatile because people, like yourself, don’t understand it.
So let me repeat something that maybe you can pound into your head with a spoon: EUROPE REPRESSES STATS. Most European players, some American, are grown men who have already gone, and beyond, where Jennings is at. Jonny Flynn did not have that opportunity. He would not have done as well. Neither would Lawson, Collison or any other American PG. You’re vastly ignoring how TOUGH IT IS to play in Europe.

You think scouts just look at stats in the paper? Starting in preliminary draft reports in 2008 Jennings went from being the 1st pick to around 7th pick when finally eligible in 2009. He played his way down to that level on his Euro tour.
No, I hadn’t heard he was in bay area earlier. Beating Flynn twice is only slightly more impressive than beating him once. Is Flynn even a lottery talent?

I do not want to get into a full blown argument as to why we shouldn’t pick Jennings. That’s not my aim. I don’t think one workout should convince anyone that he is the guy. By all accounts from interviews from team management, Jennings needed a good showing just to be considered.

B-nerd
I listened to everything you said . At this point i’d be ok , if you just came out and said i dont like Jennings as a person , because if your questioning his talent then , with all due respect i think your wrong
Listen B-nerd , a very strong case could be made that Jennings is the most talented player in this years draft . What else does Jennings have to do to prove he could be worthy of a #4 pick . I mean we all knew that it would come down to his workouts , and from what i understand he had a good workout at Golden State and Sacramento . Whether it’s Petrie’s pick or not , the dude has mad skills and talent
I think that no matter how well Jennings does , thiers always going to be guys like you that just keep looking for the negative . Whether Jennings personality atrracts the negativity or not , me ,i don’t give a shit , because if he can produce , thats all that matters

The answer probably depends on what type of PG you’re looking for.
First assuming Rubio drops – with the Grizzlies owner Heisley infatuated with Thabeet & Rubio’s preference not to play for them while OKC probably will go Harden if Thabeet isn’t there – do you take Jennings over Rubio?
Rubio is probably the craftiest of the bunch, the most pass first & the likely the most team play orientated. But he could very well be Nash without a jump shot – if guys don’t have to respect the jumper, how effective would he be offensively? he looks like he’s good as off the ball defender who plays the passing lanes, but how big of an on the ball defensive liability will he be?
Jennings is probably the quickest of the group and could be a Tony Parker or Devin Harris type. At worst he would be what guys like Mike Conley & Aaron Brooks bring – though his steals #‘s seem to indicate he’s a much peskier defender. Like Rubio, he’s another push the pace type guy. is that the type of player that would work best with guys like Martin, Thompson & Hawes?
Curry is far and away the best shooter of the group and would provide floor spacing on offense. He probably falls in the Bibby, Mo Williams range in terms of ceiling. In the worst case he fills the shooter off the bench role.
Holiday has the best size at 6’4.25" w/ shoes & 199 lbs and versatility to play on the wing, but he played the worst among the college guys & based on his combine #’s is probably in contention with Rubio for being the least athletic of the group. Similar to a Chris Duhon type. though potentially might be a Kirk Heinrich type. As evidenced by his time at UCLA, he is not a good player off the ball. But he has the best size to pair with Martin & judging only by scouting reports, he might be the best on defense.
Flynn is probably the toughest & most athletic guy – (at best) kind of like a miniature version of Baron Davis. More likely he’ll be somewhere around Raymond Felton or a Kyle Lowry or a little slower, less explosive, but taller version of Nate Robinson. not a real option at the 4 spot, probably more of a 8-14 pick.
unless Jennings is looking like a world beater defensively in the workouts, i’d definitely look into the Rondo deal if he’s really available.

If Holiday’s ceiling is Hinrich and Jennings’ is Parker, I’m taking Parker every time.

If I’m picking (which of course I’m not :( ) I’d take Jennings over Rubio, and possibly Evans over Rubio. The more I see/hear, the less I’m sold on Rubio.
Of course, the argument that leaves me scratching my head the most is that Rubio would somehow fill seats in Arco. I just don’t see how that would happen…

That being said, selling more tickets should only be a tiebreaker in case Petrie sees Rubio as an equal to other prospects
by eduardo_m7 on Jun 14, 2009 1:53 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No it shouldn't
Because you don’t want that kind of tie-breaker to be the reason you pick a player. Many teams have regretted taking that player for such a reason. Or, they should have.

If things are equal
Why wouldn’t that be a tiebreaker? This is a business, after all. And ticket sales are hugely important to a team like the Kings right now.
My guess is though, that the discussion is not relevant. I think Petrie will see a pretty clear victor in this competition for the #4.

Hispanic is used to refer to modern Spain, to the Spanish language, and to the Spanish-speaking nations of the Americas. Look it up amigo...
Politically correct you are. Technically correct you are not…
“Hispanic (Spanish: hispano, hispánico) is a term that historically denoted a relationship to the ancient Hispania (geographically coinciding with the Iberian Peninsula). During the modern era, it took on a more limited meaning, relating to the contemporary nation of Spain.
Still more recently, the term is used to describe the culture and people of countries formerly ruled by Spain, usually with a majority of the population having Spanish ancestry and speaking the Spanish language. These include Mexico, the majority of the Central and South American countries, and most of the Greater Antilles. There are also Spanish influences in the African nation of Equatorial Guinea,1 and the cultures of the Spanish East Indies’ nations and territories, the Philippines, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.2
Hispania was the name given by the Romans to the whole of the Iberian Peninsula (modern Portugal, Spain, Andorra, Gibraltar and a very small southern part of France)."
This is straight from Wikipedia so…don’t hate the messenger…

Webster’s -
1: of or relating to the people, speech, or culture of Spain or of Spain and Portugal
2: of, relating to, or being a person of Latin American descent living in the United States ; especially : one of Cuban, Mexican, or Puerto Rican origin

Technically I guess you are right, although in most common usage I have not heard it used in that manner. Also, you really shouldn’t use Wikipedia as a source. I could just go change it ;-)

But every big player comes to the US when their career is almost over and they do it only to make tons of money. I wish American soccer fans would understand that and stop bringing this washed up players. It’s not really helping the quality of the game and preventing young players from developing.

I'm Pooking shamelessly here but...
another thing I was just thinking about as far as Rubio/Beckham parallels go. I wonder how big of a soccer fan Rubio is and if he plays at all. Look at Steve Nash. He spends the offseason playing soccer as much as possible, and has been quoted as saying its his favorite sport. I know much has been said about Rubio’s lack of quickness (although he certainly does have plenty of speed) but I wonder if he might have a bit of a soccer player-type mentality as far as his stamina/conditioning goes like Nash does. Part of Nash’s skill in ballhandling comes from his crazy footwork, which definitely comes from playing soccer. And even though he’s skinny and not very athletic the dude just keeps going and going. Soccer’s the most exhausting activity on the planet… next to mass genocide

has that star quality. IMO you need that certain ego to be a star player. Ex. Joe Johnson is a great player, but he will never be able to lead a team or be a superstar just because he is to quiet. If he had the star ego he would be probably a top 5 SG in this league.
